Chapter 16.
After mum and dad came home, the guys decided to stay for dinner again. Mum didn't mind since she made enough food for everyone. I think she missed having a full house.
John went on about how we have a gig lined up for Thursday and how were goin to do great. Dad offered to take us and haul our equipment over, which we all decided was best. Richard's car can barely fit us all in, let alone three guitars, amps, speakers, mics and a kit.
"So John, what does your parents think of ye bein in a band?" Mum asked. Everyone stayed silent as John cleared his throat.
"Mum uh...John's..." I began. John interrupted me.
"It's fine George. I'm sure me mum would 'ave been proud of me. She uh, died a few months ago. My father well...I never knew him. Nor do I ever want to know him."
"Oh you poor thing. I'm quite embarrased I asked..."
"No it's alright missus Harrison. Life goes on yeah?" He gave a small smile and finished up eating.
"Still. I'm quite sorry."
He nodded and picked up his plate as everyone else finished. "I'll help with the dishes."
"It's alright love I can manage."
"No no I insist." He said. Mum smiled as they both walked into the kitchen. I sighed and turned to dad.
"She still not letting us go?"
"Not a chance son."
I groaned.
"Don't worry George. I'll keep doin the best I can."
I smiled. "Thanks dad."

One week later
I sat in physics class, lookin for Tracy. She wasn't here. She never did show up to classes again after that one day. I was really hopin to have a chat. Maybe she's so humiliated, she decided to switch schools. Who knows. Birds like her were easy to scare away.
The bell rang and I headed to the canteen to get some food, then meet the guys to go down to the field and practice some more. A week now and mum hasn't changed her mind about New York. Our gig here in town was tomorrow and the talk of the school, was if Keith and his band, were comin to watch. I knew if they did, it'd just end in a schism. And we'd be ready for it.
I tossed Rich a soda as I met up with the lads already sittin next to a tree. I sat down and began eating some crisps as Paul spoke.
"So I was thinkin, we'd sing Helter Skelter last, just to show those cunts we can play just as hard as them."
"Sounds great. Who's singing it?" John asked.
"Well, me of course." Paul said matter of factly.
"Why's that?" John challenged.
"Because I wrote the damn song John."
They began arguing as me and Richard watched. I nudged him.
"Looks like were on the sidelines again."
Richard nodded and handed me his soda. I took a drink as Paul and John huffed. It was silent for a few minutes.
"How about John sings Nowhere man, and Paul sings Helter Skelter. Plus, it'll give us all a chance to sing somethin." I said.
They both shrugged and nodded.
"I suppose."

The next day
It was a small club we were playing at. Dad dropped us off and was planning on picking us up at ten. Mum wasn't too happy but she agreed.
We all sat backstage in a small room, intruments in hand. Another band was performing first as we waited. Richard was fiddling with his drumsticks as John took giant gulps from his beer bottle, Paul wiping the beads of sweat off his forehead. I sat frozen, listening to the cheers outside as they ended.
"Good turnout out there yeah?" Paul said nervously.
"Yeah. Loads of blokes." John said shaking his head.
"Atleast we know they're 'ere for the music. That's what were on about right? The music." I said scratching my head.
We all jumped as a man poked his head in, telling us we were on. John was the first to stand.
"Alright. Come on you lot. We can do this. We'll be great out there. Each and every one of ye give all ye got."
We all nodded as the man out called our band. I swallowed as we made our way out to the stage.
The bright lights shining on us. The giant crowd of people starin at us, waitin for us to begin. John tuned his guitar as Paul said good evening and went on with our first song. Get Back.
Just as we began....They showed up, grinning and with cartons of eggs in hand.
