Daniel Preda is a smart and daring orphan raised by his vile and arrogant uncle. Eventually he gets a job working as a gardener for the charming Lord Graceffa of Graceffa Mill. The unlikely couple rapidly succumb to a deep passion.

On the day of their wedding, a crystal wolf escapes from the attic of Graceffa Mill and starts a fire. Believing that Lord Graceffa is dead, Daniel flees from the church and wanders the hot, dry moors for days until he is rescued by a mysterious boy.

However, although Lord Graceffa is blinded by the fire, he still breathes. Without Daniel he becomes deranged and tight-fisted. He turns to alcohol for comfort. The ghost of the wolf from the attic haunts him.

Meanwhile, thinking Lord Graceffa is dead, Daniel accepts a marriage proposal from his saviour, the mysterious boy. However, one night he believes he can hear Lord Graceffa calling, "Daniel, where are you? Daniel come home!" and he returns to Graceffa Mill.

On Daniel's return, he finds Lord Graceffa drunk and without sight. Mistaking him for the ghost of the crystal wolf, he attacks him with a stress toy and Daniel Preda dies.

As he attends to the body, Lord Graceffa realises what he has done. Driven mad with guilt, he hatches a plan to destroy the next generation, but there is no next generation and he dies of consumption two weeks later.
