ELENA MOORE had been living in the guest room of her big sister's house for four months. After graduating high school in San Francisco, the youngest of the three Moore sisters found that she missed Maddie, who'd moved all the way to Montana after getting married a few years ago. Conveniently, a job opened up for a girls' soccer coach at the local high school in Green Hills, Montana. When Elena told Maddie she'd gotten the job based off her stellar record as a soccer star in school, the sisters were thrilled.

Of course, rather than have her rent a place, Maddie instantly offered the guest room of her home that she shared with her husband, Tom Wachowski. Tom was thrilled to have Elena around, always finding Green Hills too slow and boring of a town. Having a new face around would brighten his days and make things more exciting.

Well, maybe having an eighteen-year-old under his roof while having to toe the line between authority figure and friend was a bit too exciting sometimes, but Tom enjoyed Elena well enough. She was someone to watch TV with because both loved sports. The soccer team, which was usually shit, looked to be improving. And Elena made fast friends with everyone in town.

She was rowdy and strong-willed. Elena was competitive and loved anything that required being outside. She was just what Tom thought Green Hills needed.

So, having her around was perfect in the Wachowski family's eyes.

LIAM WACHOWSKI hadn't been home to Green Hills since he left at eighteen to go to school to become an engineer. He'd never got along with his brothers, who'd always preferred sports and outdoor activities and rowdiness in general. It wasn't that he hated his brothers. They all loved each other — they just didn't click.

When Tom, the one Liam liked the most, got married a few years back, Liam had been too engrossed in his difficult curriculum to actually attend the wedding that'd been held in California. It'd been years since he'd seen his brothers, and he'd never even met Tom's wife, Maddie — he'd only seen pictures in the Christmas card they sent every year that included their dog, Ozzie.

But now, Liam was freshly graduated from MIT with several job offers on the table, most of which were in big cities like New York and Chicago — Liam wasn't a big city kind of guy. He liked slow and uninterrupted and not overstimulating.

He liked Green Hills.

Maybe it was simple nostalgia and fear of what was to come now that he was twenty-five and about to really step into his adult life, but Liam missed home. He missed the donut shop he used to study at and the baseball fields he also used to study at when he was forced to go to Tom's games. He wanted to go home and remember what it was like to live somewhere peaceful and calm.

So, with job offers still waiting to hear from him, on a random Tuesday afternoon, Liam packed a bag and set his GPS to go to the address that was always on Tom's Christmas cards, ready to show up unannounced.

Little did he know that Green Hills had a lot in store for him — none of it peaceful or calm.
