Chapter 10: Diehard

James finished off the poor thing off with one final, fatal, ≪fireball≫, before opening his eyes for the first time in minutes. "Resume stream" James said, looking at pile of loot and messages popping up on his screen.

Congratulations, you have defeated the MegaMole. +1000 XP, +1 to Mining.
Talk to an NPC in the Mining guild to begin the questline.

[Achievement]: Slayer. Defeat a Boss. +1T

[Achievement]: Mole Masher. Defeat the MegaMole. +1T

[Achievement]: Daring. Defeat a Boss 5 Levels above you. +10T

[Achievement]: Blindfolded. Defeat a Boss with your eyes shut. +15T

Said Achievements will be transferred to your main PLAYGROUND account the next time you join.

James took of the PLAYGear and passed it back to Rachel.

"I'd get the loot and go back to town. You could sell the stuff there, and meet this mining NPC, he'd probably give you a good quest." James advised, then added "Besides, you'd look bad if you died in front of your fans."

Rachel put the PLAYGear on, and another achievement popped up.

[Achievement]: Eek, fight it for me!. Encounter a boss, and pass control to someone else, who defeats said boss. +2T

She then gathered up the loot. There was nothing special just 7 pieces of thick leather, a lot of "Mystery Meat", a rare weapon which was a set of claws called "Slashers of MegaMole", though it was restricted to brawlers, and, oh wait, a spell-book, for a light spell called ≪Mage-light≫. She looked at its stats, and was disappointed, but learnt it anyway.

Mage-light [Spell]
A floating light.
Mana Cost: 5
Duration: 5 minutes
Cooldown: 1 second
James was glad that she did, as ≪Mage-light≫ had its uses, further down the track, and would help with any of the Mining quests, assuming they were similar to the mainland.

SolarSparkle cautiously made her way out of the forest, and James directed her to the town's item vault. She put the loot into the vault and decided to turn off the stream. The pressure was getting to her, especially since Lord of Darkness could be watching.

She left the town, and went into the mountains, to the east. Turns out, monsters can see you easily in terrain without bushes and trees to hide in, and most monsters were much better adapted to the rocky terrain then SolarSparkle.

You Died. 101 XP lost. Respawning in 30 minutes.

It was SolarSparkle's forth death.

Damn! Rachel said, as she took off her headset. "Another death!".

James politely told her that they should use this forced break to have showers. Given something somewhat productive to do, Rachel complied.

30 minutes later, a clean Rachel returned to PLAYGROUND.

30 minutes into gaming, SolarSparkle was going quite well this run, using the plan to farm Wabbits, when out of the bushes came . . . a player?

He looked to be level 1, quite an achievement this early on in the game. He wore a wolfskin cloak and wore two blood-coated daggers in his belt. His name was red.

On PLAYGROUND, when another player attacks another, their username turns a yellow colour, and the player they attacked may retaliate without punishment. If a yellow-named player kills another, their username turns red. Guards attack red-coloured players on sight, and other players may kill them with no punishment. Red-coloured players either hide out in the slums of cities and towns (dangerous) or in the wilderness. Each kill adds 20 minutes to a timer, after which, their username returns to normal.

This person, named "HappyStabby" was probably on a killing spree. Farming players is probably an easy way to get loot and XP, especially as most of the players are either new, or reset their below level 10 accounts, HappyStabby being one of the latter, a level 9 assassin who chose to reset to exploit the newbies.

SolarSparkle was just one in this long line of kills. She took a little longer than expected for HappyStabby to kill, but he killed her all the same.

You have died. 100 XP Lost. Respawning in 30 minutes.

You have received a new title, 'Diehard'. Effect: XP Gain and Health boosted by 20% for 30 minutes after each death. Xp lost upon death reduced to 7%, or 5% within the timer. Bonus if main title: Respawn wait reduced to 10 minutes.
Reward from: First player to die 5 times in 4 hours.

Rachel took of the headset. "I was player-killed" she said frustratingly.

"By whom?" James asked, annoyed that there'd be PK-ers already.

"This guy called HappyStabby." Rachel complained, "Killed me off before I had a chance."

"That's a bit of a pain" James commented, "however, he'll regret it when I join."

"Will you kill him?" Rachel asked. She never knew James to be vengeful.

"Not exactly." James started, "First, I'll taunt him, then I'll utterly humiliate and shame him, and finally I'll kill him."

"Okay..." Rachel said. "I also got a title!" James looked up. Titles were often rare rewards and occurrences, and always special, like his Survivor of Oblivion he would obtain.

"What's the title called?" he asked, curious. "Diehard" Rachel replied.
