14. Aftermath
The week took too long to go by for Nandini's liking, mainly because of her boss's cranky attitude. He seemed irritated with everything and anything the whole week and she knew pretty well none was his fault. Those were just the side effects of being the victim of mind control. He did try not to show his temper when she was around but most of the time it just led to sudden outburst and a lot of coaxing from her.
"Sir has been too strict with us this whole week. I don't even want to attend today's committee meeting." Nandini heard an employee say as she passed through the corridor beside the balcony.
"Yeah did he get ditched or something? It's like he's been taking out someone else frustration on us." The other replied with a sigh.
Nandini lightly knocked on the balcony door as she let herself in. "Lunch hour is over. You both do realize that, don't you?" On hearing Nandini's voice both of them became alert.
"Eh, we were just about to get back to work." One of them replied, scratching the back of his neck.
"Then please get back to work. The event dates have been finalized and we still have a lot to do."
"We know. You don't need to tell us that." The other replied almost sternly. "Let's go." he said to the other as he passed by her side. She turned to leave too but due to her keen hearing sense she heard something that wasn't meant to be heard by her. "Does she have to act like our superior?"
"I hate girls like her. Overbearing." the other added. Running a hand through her hair, she let out a sigh. Why did people always think she was trying to boss them around when in actual she only meant good and nothing else?
"Just let it be." she coaxed herself as she walked away. The whole week had been hectic with the game launch event date nearing. Everyone in the office had been on the edge with the preparations and her boss cranky mood wasn't exactly helping either but she was somehow managing to keep everything together.
"Is this what you call a model?" Manik's sharp voice hit her ears as she reached near his cabin door. "Redo it within tomorrow."
"But sir-" the female employee started only to be cut off by him.
"What! You can't do this simple task?" he sounded irritated and that just fueled up her guilty conscience. This was all her fault. This wouldn't even have happened if not for her brainwashing. She was responsible for it and she knew she needed to fix it somehow. After gulping down a bitter substitute tablet, she knocked on his cabin door.
"Urghh!! come in." Manik snapped. She slightly opened the door and let herself in. On seeing her the deep frown on his forehead smoothed out a bit.
"Go and redo that." his voice sounded lower than before.
"Okay sir." the employee lowered her head a bit and left the cabin. Nandini heard the door close behind her. "The hell is wrong with him. This is the fourth time he told me to redo it." she heard the employee's pissed off voice as she reached him.
"Headache?" she asked him softly and he nodded. "Did you have the pills I gave you?"
"It's too bitter." his face scrunched on the mention of it. Taking out a pill from his top drawer, she handed him the pill. "Good things always taste bitter and it's for your good. So take it."
He made a bad face looking at the pill but nevertheless put it in his mouth and swallowed it down in a go with a glass of water. "Wakk." he made a gagging sound as soon as he had managed to swallow it. "This is just too much for my taste buds to handle."
"Trust me this pills work. It has a slow but the most effective effect." she assured.
"I already took it. So it better start it's effect fast." he buried his face in his palm, simultaneously pressing his forehead with his fingers.
"You really don't feel any changes?"
Skyler was the one who had invented the mind relief pill after conducting numerous experiments on manipulated animals. The pill had an instant effect on calming the animals mind but on humans it took a bit more time, the time period ranging from a week to two.
"I do feel a bit better than yesterday-" he lifted his face from in between his pam and looked at her before adding, "but that's just it and the pill is way too bitter for my taste buds to handle."
"There's just two more doses left." she pushed the file on his desk aside, making some space so that he could lay his head down. "Get some sleep. I'll go check the participants list till then and after that we can go check the gaming site together. You also have a meeting to attend afterwards."
"Okay." he slightly nodded as he placed his hands on the table and rested his head on top of both his hands, simultaneously closing his eyes.
She went out of his cabin after turning down the AC and making sure the curtains were closed. "Tiara is still in coma and they are hiring someone temporarily for her post." Nandini heard someone say. She could hear many other comments and voices. "It's always so noisy." she let out a sigh as she made her way towards the PR department. She was just a step away from entering the PR room when a very familiar voice caught her attention.
"Why are you so sure she's here?"
"Niall." her lips instantly curved upwards into a smile as she sprinted to the balcony.
"Found you." her brother's warm voice reached her ears from above her as soon as she entered the balcony.
"We meet again!" an unfamiliar voice followed along. She looked up to see her brother along with a familiar face in the floor above her. One moment they were up there and the next moment they were right in front of her. "Niall." she took her brother into a bone crushing hug. "Oh my god!!"
"Hell. I can't believe this." she loosened her hold on him and looked at him. "How did you get here?"
"Obviously through that massive portal."
"And the council allowed it?"
"They had no other choice but to allow it." he scoffed in disbelief. "I crossed a whole damn world through a portal to see you and that's the first thing you ask me. I mean-" he lightly patted her back. "like no I miss you or how are you?"
She chuckled. "I freaking missed you so much Niall."
"I missed you too naughty." he raised his hands to ruffle her hair but she instantly stepped away from him. "Not my hair please."
"Still so defensive."
"I have to be."
"Hii." The guy next to her brother waved at her. "Remember me, right?"
Nandini awkwardly waved back. She didn't think that she would meet the guy from the parking lot again, at least not this soon and that too with her brother. "Umm Arya. Right? Last time from that parking lot."
"Yeah." Arya nodded with a cheeky smile.
"You both know each other?" Niall asked, surprised. He was almost sure they wouldn't know each other for Arya had joined the palace administration as a filler after Nandini had been assigned to the human world.
"No we don't." she denied. "I just met him once when he kind of attacked my boss."
"Attacked?!"
"Oh that wasn't intentional." Arya defended. "Remember I told you about that parking lot incident with a guy who had sweet blood."
"Wait! the vampire who gave you that tablet was her?" Niall's forehead scrunched.
Arya nodded. "Yeah, she was the one who gave me that tablet. Thanks to which I blacked out for a whole day."
"Nandini!! what's all this about?"
"What?!"
"Did you increase the drug proportion in your tablet?" he asked and that moment she knew she was screwed.
"Umm about that.. I-I just remembered I had to urgently check the participants lists." she hit her head lightly, pretending as though she had forgotten to do something really important. She turned around to leave but Niall came in front of her and blocked her way. "Nandini!!" his voice raised a bit. "You are not leaving without telling me what all this is about."
"Urghh I.. I did increase the drug proportion, but it isn't that much of a significant change. I just increased it by a percent." she lied.
"Is that so? Okay then tell me in what proportion did you change the mixing ratio?"
"I... I don't really remember. And seriously Niall don't tell me you crossed a whole damn world through that port-"
"Nandini!" he interrupted. "Spill."
She let out a sigh. She could really never win against brother. "4:6"
"The hell. You must be kidding me. In what way is that 1%? That's like 10%."
"Wow, so that was why I felt so drowsy." Arya interrupted.
"That's the only side effect. Extra drowsiness that's it." Nandini said in her defense.
"Give me your tablet. Let me test it out."
"I don't have it now. I already finished-"
"Nandini!" his tone was strict and she knew he had no plans to let this matter go. Unwillingly she took out her tablet box and handed it to him. "How many do you intake in a day?"
"Four." she said in a low tone as she looked away from him.
"That's too much." Arya spoke out, only to be glared at by Nandini.
"Why are you doing this to yourself? We are immortals but that does not mean you can be this reckless." Niall scolded. "Do you want to fall into an eternal slumber?"
"It's not that harmful. I tested it."
"Then why did Arya black out for a whole day?" Niell confronted.
"May be he is more used to intaking light doses."
"No, I usually take the normal dose." Arya interjected and that moment all she wanted to do was stuff a paper into Arya's mouth so that he could just stop interrupting.
"You are not taking this, at least not until I test it. Do you get it?" Niall spoke out this time.
"But-"
"Nandini do you get it?"
"Yes, brother." she nodded, looking down to the ground. She was screwed. She knew she was.
