09 Buttercup

"Stare at the dark too long and you will eventually see what isn't there."

- Unknown

You find yourself sitting at a rooftop restaurant opposite Jimin, his ash blonde hair shining under the fairy lights scattered across the rooftop along with dim lamps and red roses on each table. In Jimin's defence, he did not know that the theme develops into something so romantic after sunset as he has only been here once during afternoon hours.

"The food is good, I promise." He says earnestly.

"And so is the price. Do I have to donate my kidney to pay?"

"You don't have to worry about that, it's on me." He winks at you.

"How gentlemanly of you." You roll your eyes and divert your attention back to the mouth-watering menu selections. The place is quite crowded, sounds of silverware clattering and an obnoxious child whining can be heard distantly. It's a bit cold outside so you have left your coat wrapped over your body.

"It feels like it'll snow soon," your rub your arms to feel cosier, waiting for dessert to arrive after gobbling an entire full course meal for two all by yourself. "But really Jimin, you didn't have to do all this for me."

Jimin looks around – tall buildings lit up and sounds of all kinds of vehicles audible. He smiles and looks back at you. "It will be nice to have snow. And it's nothing, really. Just sit and enjoy the food."

You teasingly poke his arm and pout at him.

"Oh yes, you love snow," you reminisce about the days Jimin and you used to walk around the city, holding hands and having snowball fights. "Remember when we were together, and we used to have snowball fights?"

"How can I forget? You were so good at it that you left me sore for days." He pouts, making you giggle. "Don't laugh now, you were really harsh on me."

"I promise I won't do that again!" you protest, making you both break into fits of laughter. A comfortable silence follows by, making you both look at each other. The staring competition is interrupted by the waitress arriving with the dessert – a sizzling brownie, much loved by you. You both politely thank her and dig in.

"So, what went wrong between us?" Jimin says with a gloomy sigh.

"I don't know." After a moment's reflection, you start, "maybe we grew up. We both fell in love with each other in High School, that was a long, long time ago. We are completely different people now, we like different things, and we live in different places. I think we kinda figured it out long ago that things were not going to work out as the older we get."

"We did grow out of each other."

"You know, Jimin, when we ran into each other for the first time after our breakup, I just wanted to hug you so tight and never let you go..." you can see the pain in Jimin's eyes. "And then so much happened between us after that, but it just made me realise that it takes time to move on but with time it becomes better. I loved you so much, I still do to some extent, and will probably feel like that in the future too. But sometimes we just need to let go."

"I know. Right back at you." His eyes are becoming moister as the minute passes by. "But I guess this is it."

You look down at your palm, attempting to hide the tears that are threatening to spill. "So, what's next for you?"

"I haven't thought much. I'm thinking of settling down in America, but I definitely want to switch jobs, something that gives me a thrilling adventure and keeps me away from the family business, or family in general."

"I love that you are older than me, you never cease to inspire me with your experience, hard work and dedication."

"Now, you're just flattering me," Jimin waves at you in dismissal. "What's in for your future, Buttercup?"

"I don't kn –" you take a sudden pause. Buttercup? Your heart starts beating at a very fast rate, it feels like you will shrink any second. The blood in your systems seems to have stopped flowing. The innocent nickname coming out of Jimin's mouth makes you want to throw up. This cannot be.

"W-what?" you choke.

"What, what?" he looks confused. You watch him, unable to believe your thoughts. He appears to be so innocent. He cannot do anything this cruel, right? Right?

"I- nothing. I've gotta go, Wendy will be home soon, and she gets all fuzzy after exams and... Dinner was great, thank you." You hurriedly gather your belongings and bolt out, leaving a rather baffled Jimin behind. "Goodbye, Jimin!"

Everything dawns on you in the span of only a few seconds. He was the only person who knew about that day, who knew your favourite colour was baby pink and you received the cushion the very next time. He knows your current address, was oh-so persistent to be with you lately, even to the point that he wanted the whereabouts of the apartment you might get in the future. He knew you inside out, enough to know your weaknesses, and when and how to strike when you least expect it. And most importantly, everything started right around the time he returned in your life.

"It seems like a stupid prank someone who already knows you are playing."

But why?
