24: Happy Endings?
8 months later
Kassie bounced her leg up and down nervously. She fiddled with her thumbs and kept biting her lip.
Caiden squeezed my hand in a reassuring way.
I wasn't as obvious as Kassie but he could still tell I was nervous.
"Kassie darling," Ayla's mother spoke, placing her hand in Kassie's knee to stop it from bouncing. "You need to calm down."
The brunette nodded.
"I'm just nervous." She muttered.
We all were.
No one had to say anything.
We were all nervous and excited.
"I'm going to get coffee. Anybody else want some?" I asked, standing up.
Mr. and Mrs. Carters shook their heads politely.
"I'm good." Caiden told me, letting go of my hand.
"I'll come." Kassie shot up from her seat.
We started on out way to the Dunkin Donuts in the hospital cafeteria.
"I actually can't believe this is happening." Kassie spoke as we stepped in to the elevator. "My brother is gonna be a dad. And I'm gonna be an aunt."
I too was in slight shock. It was finally happening.
After a month of Ayla and Kade arguing about the baby, Kade came around.
Now he was more excited than ever to be a dad.
They decided they would both have equal parts in their child's life, even though they weren't together.
Caiden and I had made our relationship official a few weeks later, in mid October.
And Kent had confided in me about his new found feelings for Kassie. He told me he was planning on taking her to prom.
Safe to say this school year has been quite eventful.
"It's pretty insane to think about." I replied.
We stepped out of the elevator and headed down a long hall.
"This whole year feels like a weird fever dream." Kassie said.
I couldn't agree more.
"I feel like I'm gonna wake up and none of this will have ever happened." I added.
We took a right and approached the Dunkin Donuts counter.
After putting in our orders and receiving our drinks we quickly made our way back to the waiting room.
"I'm starting to get worried." Kassie admitted, as we sat back down. "She's been in labour for a while."
"If anything was wrong they'd tell us." Caiden reassured.
But Kassie did have a point. It had been almost an hour since Ayla was supposed to have the baby.
But just as that thought crossed my mind, an elated Kade opened the hospital room door and motioned for all of us to come inside.
Slowly we all stepped in to the small room where Ayla laid on a hospital bed, and baby wrapped in a pink blanket, in her arms.
Ayla's smile was bigger than any smile I had ever seen.
The infant grabbed her index finger with her tiny ones.
"Oh my gosh." I whispered.
Ayla passed the small child to Kade, who looked down at her like she was his life.
The pure love in his eyes as he held her warmed my heart.
He passed her over to Mr. Carter who told her how much he loved her as his wife held her small hand.
Next Kassie got to hold her.
"Hello there. I'm your auntie. Auntie Kassie." She told the little girl.
Kassie gave her to me.
"She's the most precious thing in this whole universe." I mumbled.
Her huge blue eyes stared back up at me.
Just as gorgeous as Ayla's eyes.
I loved her so much already.
"Caiden do you want to hold her?" Ayla asked.
His eyes bounced from her to the baby in my arms.
"Uh sure." He seemed hesitant.
When I handed her to him, he instantly calmed down. His jaw unclenched, and he released the tension in his shoulders. A huge smile spread across his pale lips. And his eyes sparkled.
"Hey. Aren't you an adorable little one." He spoke softly.
I noticed the way Ayla looked at him. A smile on her face that told me she was proud of him quickly he became comfortable with her.
Caiden handed the little bundle of joy over to her mother.
"What her name?" Kassie asked.
Ayla and Kade has been keeping it a secret the whole time, wanting to surprise everyone once she was born.
Kade an Ayla exchanged a glance before Kade nodded for her to tell us.
"Ashley Marie Jenkins." She told us.
"Oh I love it." I told them.
"Sweetheart it's beautiful." Mrs. Carters said, putting a hand on her daughter's shoulder.
Everyone else agreed.
###
Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins walked in the the room, more excited than ever.
The first thing they did was hug Ayla, Kade and Kassie.
They unfortunately had both been stuck at work, but the minute they got off, they rushed straight to the hospital.
Kade handed Ashley to his mom and smiled.
"She's so beautiful." Mrs. Jenkins looked down at the baby with overwhelming affection in her eyes.
Tears began to brim them as she smiled largely.
Mr. Jenkins wrapped his arm around his wife, and stroked his hand over the baby's small face.
Caiden's hand slipped around my waist, and he leaned his head on my shoulder.
"She's so adorable." He mumbled in my ear, his grey eyes still trained on the infant.
I hummed in reply.
Having a child as beautiful as Ashley was only a dream for me right now. But I couldn't wait for the day I was ready to have my own child and own family.
But until then, I'd make sure that I was around this adorable little girl as much as I could. Because god knows she deserves the best.
"I love her so much already." I replied.
"Me too." He paused for a moment before adding. "I love you."
I tore my eyes from the little girl, and looked up at his sparkling grey ones.
"I love you too." I breathed.
