chapter seven
Bobby sits on his knees in the front seat and leans forward to be able to see over the hood of the car. Otherwise, he is too short to see what is in front of him on the road.
Bobby would swear they are going a hundred miles per hour even though Noah barely has his foot on the gas most of the time.
Both Noah and Sophia know that Bobby should not be sitting in the front seat. However, he is wearing his seat belt and Noah isn't going fast at all. Besides, they are just driving in circles around the neighborhood so he will be fine.
Sophia laughs as Bobby plays with the air conditioning controls up front. His attention seems to have shifted from the road to all of the different buttons Noah's car has. Bobby has unlimited toys in the front seat.
Sophia tears her attention away from Bobby and down to the phone in her lap. She reads over the text her mother just sent her, tears immediately forming in her eyes.
Noah looks up in the rear view mirror when he hears what he thinks is Sophia crying in the back seat. She quickly wipes her eyes clean of tears. She doesn't want Bobby to see her cry. She doesn't want him to know she is sad.
"What's wrong?" Noah asks, concerned about her. This is the second time she has cried in two days. He isn't sure how many times is normal for a girl to cry but he doesn't think it is natural for them to just start crying randomly like right now.
Sophia meets his eyes in the mirror, holding her phone tightly in her hands. "My dad just got released on bail." She replies, looking over at Bobby to see his reaction.
"Daddy is coming home?" Bobby asks, smiling when he hears the words.
Sophia shakes her head. She wishes she was as innocent as her bother. Her father hurt Bobby and yet, the six-year-old is still excited for him to come home.
She opens her mouth to ask to go back home but before she can, she points to an animal in the road. Noah looks back at the road and suddenly the animal Sophia is pointing at. He swerves to avoid hitting in, inadvertently slamming into a car swerving to avoid the animal as well.
Noah lets go of the steering wheel and stares at what just happened. He reverses the car a little bit and then parks the car. "I-" He is at a loss for words.
Sophia sits forward after she gets knocked into the seat. She checks on her brother and is able to relax a bit when she sees he is fine. He has been through enough emotional trauma recently. He doesn't need this right now.
Bobby sits silently in his seat, his eyes practically popping out of his head with fear. He has never been in an accident before.
Sophia unbuckles and gets out of the car. She needs to hug her brother.
The woman driving the other car exits her vehicle and immediately apologizes to the teenage boy as he gets out and does the exact same.
She places her hands on the boy's shoulders and shakes him softly, offering to pay for the damages. Noah refuses. He offers to pay for her damages.
While the two of them argue which one of them was at fault, Sophia assesses her little brother for wounds. He seems to be fine but she needs to make sure.
He stares at her without blinking as she checks his body for any bruises or cuts. Her mom would kill her if Bobby got hurt in this accident.
The two drivers assess the damages to both cars and decide that nothing is major enough to call the police to the scene or report to their insurance companies. Both cars have very minor damages that will not lower the safety or driving quality of the car.
Ethan, a witness to the aftermath of the accident, parks his car and rushes over to Sophia and her little brother. Noah sees him out of the corner of his eye as he talks to the other driver.
"Oh my god, Soph, Bob! Are you guys okay?" Ethan asks, kneeling down like Sophia is as she hugs her brother.
Sophia nods. It was a very minor accident. No one got hurt and neither car was damaged too badly. Everyone can move on from this.
"Do you need anything from me? Money? A ride-" Sophia stops Ethan and stands up.
"Actually, if you could take Bobby home, that would be great. Just- just tell my mom, um." Sophia searches for something to say to cover up the accident.
"I'll tell her you guys finished with your ride and Bobby wanted to show me his cars again." Ethan smiles, coming up with a story for her. Sophia thanks him and walks around the car to Noah as the other woman gets into her car and begins to leave the scene.
"Sophia, I don't know what to say, I'm- I'm so sorry." Noah pulls at his hair. "I should have-" Sophia throws her arms around him in a tight hug.
"I'm just glad you didn't kill the animal or any of us." She mumbles as she buries her face into his chest. Ethan watches from his car as the two of them share the warm embrace.
"Hey Bobby?" Ethan asks the little boy sitting in the back seat.
"Yeah?" He whispers.
"Do you want to come to my house for a little while?" Ethan puts the car into drive and begins moving slowly.
"Yeah!" The scared boy immediately brightens up.
