Mayumi Takahashi (真弓 高橋 Takahashi Mayumi) is a Sea Hunter and main character in the Hunter X Hunter

Mayumi is a young, attractive girl with a small nose and soft, light blue (Red in the 1999 adaption) eyes. She has blonde hair, with a spiky fringe covering her eyes slightly and two, small but spiky ponytails. She always wears military themed clothing.

At first glance, Mayumi is a kind, polite and helpful female, willing to help anyone. She's a hot-headed person, and often loses control of herself in anger. She's reckless at times, but confident enough to be a Hunter. She's generally unphased by gore and death.

As a natural Tomboy, Mayumi is athletic, and loves to climb, play sports and everything. She's energetic on the most level, but can get sad upon any mention of Matthew, who she believes is dead now, even if he is alive.

Backstory

As a young child, Mayumi's parents were bodyguards for a fairly famous Mafia member. Upon their deaths, when she was 17, she ended up replacing them in the position. Eventually, she met the Shadow Beasts after a group proved to be fatal to thousands of Mafia members. But soon after that event, their boss got sick, and despite doctor's best efforts they died.

Half-depressed at the failure, Mayumi walked around cities, not spending her spare money on anything, causing her to start to lose weight. And then she met Matthew, who was being attacked by some street thugs, helping out the male, the two became quick friends, and Matthew told the female all about Hunters. And they agreed to take the Hunter Exam next year, together.

While they were waiting for the Hunter Exam arc, the two stayed together. Matthew brightened Mayumi up, and she started eating again. The two hung out, and became extremely close friends over the course of the 1 year.

Plot

That year soon came, and both Matthew and Mayumi went on a boat to Zaban City, and overhearing what Gon and The Captain said, she and Matthew journeyed to the mountain, following Matthew, where she got to meet Gon, Kurapika and Leorio. She made quick friends with them, deciding to attempt the puzzle with them, so she could have fun with Matthew's traps that he would lay. That's when she heard him scream, and she realised that her best friend was most likely dead. She half-collapsed on the floor, until the Ten seconds were over. To keep Matthew's legacy going, she carried on with the Hunter Exam. Finishing the first phase and barely breaking a sweat, the female had fun cooking a pig she thought Menchi would like. And it was thrown away like trash, and Buhara ate it. Dejected and angry, she sat down, until Netero came down, and everyone got to retake the exam!

They arrived at Cuckoo Mountain, and Mayumi jumped off literally the second after it was explained what to do, so she passed the exam with flying colours. The third phase came, and Mayumi was grouped up with Sommy to go and finish the challenge. It was something that was simple. But they both managed to succeed, coming 9th and 10th, both in the top ten.

The fourth phase, she ended up teaming with Bodoro, to go and try and fight her target, Ryu, and after a short fight, she got his badge, then she helped Bodoro track down his target, before the two parted ways, and Mayumi met back up with Gon, Leorio and Kurapika. She was glad to see them alright.

In the final stage, Mayumi was up against Kurapika, just before Hisoka and barely managed to win. But she was shocked and horrified to see Killua kill Bodoro, and then get removed from the Exam.

Now a Hunter, Mayumi accompanied Gon and the others on a trip to Zoldyck manner, and like everyone else, was unable to open it. But after a while of training, Mayumi was finally able to open half of a door or her own. And with the others, she was able to lift two doors. Satisfied with her achievement, she continued through the Manor, and could only watch as Canary beat Gon up, before crying. Though, she ran over like everyone else did, to check if she was okay. Then, they all went towards the butler room, and played an intense game of guessing the hand. She was out in the third turn, but was impressed by Gon's talent. Then Killua returned to them.

Now that everyone was together, everyone discussed plans and separated. Wanting to go to Havens Arena, she met up with Gon and Killua, beating people easily until the 200th floor. She couldn't even enter the hallway because of Hisoka's ren. And along with Killua and Gon, she learnt Nen, and found out she was a Manipulator. Unlike Gon, she waited until she had mastered three of the basic nen principles until she fought Sadaso, after being bribed with Zushi's capture. Upon realising what they did, she snapped, and ended up almost killing Sadaso. And she still had fights with both Gido and Riehlvelt left, and she fought them, beating them in less of a brutal manner. She left Havens Arena, along with Gon and Killua after the battles, to go and join Kurapika and Leorio.

However, after realising Kurapika and Leorio had jobs, she instantly went out and became a Sea Hunter, but for now stayed around her friends. Along with Killua and Gon, she stalked the Phantom Troupe and was dragged off as a hostage for Kurapika. When they were freed by Pakunoda, they apologised to their friends and said that they would be leaving for their own job.

So, up through the entire Greed Island arc, she spent her time looking through the sea for lost treasures and Beasts and improving her nen.

In the Chimera Ant Arc, she returned, having mastered nen and making her own Hatsu, she met up with Gon and Killua, and ended up having quite a good time, killing the Chimera Ants as a challenge, to see what she could do. And then Kite was revealed to be dead by Pitou, and adult Gon happened. She was horrified at what happened to her friend, and then Netero ended up Killing himself Mereum, Komugi and tons of other Chimera Ants.

Mayumi tried getting nen doctors, priests and exorcists to help Gon but they were always too terrified of his condition, and then Killua came back, with Alluka in his arms. Alluka, or Nanika, ended up healing Gon, and she was overjoyed. Hearing that he was meeting his father, she was curious but chose not to speak about it, as the 13th chairman had been selected, Pariston Hill, and then he quit and Cheadle Yorkshire became the Chairman. She expressed explicit confusion.

Equipment

Scythe- Mayumi wields a scythe and appears quite skilled in it.

Gun- In the Hunter Exam, Mayumi also wieled a gun, it is unknown what happened to it.

Abilities & Powers

Mayumi has all of the benefits that come with being a Hunter. At the beginning of the series, she proved incredibly inept and using a gun, even being able to shoot Ryu from miles away. During the Hunter Exam, Mayumi was often complimented on her quick-thinking and logic, as well as her durability and stamina.

Enhanced Stamina: Mayumi was easily able to complete a long-distance run just behind the group, which took place on uneven surfaces such as stairs and swampland. In her match with Riehlvelt, she proved capable of keeping him from using aura burst by running in front of his wheelchair multiple times. She kept this act up for two hours, until Riehlvelt attempted to use Aura Burst, where she overturned his wheelchair. She recovers from Exhaustion quickly, similar to Gon.

Enhanced Endurance: Mayumi has been shown fighting even when she is half-dead. This is mostly due to her lack of fear of death, and her willingness to die and meet Matthew again. She did not surrender to Wasp, even when she had a poison that would kill her if she moved to much in her system. She could withstand her legs being burnt and broken in her fight with Riehlvelt and still stand and walk normally after being bumped into by his wheelchair using Aura Burst and later having her legs cut open and managed to still beat him. It wasn't until after the fight until her legs were revealed to be broken.

Nen

Mayumi is a manipulator, and thus is capable of manipulating her nen into people and objects to control them. Thank's to Murel's training, she has the ability to slightly using the Transmutation and Enhancer Class, which she later honed to create nen abilities out of them. She shows greater skill in the Transmutation Class. She has mastered all of the four basic techniques as well as at least 5 of the more advanced ones.

Her main nen ability is Nen Beast, which allows her to summon a humanoid fox which she can manipulate to her will. Using her other nen abilities, she can summon fire around it to make it more dangerous and enhance her stealth to make it seem like there is only one enemy

Trivia

. Mayumi has stated at one point that she loved Matthew, and as more of a friend.
. After beating the Heavens Arenas fighters, she stated that she now has their numbers. It is unknown how she got their numbers.
. Mayumi stated that she finds the Shadow Beasts awesome, but she doubts they can beat Uvogin
