Obsession. It was a deadly beast. A killer. Something that consumed people and destroyed them entirely. It withered away at the soul and ate it alive, ending the one it controlled and making them lose their minds. It drove everyone away from them. No one wanted to be around someone who had no control—who had lost all control. Leaving their minds wandering in an empty space, nothing but the darkness and shadows around, their souls gone and turned to dust, rotten and black, and them completely alone, just a shell of the person they once used to be.

Jealousy. It was the thing obsession rooted from in most cases. It was the start of it all—the ashes the phoenix rose from, the soil in which a flower grew. It tangled the heart and mind, a wrapping of tunnel vision on the subject, not letting up on the grip it had on what they did. It was a disease. Once it got in your blood, it was never leaving. It corrupted its host and broke them down more and more with each passing day.

Lillian Russo was never one to be jealous of others, to wish for the things she didn't have or hate someone because they did have them. She was never corrupted, broken, or crazy with such rage, sadness, or anger towards one person because she thought they were better than her. Not even the popular, pretty, rich girls in her school, the ones who captured everyone's attention, like Lydia Martin, a girl who had not only beauty and money but also brains and wit, though she hid her intelligence to fit into the perfect image of what people thought she should be—pretty, confident, and brainless. That was something Lillian was glad for. Something that she'd pride herself on. It wasn't something others should've been ashamed of—a little bit of jealousy was normal to have, but she never obsessed over anyone.

That was until Allison Argent showed up in Beacon Hills on the first day of the second semester of their sophomore year.

Allison was a beautiful girl. With her bright, dimpled smile and dazzling eyes, she seemed as sweet as could be. And she was instantly sucked into Lydia's crowd, so there must've been something extra special about her. And the strawberry blonde wasn't the only one to have noticed that.

Scott McCall, the boy that Lillian had been crushing on since she first met him in second grade, though the affection went unnoticed, instantly noticed the new girl. He became so fond of her so quickly, it was almost like whiplash. He looked at her as soon as he met her in the most different way he had ever looked at Lillian, a girl he'd known for years—someone who actually noticed him. It was like he had instantly fallen in love, and that made Lillian's blood boil to no end.

He didn't even know her, for God's sake! How could he have possibly been in love!?

And she knew it wasn't any of the insta-love bullshit. That was only in the movies. But apparently, it'd happened to Scott. He couldn't seem to stay away from Allison, following her around like a lost little puppy, his gleaming brown eyes watching her every move as they practically turned heart-shaped. He'd never done that with Lillian or any other girl, so why her? Why Allison, the girl he'd just met? What was so special about her?

Those questions drove Lillian insane, though she was good at hiding what they made her feel—a little too good; it was almost frightening. Obsession took over her in an instant. Obsession, wondering why Scott liked Allison, obsession over what Allison had that she didn't, obsession over why Scott was so quick to notice someone he didn't even know and not the girl right in front of him that'd been in love with him since she met him all those years ago. It wasn't fair, and she couldn't seem to stay away.

No matter how extreme her jealousy and obsession got, Lillian still couldn't seem to bring herself to hate either Scott or Allison. It was actually quite the opposite.

If only she knew what that was to bring.
