Chapter 26: Sweetest Goodbye

Dear Readers,

The chapter below was the original conclusion to the story. I didn't know when I wrote it that I would go on to create a whole Obsessed series! If you want to know exactly how Jane responded to Adam's marriage proposal, and all the details of what happened between them afterward, please check out the sequel, Hollywood Remake. There is also a third book set further in the future called The Liar's Wife.

You can find all the books under my profile (@adam_and_jane). Please follow me to get notifications as new chapters are published.

Thanks so much for reading! If you took the time to comment and vote, then thank you all the more. Your feedback means the world to me.

Love always,

Jane sank down onto the couch and rooted around in her briefcase for the copy of Us Weekly she had stowed there. The cover had caught her eye while checking out at the grocery store this morning, and she'd impulsively thrown it in her shopping basket.

Old habits die hard, she'd thought to herself with a smile.

She'd been waiting all day for a moment of solitude to peruse it at her leisure, and she gave a small sigh of satisfaction now as she pulled it out. Before she could get past the cover, she was interrupted by the shrill ring of her cell phone. She dug it out of her briefcase and glanced at the caller ID: Marcy.

"What's up?"

"Hey, just calling to see if you're OK."

"I'm fine," Jane said. "Really. It's fine."

"I know this isn't exactly what you wanted..."

"I can handle it," Jane said. "I'm a big girl."

"OK." Marcy seemed satisfied. "You know I'm always here if you want to talk."

"I know." Jane smiled into the phone. "Thanks."

"OK, I gotta run."

"Wait! Marcy, are you still there?"

"I'm here," Marcy said. "What is it?"

"Just - you're a good friend. Thank you."

Marcy paused for a beat before replying. "You know I just want you to be happy, right? That's all I ever wanted."

"I know," Jane replied. She heard the sound of children's voices laughing in the background.

"Listen, I'm at soccer practice," Marcy said. "I have to go."

"OK, I'll talk to you later."

"I love you, Jane."

"I love you too."

Jane had been studying the magazine cover as they spoke. Where had they gotten that picture? She couldn't recall ever seeing it before. It must have been pre-2002, before Songs About Jane. Could it be from that gig at the Bowery Ballroom?

A hazy memory flashed through her mind. They'd all been backstage with John Mayer's people before the show. The publicist had brought in a photographer and wanted to include some shots of the opening act. Adam had been bouncing off the walls, cracking an endless stream of jokes and hamming it up in the photos, keeping everyone entertained as usual.

"What are you looking at?"

Jane nearly jumped out of her skin at the sound of the voice behind her. She hadn't heard anyone come in.

"What? Nothing," she said, as she scrambled to hide the magazine behind a couch cushion.

"So I guess you saw it, huh?"

Jane took a deep breath, pulling the magazine back out from its hiding place. "It's fine. It's not a big deal."

"You know this is just the first of many."

She shrugged and smiled slowly. "Life is messy, right?"

"Life is messy," Adam agreed.

"Anyway, look at the picture," Jane said, gathering herself up off the couch and standing to show him the magazine.

Adam took it from her and looked at it for a long moment. "God, that's old. When was that taken?"

"It must have been at the Bowery Ballroom, before the show that night."

She watched his face as the same memories came back to him. They both knew exactly which show she meant. He remembered that photo shoot just before he went on stage. He had been messing around and grabbed Jane by the hand, pulling her into the shot and catching her in his arms as she stumbled, laughing, into the frame.

"Well, I'll be damned," he said softly as he studied the picture of the two of them arm in arm, heads thrown back in laughter. "Us Weekly finally got something right."

She smiled. "I like the headline too."

"Nah," he said. "Too wordy."

She read it again over his shoulder. Adam Levine and Lost Love Reunite, Marry in Whirlwind Romance.

"That pretty much sums it up. What would you have said?"

He held the magazine at arm's length and cocked his head to the side for a moment, pondering, before breaking into a self-satisfied grin. "How about: Adam Levine Will Never Write a Decent Breakup Song Again."

"Don't say that! Can't you still do nice breakup songs?"

"Nice breakup songs?" He eyed her skeptically. "Is that a thing?"

"You know, like Sweetest Goodbye." She started singing: "How does it feel to know you'll never have to be alone, when you get home."

He smiled and wrapped his arms around her as he joined her in the next line: "There must be somewhere here that only you and I can go, so I can show you how I feel...." Jane closed her eyes and tilted her head back for a kiss, but Adam let go of her instead.

"Nope," he said, shaking his head. "No more goodbyes — sweet or otherwise."

She pouted. "Well, there goes your career."

"Hey!" he protested. "At least I've still got sex songs." He started rifling through his pockets, muttering, "Where is that thing I was working on?" He pulled out a crumpled Starbucks napkin, and she grabbed it out of his hands, struggling to decipher the scrawled handwriting:

Got me so high and then she dropped me,

But she got me, she got me, she got me.

Took me inside and then she rocked me.

She keep me up all night.

This is what it sounds like:

Wooo!

"It's called Lucky Strike," he said as she squinted at it.

She looked up and raised her eyebrows at him. "You really think it's appropriate to sing this about the mother of your future children?"

"What did you expect, a love song?" he smirked. "You married Adam Levine."

He put his hands on either side of her waist as he spoke, gently kneading her lower back with his fingers. Now he tightened his arms around her again and kissed her, slow and deep. She allowed herself to melt against him, lacing her arms around his neck, but he broke away after a moment.

His face was flushed, eyes dark. "Anyway, that's not the headline I would write," he said.

"Oh?" she asked breathlessly. "Are we still on that?"

He gave her a mischievous half-smile. "I'm thinking: Adam Levine Marries Obsessed Super Fan!"

"Oh, right!" She shoved him away playfully. "I'm the obsessed one, Mr. Songs About Jane?"

He ducked his head, laughing. "OK, OK." He held up his hands in surrender, the smile slowly fading from his face. Then he took both her hands in his and brought each one to his lips, looking tenderly into her eyes.

"OK. How about this one? Adam Levine Marries the Love of His Life."

She pulled her hands free and brought them back up around his neck again, basking in the warm glow in his eyes, before whispering her one-word reply.

"Perfect."
