Ethan absolutely cannot stand the risk of children being hurt. If it were one child versus all of the people at Abbott it most likely would default to the child. In addition, Ethan is absolutely vulnerable to his loved ones words and actions against him. Usually it is the entire balance of his self-esteem.

Being the oldest of ten children, Ethan had a great deal of responsibility bestowed on him. His mother and father had a great deal of romance between them, which lead to a lot of nights out with Ethan to babysit. While he may have been tasked with many things, for reasons unknown to him he was never allowed to leave the house.
When Ethan was eight, his father explained to him that their family supported the rebel cause. And because of such, rebels in need would be able to stay in their home. While distressed at this, Ethan consented to keeping it a secret and assisting when he could.

Given how they all weren't allowed to leave the house, Ethan had a close bond to each of his siblings. His father taught him many nuances of computer programming and his mother nursing. Though fights soon began to arise in the household. Money was tight and many women—potential romantic or sexual partners— were entering and exiting the house as they pleased. Eventually it came revealed that Ethan's father was cheating on his mother. His mother was understandably heartbroken at this revelation. But it seemed as though bigger concerns awaited the family.
It became revealed that a particular woman Terrence had an affair with was actually undercover for the government. And so they had enough evidence to convict Terrence and his family of treason. Their house was invaded in the middle of the night, Ethan having hidden in the closet at the sound of the door breaking open. But when he heard commotion in the living room, he slowly crept towards the location. All of his siblings were lined up beside his parents. And Ethan watched as all of them were shot execution style.
Traumatized, Ethan remained in the house for a week without eating or looking for help. Eventually several rebels looking for a place to stay, came across the thirteen year old boy sitting in a pool of blood. From there, they brought him to main base.
It was clear Ethan's specialty was in logistics. He would go for hours without talking as he worked with computers or wrote out a new strategy. And from there, Ethan was able to achieve his own base for such concepts.
