chapter twenty one
Sophia wants to leave this conversation as soon as possible. She can't look at her mom for one more second without wanting to scream her head off in frustration.
Sophia begins walking up the stairs. "Sophia! Where are you going?" Her mom asks.
"My room." She responds angrily as she continues her ascent up the stairs. Five minutes ago, Sophia would have done anything to be out of her room and doing something other than sitting in there all day. But suddenly, Sophia wants nothing more than to stay in her room from this moment on.
Sophia's mom apologizes for her daughter's behavior. She didn't expect her to react like that.
"It's okay." Holly smiles. "I knew this transition wouldn't be easy. I can just stay at a hotel for now if it's easier?"
"No, no. She will be fine. Please, stay. I want you here." She grabs Holly's hand and kisses it. "She will warm up to you. I promise."
Upstairs, Sophia slams her door shut, grabs her phone, and angrily texts Noah.
Sophia:
Guess what!
Noah:
Your mom is extending your punishment?
Sophia:
worse!
Noah:
Worse?!😱
What could be worse?
Sophia:
She's a lesbian!!
Noah:
Okay
I'm a little confused
What's so bad about that?
Sophia:
She asked her lesbian lover to move in with us!
Sophia slaps her phone down on her bed when her mother barges in the room. "What the hell Sophia? I didn't raise you to act like that in front of guests!"
"You didn't raise me to expect you to be a lesbian either!" Sophia argues. She doesn't know what else to say. She really wasn't expecting that kind of news. And she definitely was not expecting to have her move in too.
"Bisexual, Sophia. I am Bisexual." She corrects Sophia as she sits down on the bed with her.
"What does that even mean?!" Sophia slaps her hands down on her thighs.
"Well, it means I am attracted to both men and women." Sophia's Mom explains what bisexuality is to her.
"Well, whatever it is. It's not fair. You've been with Dad my whole life. Now all of the sudden you are with a woman? It's just confusing. I don't like it. I feel blindsided."
Sophia's Mom nods. "Okay." She understands that Sophia feels isolated in her own home now. "I didn't mean to blindside you. I just wanted to make sure that this was real before I brought her home."
"What was real? You liking girls?"
"No," Sophia's Mom laughs. "The relationship me and Holly have, honey, I should have told you sooner. I've known I was bisexual since high school."
"Is this part of my punishment?" Sophia drops her angry tone. She wants to say exactly what she is thinking.
"What?" Her Mom asks, unsure of what her daughter is asking her.
"Is you being- liking Holly- is this part of my punishment for fighting Ethan?" Sophia clarifies her question.
Sophia's Mom stands up and walks to the door. "Think of it however you want. I brought her home because I love her, not because I hate you."
Sophia can tell that her question really struck a nerve with her mom. It upset her deeply that Sophia would even ask such a think.
Sophia grabs her phone.
Noah:
Oh, I see. That's quite a situation you got there.
Anything I can do to help?
Sophia:
Well first you can help me figure out how to apologize to my mom for calling her girlfriend a punishment for me.
Noah:
😱
Sophia:
you sending that isn't helping...
What do I do?
Noah types for a while before sending his message to Sophia. He has quite a bit to say.
Noah:
You need to be honest with her. She might not like it but she should respect it. You have barely adjusted to life without your dad and now she's bringing a new person into the mix? It doesn't seem fair to me. But I've met your mom. I don't think she'd bring just anyone home. I think maybe this girl really is special.
Sophia sets the phone down and flops down on her bed. She knows she messed up and she doesn't know how to fix it.
