Chapter Ten - The Finish Line
Despite the fact that the previous night's session was a much tamer affair, I was still a little hungover. It wasn't like the traditional hangover with the thumping headache, dry throat and feeling of utter shame. This one was just sheer lack of sleep that was bringing me down. Apparently, when it comes to drinking I'm no longer a spring chicken.
This is the exact reason I never drink the night before going to work but yet there I was sitting at my desk with my forehead resting on my folded arms when I started to feel the sensation that someone was watching me. I opened my eyes and looked up to find Joel standing over me.
"Heeeeeeey," He said in his awkward stretched tone.
"How long have you been standing there?" I asked, looking around to hopefully find someone to pawn Joel off to but there was no one else there.
"Only a few minutes," He shrugged. When he didn't elaborate, I pressed him for another answer.
"What do you want?"
"Oh noooothing. I'm just checking in," He smiled, totally creeping me out.
"Well I'm ok," I said, stretching the truth slightly. I really needed my bed.
"That's good. That's good . . . " He smiled again before shutting up and standing still.
I remained silent, as did he. His arms swinging back and forth created the only sound in the room. I was half expecting to see some tumbleweed blow past us at any moment.
"Hey David!" A shout thankfully broke the stalemate between Joel and me.
We looked to see that in this case, Eddie was the tumbleweed.
"Yeah?" I questioned, more excited than I'd been about anything that day.
"There's somebody here to see you," He said in a conspiratorial tone. I was slightly worried as to what sort of game he was playing but then I was instantly relieved when I saw Melissa standing behind him, waving excitedly.
"Sorry Joel, gotta go!" I leapt out of my chair and bounced across the room.
I could only vaguely hear Joel asking "Can I come?"
*
"So what made you think of this?" I asked, gesturing to the Subway sandwich that was in front of me. We were sat at a table by the window, just a few blocks away from work.
"I dunno," She shrugged. "I just thought it would be nice to meet you for lunch for a change. You were complaining how boring work was so I thought I'd be your hero!" She was dressed in typical office attire, so we probably looked so weird sitting in a sandwich shop.
"You have no idea how much I appreciate it!" I decided not to tell her exactly how weird Joel was being. Then she'd never come back for sure.
"Why on earth did you go out last night anyway?" She asked after we'd finished eating. Apparently it looked pretty obvious that I was suffering.
"Dean's poor now," I told her, knowing full well that it made no sense to an outsider.
"Wouldn't it have been better to not go out at all?" She asked the question that any sane person would be wondering.
"You would think so!" I admitted with a chuckle. "So there will definitely be no clubs this weekend. I think we've got him addicted. We need like a nightclub rehab."
As Melissa and I shared another laugh at my friend's expense, I decided that now was the time to reveal to her, my master plan.
"You know what, that reminds me of something," I said confidently.
"What's that?" Her eyes narrowed in curiosity.
"Instead of going out this weekend, we're just going to have a bunch of people over for a little get together at the apartment."
"So a party?"
"No, a get together," I corrected, not really knowing the difference. It just sounded more mature. "You should totally come. You know, if you want to that is."
She smiled as she seemed to think about it before nodding.
"Sure. Why not? It could be fun."
"Feel free to bring some friends if you want too," I offered. "You know, in case you don't really feel comfortable just hanging out with me all night."
"Oh don't worry. I'll be comfortable," She said with a wink.
I may have been over-thinking things a little bit, but I was convinced that she'd just confirmed that she was going to sleep with me. Whether I was right or wrong, I couldn't hide the massive grin that had spread across my face.
*
"We're having a party?" Dean asked me that night.
We were both standing in my room after I'd just told him what had happened that day.
"Yes. Is that alright?" I asked, even though it was probably too late if it wasn't.
"I guess. But who are we going to invite? At such short notice too," He argued.
"Dude, we're in our late twenties. No one has anything better to do these days. Just invite everybody you want. Even some of the chicks you've been trying to hook up with lately. It'll be great!"
"Wouldn't that be a bit awkward?"
"No! It'll be funny. Plus you're basically guaranteed to get laid by somebody."
"What does Eddie think of this?"
"He'll be cool with it. I haven't asked him yet though 'cause he's out at Kiwi German Sarah's place."
"No he's not," Dean laughed.
"What?" I was startled. I was sure that he'd said he was going there. Maybe this hangover was worse than I thought.
"They were gonna go there but she's here instead. Something to do with a leak in her apartment," Dean explained.
As if the power of our conversation had willed it to happen, we started to hear loud banging sounds coming from the wall. The wall joined onto Eddie's room.
"You've gotta be shitting me?" I asked whatever higher power had allowed this to happen, but like Dean, it remained silent.
"Oh Eddie! Fuck yes!" Came the muffled cry from next door.
We didn't want to stay and listen but we couldn't help it, at least for about a minute or so before we both bolted out of the room as fast as we could.
I know what you're wondering and I'm afraid I don't know the answer. Despite her loud moans and giggles, I still couldn't tell if she was a Kiwi or a German.
*
"Twice in one day! To what do I owe this pleasure?" Melissa asked, sitting across from me in the bar downtown.
"I guess I just can't stay away," I smirked. She rolled her eyes at my obvious flirting but if she'd known how true it was, I'm sure I would've gotten a much different reaction. "That, and Eddie is banging a girl in the apartment and it's like we've suddenly got a PA system."
"Eww."
"Tell me about it. I had to get out of there. It was like a Maroon 5 video," I shuddered at the memory.
"Well in other news . . ." She started, clearly also disturbed, "I'm gonna go to the bathroom. I'll be back in a sec and I'll get us some more drinks on the way back".
"Didn't you just go?" I asked, instantly regretting it.
"Do you really want to ask me about that?" She laughed. I motioned my lips zipping closed and let her go.
"Seriously, what is with you and the water?" I asked. No wonder she always had to go to the bathroom.
"It's just something I've always done," Melissa shrugged. "Now I'm too old and stuck in my ways," She laughed as she took off her denim jacket and placed it over the back of her chair. "So did you just leave Dean at home to deal with that by himself?"
"Nah he's gone to the library to get some writing done," I replied.
"How is he getting on with that now?" She asked.
"I think he's actually doing really well with it just now. I managed to take a peek at his laptop yesterday and I think I saw that he has a title now!" I couldn't hide my excitement for my friend.
"That's awesome! What is it? I promise I won't tell anyone!" She squeezed in the last sentence before I could even think of that.
"It looks like its called Notes from Last Night."
"Nice! I'd read that!" She beamed. Suddenly a worried thought crossed my mind.
"Oh you probably don't want to do that," I scoffed.
"Why not?"
Let's see. How do you put her off reading it without mentioning that there's a possibility she'd find out what you are really like by reading it.
"It'll probably just . . . suck?" Unsurprisingly, this statement was met with no reply. "Kidding!" I lied before laughing awkwardly.
Our next few conversations were a little strained after that but eventually things got back to normal.
"Oh I meant to ask you," She began, "Is it ok if my sister comes to the party on Saturday?"
"Uhhh" I gulped. "Uuuhh sure!"
She began laughing again before saying "Relax! I'm just joking; I just wanted to see your reaction. I will be telling her where I'm going but that's all," I smiled and nodded but was a little concerned. Why would she tell her sister that? Did she think that my apartment was some sort of rape den or something?
"Awesome!" Was all I could force myself to say.
We finished our drinks (and the water) and I agreed to walk her home. Once we reached her apartment door she turned to face me.
"Thank you for walking me home, David. And for a fun night."
"Oh it's my pleasure. I like seeing you," I internally cringed at what I was saying.
"I like seeing you too," She laughed, clearly enjoying my corny lines. "I'm looking forward to the party!"
"Yeah me too!" This was painful.
"Well . . . goodnight," She smiled awkwardly.
"Goodnight," I copied.
Despite saying our goodbyes, neither of us moved. We stared into each other's eyes for what felt like hours before I stepped into her and kissed her hard on the mouth. Instead of pulling away she pulled me closer into her (if that was at all possible) and reciprocated the kiss, wrapping her hands around my neck.
Finally she came up for air and said "Do you wanna come up for a little while?"
Instead of answering with words, I simply smiled and followed her inside and up to the second floor.
The gentleman in me wanted to tell her what a nice place she had but honestly, I didn't get a chance.
As soon as we were in the door, our lips locked once more before she pulled her shoes off without even untying them and dragged me towards the bedroom. I don't even remember where I'd abandoned my own shoes.
We got to the bedroom and I tried to kiss her again but it only lasted a few seconds before she shoved me back onto the bed and pulled her sweater over her head, revealing an incredible petite body as it fell to the floor.
"I was not expecting this tonight!" I smirked, unable to hide how happy I was.
"I can easily stop if you want me to?" She asked jokingly.
"Uh uh, no way! Come here."
Doing as I said, she grinned mischievously, her hair falling in front of her sultry eyes, before crawling on top of me.

Hello everyone!
This story has really been light on these authors notes, but that's because I often run out of things to say! But I feel like now is the perfect time for some directors commentary from me!
I'd love to hear what you guys think of this chapter, as its a pretty big deal! Are we happy that they finally hooked up? I thought it was about time that David got some ;) also, how weird is Joel man?
In all seriousness though, this chapter is the lead up to two of the greatest chapters (in my opinion) that I have ever written. I hope you're as excited as I am for this!
Don't forget to vote and comment with your thoughts. I'm looking forward to them!
