IV.
Nyra was awakened by a gentle paw prodding her side. Blinking her large blue eyes open, she found Taka standing over her, his expression a mix of excitement and nerves. "U-um, hello," he stammered, his voice a bit uncertain.
Nyra smiled warmly, a gesture that transformed her features into a picture of gentle power. She gave a deep, leisurely yawn, revealing her sharp fangs and the impressive rows of her teeth, her long forked tongue curling gracefully. "Taka," she murmured fondly, stretching her limbs as her claws extended, lightly grazing the rock beneath her.
Her wings flared momentarily, their width nearly causing Taka to lose his balance on the narrow ledge they shared. He wobbled for a moment, wide-eyed, before regaining his footing. Nyra folded her wings with care, bringing her focus back to him with a curious arch of her brow. "What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice a blend of curiosity and gentle amusement at his unexpected visit.
"W-well, I was wondering if you want to go hunting together, you know, to get us some breakfast," Taka said, shuffling his paws nervously. Nyra rose to her full height, towering gracefully over the young lion. She glanced over with her vivid blue eyes to where Mufasa and Sarabi were conversing, a hornbill perched nearby, engaged in lively chatter with them. A soft smile touched her lips.
"Sure," she replied warmly. With a graceful leap, she descended from the rock, her movements fluid and elegant. Taka followed her lead, though his approach was more cautious and a bit clumsier.
Nyra padded over to the lounging lions. "We'll be out hunting," she informed them. Mufasa nodded in acknowledgement, though his gaze lingered on her for a moment longer than necessary.
As Nyra and Taka moved through the tall grasses, Sarabi turned to Mufasa with a teasing grin. "You like her, eh?" she quipped, her voice playful and knowing.
Mufasa blushed, his usually confident demeanor faltering for a brief moment. "What? N-no, as a friend, yes," he stammered, his eyes betraying the depth of his admiration despite his protestations.
Sarabi shook her head, flicking her paw thoughtfully. "She's a good ruler, I've heard," she said with a note of admiration.
Mufasa looked at her with interest. "You know her, then?"
Sarabi nodded, recalling memories that seemed both distant and vivid. "She used to come to Mieleie, where I'm from. She'd visit us sometimes, and she blessed me and my family, giving us charms that would keep us safe."
A shadow crossed Sarabi's face as she continued, her voice tinged with sadness. "After she left to rule her own stretch of land, that's when Kiros and the outsiders attacked." Her eyes clouded with the weight of past troubles, and for a moment, the joy of the morning faded, replaced by the echoes of loss and struggle.
Mufasa listened intently, a newfound respect mingling with his admiration for Nyra. It was clear that she had touched many lives, and not just their own.
"Do you think Nyra will go back to rule her land when we find Mieleie?" Mufasa asked, a trace of uncertainty in his voice. Sarabi shrugged thoughtfully.
"I don't know," she replied. "Did she seem happy when you two stumbled into her lands?"
Mufasa thought back to that moment, recalling how calm and serene Nyra had seemed upon their arrival. She had looked content, her presence assured and her body well-fed and strong. He sighed softly, voicing his inner wish. "I wish she would come with us and stay," he murmured, the hope palpable in his tone.
Sarabi gave a small, encouraging smile and flicked her tail gently against his ear, a comforting gesture between friends. "Maybe she will if you ask her," she suggested, her voice carrying a note of optimism.
Her words lingered in Mufasa's mind, planting a seed of possibility that perhaps Nyra might choose to join them in their journey, and not just as a passing guardian, but as a part of their pride's future.
SCENEBREAK
"When you hunt, you want to stay downwind," Nyra advised Taka, who nodded, flicking his ears in acknowledgment. "Downwind, low to the ground, got it," he repeated, crouching down eagerly. "Could I try?"
Nyra stepped aside, directing his attention toward a warthog engrossed in nibbling some seeds. Taka's haunches wiggled with anticipation, his tail twitching unconsciously against the ground. The warthog looked up, startled, just as Taka growled and leapt forward. His aim was close, nearly striking the warthog, but it managed to dart away at the last moment. Taka huffed in frustration.
Before the warthog could escape, Nyra intervened with a swift breath of blue fire. The flames enveloped the warthog, and it collapsed, its escape cut short. "You swished your tail against the ground," Nyra pointed out gently, padding over to where Taka stood, still staring at his paws in disappointment.
She nudged his chin up with her tail, offering a reassuring smile. "Head up, Taka. You'll be a good hunter soon enough," she encouraged. Then, with a graceful stride, she approached the now-lifeless warthog, grasping it by the scruff. She spread her wings wide, preparing to depart. "Hunting takes practice. I'll bring this back to the others," she said, offering him a final nod of encouragement before taking off into the sky, the warthog securely in her grasp.
She approached the others, and Mufasa stood up, a hint of curiosity in his eyes. "There you are. Where's Taka?" he asked.
Nyra gestured with a flick of her wing toward the fields. "Out there, hunting," she murmured, her voice carrying a note of pride for the young lion's efforts. With a fluid motion, she placed the warthog gently at Sarabi's paws.
"I'll go and fetch him," she added, her tone reassuring. Mufasa nodded in response, trusting in her confident assurance.
With that, the dragon swept away once more, her powerful wings carrying her gracefully over the landscape as she went to rejoin Taka, ensuring he was safe and to perhaps lend a guiding hand as he honed his budding hunting skills.
When Nyra reached Taka, she found him surrounded by two white lionesses, their demeanor menacing as they circled him like predators closing in on prey. Nyra hovered above the scene, her sharp eyes watching closely, calculating her approach with caution and precision.
"Where's your little posse, princeling?" snarled one of the lionesses, her ear torn and ragged, marking her as a seasoned fighter. Her voice was dripping with disdain. "And where's the dragon that's leading you?" sneered the other, her eyes narrowed with suspicion.
Taka was visibly trembling, his claws digging into the ground as he struggled to maintain his composure. "I... I don't know who you're talking about. I'm... I'm alone," he stammered, his voice wavering under the weight of their threatening presence.
Nyra's protective instincts flared as she watched the exchange. She descended silently, landing with a powerful yet careful grace behind the aggressive lionesses. Her presence was commanding, a subtle reminder of the power she wielded.
"Funny, I could have sworn I just heard my name," she remarked, her voice calm but carrying an unmistakable edge of authority. Her eyes locked onto the lionesses, her stance poised and ready to intercede on Taka's behalf.
The two lionesses snarled, their eyes narrowing as they fixed their gaze on Nyra. "There you are, you imbecile. Who do you think you are, mingling with strays and rejects?" one of them sneered, her tone laced with contempt.
Nyra huffed softly, her expression unfazed by their hostility. "They came to my kingdom looking for food and water," she replied, her voice steady and resolute. "I offered them that and gave my word I would guide them to Mieleie."
Her words were measured and calm, reflecting not only her authority but the compassion that drove her actions. She stood firm, her presence a protective wall between Taka and the antagonistic lionesses, ensuring that there was no misunderstanding of her intentions—or her capability to defend those under her care.
The lioness with the missing ear snorted derisively. "Really, aren't you above mingling with lions, dragon?" she snapped, her tone dripping with scorn.
Nyra met her gaze steadily, unflinching. "I see no harm in extending kindness to those in need," she replied, her voice as steady and confident as ever. "Whether they are lions or any other creature, I choose my companions based on their character, not their circumstances."
Her words hung in the air with the weight of her conviction, a gentle yet firm reminder that her choices were not dictated by the limitations others might impose. She remained poised, ready to protect Taka and uphold her own principles, regardless of the lionesses' derision.
The one with the scar across her eye snarled, "Let's just report this to Kiros, we can't keep dawdling," and with that, she shot off, her companion with the missing ear huffing before trotting after her.
Once they were gone, Taka ran to Nyra, pressing against her legs for comfort. "Oh, thank the stars you saved me," he huffed, his relief palpable.
Nyra looked down at him with a gentle, reassuring smile, her heart warmed by his trust. "You're safe now, Taka," she soothed, her voice softening. "No one will harm you while I'm here."
She lowered her head to nudge him gently, a gesture of support and protection. Though the threat had passed for the moment, she remained vigilant, knowing that their journey to Mieleie would require continued watchfulness and strength.
