A Rough Morning
As Maul walked through the base, he noticed there was only a skeleton crew working. He would pass by a rebel and even though they didn't seem like any threat, Maul stayed on the other side of hall. He didn't want to be perceived as weak but he didn't want to seem like a threat either. After Maul walked around for some time, he caught a whiff of something delicious. He followed his nose until he found himself in some kitchen. Standing at the stove cooking, he saw Satine with an apron on. He took a step onto the tile flooring and Satine noticed him.
"Oh, hello Maul!" Satine exclaimed as she turned to see Maul for a second before returning most of her attention back to her food. Maul stood there searching his memory, he knew her. She had helped him a long time ago. Was it really long ago, Maul pondered. Something in the back of his mind told him that she could be trusted. Something told Maul that she would understand anything like Ahsoka. Something in Maul felt disappointed when Satine had noticed him, something he couldn't quite remember. As Maul dove deeper on wether to she was worth trusting her voice broke his concentration.
He had raised his head and eyes to look directly at her as he continued to stand there watching her back.
"Do you want me to make you something to eat?" It was as if her question went directly to his stomach as it growled and he got excited for the food that smelled good enough to eat right as it was cooking. He licked his dried lips as he walked up behind her and looked over her shoulder to see the source of the pleasant smell.
"It's not ready yet I still have to make more so there's plenty for both of us." Satine laughed as she turned her head to see Maul drooling over the food. "Maul! You're drooling! Go on and sit in the mess hall. I'll come out with the food once I'm done."
Maul had nonchalantly wiped his drool away, yet stood there debating on if he could trust her to actually make his food. He always heard the guards talking about poisoning his food between his torture sessions. His stomach told him to trust her since she had food. She seemed like she would give him as much food as he wanted. She wouldn't take his food away or throw it at him.
"Go on, Maul. Go and sit down." Satine's voice was as soft and gentle as silk. Against the arguments in his mind, he sat on the closest seat to the kitchen. As he sat, he got more and more irritable and impatient as he waited. He stood up from his seat and approached the kitchen trying to be as quiet as a mouse. He peaked his head around the corner to see Satine still cooking. He walked back to his seat and sat back down.
After a couple more minutes passed, his stomach roared demanding to eat and he licked his rough lips once more. Standing back up, he made his way back into the kitchen and looked into cabinets not knowing where what he was after was at.
"Maul? What are you looking for?" Satine raised her voice as she watched Maul search through the cabinets then pull out a cup. "Oh! You're thirsty, um, I think there's some blue milk in the conservator over there."
Maul paused for a moment to look around for what she was talking about and looked at the only few cabinets and the thing he didn't look through. He guessed the thing he didn't look through was the conservator. After picking up, what he guessed was the blue milk, since it was blue, he begun to fill his cup. His mind started to become enraptured in the mouth water smell until he nearly overfilled his cup.
Satine listened to him put the milk away and close the conservator. She couldn't help but hear how loud he was gulping down the milk. "Slow down, Maul! It's not going anywhere. You're going to end up choking on it."
Just as she predicted, he ended up coughing halfway through basically inhaling the milk like he's hadn't had anything to drink in weeks.
"I warned you that would happen." She lightly scolded him, "Now go and sit down the food is almost done."
Upon hearing that he food was nearly done, Maul had set his halfway filled cup on the counter and went right back to his seat. His mind wondered as he sat down. He kept scratching his mind trying to figure out what made him think she was so nice, it all could have been a ruse and she could have poisoned his food.
Maul sighed as he paused on that one thought. Everyone could just be waiting for the right time to get rid of him. Everyone looked at him like he was a sort of threat when he walked into the base, yet Satine and Ahsoka both looked upon him and treated him with kindness and acceptance. Obi-wan, on the other hand, Maul could see the heavy weight of worry in his eyes. Maul knew he was going to be tossed aside soon if he had too many encounters with Obi-wan, it would spark a fight with Feral. Maul felt the scar running along the side of his face. Maul couldn't remember why Obi-wan would want to be with him all those years ago. He was so scarred and emotional now, he could only imagine how he must have been back then.
Maul jumped slightly when Satine sat the plate of food down in front of him. He was so deep in his thoughts that Feral could have walked into the room and tried to start a fight with him without Maul even noticing.
Attempting to push his thoughts away, Maul tried to eat as quick as he could. The thought of Feral wanting a fight prompted him to want to return to his room and the shadows as quickly as possible. The more he could stay hidden in the shadows, the less his brother will see him as a threat.
However, once finishing his plate, he quickly took notice that he was still hungry. His eyes wondered over to Satine's plate of food as she ate peacefully as if there was no threat lurking in the galaxy. Maul had wanted to return to his room, however his stomach was overruling his mind as his eyes were glued to her plate. It had only took a couple short seconds before she noticed him staring at her food.
"Are you still hungry, Maul?" Her voice was so smooth and soft that it had barely registered in Maul's mind even though they were the only two in room. Or they were until Maul looked up and noticed Obi-wan and Feral entering.
Satine had gone on talking, but all Maul was trying to pay attention to was how they physically saw him, like how they saw Satine, as if nothing had ever happened and he still had some pride left.
"There you are, brother," Feral's voice was scratchy, quiet, and dry. It was enough to make Maul start to panic on the inside.
"I couldn't find you when I woke up, so I had gotten Feral to help me look for you." Obi-wan quickly cut Feral off. The speed and worrisome sound in his voice was enough for Maul to realize that they had seen his panic somehow. Maul had looked over at Obi-wan for a flash second before darting his eyes to his younger brother, then back to his empty plate.
Feral's deep raspy breathing only put Maul off even more. Feral had begun to walk away until he stopped and sighed. He pinched the bridge of his nose trying to stay awake long enough to make it back to his room. "Look, brother, we had only came to see if you were alright. We were worried that you had ran off somewhere when we couldn't find you."
Maul had let out a scoff under his breath that made Obi-wan looked concerned between the two brothers. Feral had begun to get agitated with his older brother's childish temper faster due to his lack of proper sleep. He raised his hands as he tried to think of something to say, but just waved it off and quickly let his arms fall back to his side. He was too tired to treat his older brother like some youngling. Without another word, Feral had continued his journey back to his room leaving Obi-wan behind.
"Maul, Feral is just trying to look out for you." Obi-wan spoke after a long silence. The old Jedi hardly knew what to do in a situation like this. "He's trying to help."
It seemed like a reflex when Maul rolled his eyes to the comments his old mate had just made. Somehow, through the lingering tension, Maul felt his stomach rumble and his eyes fall back down to Satine's food. His mouth began to water when she gave in and gave a small portion of her food to Maul.
"We both were concerned about where you could have gone." Obi-wan paused as he watched Maul ignore him and eat the given food slowly.
"We thought that you could have been hurt somewhere, Maul." Obi-wan spoke again as Maul continued to eat. Obi-wan let out a deep breath shaking his head. "Ignoring things won't make them go away Maul, however, I understand if you need your space and to get comfortable here since it's where we're going to be for a while."
Obi-wan waited many moments for Maul to at least acknowledge his presence in the room, but Maul still didn't even glance over at him when he was done eating. Obi-wan took in a deep breath as he stood up from sitting next to Maul and slowly left the room.
Maul didn't turn to look anywhere beyond his plate until he heard the room's door shut behind Obi-wan. He felt his stomach knotting up, he swallowed his saliva in hopes to soothe his dry and tightening throat as he stared at the door for many seconds before he got up and began to leave the room himself, before Satine could see his eyes begin to water up.
