chapter four
Sophia wakes up and immediately checks her phone to see if Noah has texted her. Talking to him last night made the two of them much closer than they were before. She learned that she actually really likes talking to him. She types a response when she realizes that she left Noah hanging with his last question.
Noah:
Question 20...Why do you like Ethan?
Sophia:
We've been friends forever.
Noah:
That doesn't answer my question. Why do you like him? What about him makes him so desirable to you?
Sophia lifts her head out of her phone as if to look at something g for the answer. That is a really good question actually. She does not know how to answer it. She types a response and then deletes it.
She nearly jumps when she sees a familiar number pop up on her screen.
Her finger hovers over the screen as she tries to decide which button she wants to push. Her phone continues to buzz while she remains indecisive.
She clicks the green button and slowly raises the phone to her ear. "Sophia?" Her father asks, half amazed that she picked up even though he knew she would be the only one who would. She hasn't seen her father in just over a month and she misses him dearly, though she does hope she will never have to see him again after what he did.
She nods to reply. Realizing he isn't in the room with her, she clears her throat and speaks in a whisper. "Dad?" Her father smiles on the other end of the phone.
"I only get one phone call so I knew I needed to call you." Sophia nods as he speaks. She has mixed feelings about this phone call. "I missed hearing your voice."
She misses her father and is happy he called to talk to her with his one phone call but she is mad that he is daring to talk to her after what he has done. Sophia knows her mom would be extremely upset with her if she found out Sophia had answered his call. If she is being honest with herself, she is mad at herself for picking up too.
"Listen honey, I need you to send me some money." Her dad talks rapidly into the phone. He needs to say what he needs to say before his time runs out on this phone call.
"Money? F-for what?" She asks, playing with her hair. She always plays with her hair when she is nervous about something. Talking to her criminal dad is pretty nerve wracking for the teenager.
"Bail. I want to come home to you guys." Her father reveals his plan. Sophia nearly drops the phone when the words come out of his mouth. She doesn't know how the jail could let him come back to their house after what he has done to his family.
"Bobby still lives here." Sophia reminds him of what coming home is no longer a good idea. It just wouldn't be safe for anyone, including her father.
"I know sweetie. But I am better now. Please send money. I need the money to get out of here." Her father begs his teenage daughter through the phone. He hates jail. He wants to get out as fast as he can and wait in the comfort of his home for his court date.
"Is that the only reason you called me?" Sophia asks, her voice shaking as her body threatens to make her cry. "Because you need money?"
"Well-" Sophia does not even wait for her dad to finish what he was going to say. She hangs up and throws the phone to the end of her bed.
She thinks she is stupid for actually believing he missed her and just wanted to hear her voice. He only called her because he knew she would be the most likely to help him out of everyone he knows.
Sophia breaks down in tears. She can't believe she answered and allowed him to emotionally abuse her like that. She thought he actually wanted to talk to his daughter because he loves her. Clearly, he doesn't love her enough to even ask how she is doing while he has been in jail.
Sophia sees her phone light up with a message from someone with a little yellow emoji next to their name. She crawls to the end of her bed and grabs it, typing a response to the patient boy.
Sophia:
I can't do this I'm sorry.
Within seconds, Sophia's phone is lighting up with a phone call from Noah. He is too worried about her last comment to leave her be. He wants to make sure she is okay.
Sophia stares at the call and denies it. She doesn't want to talk to him. Noah sees the call was denied and it only fuels the fire underneath him even more. Now he is even more worried about her wellbeing. He dials her number again and will repeat the process until she answers.
Sophia screams into her pillow when she sees his name pop up again. She sets the pillow down in her lap and grabs her phone. "You better have a g-good reason for calling me right n-now." Sophia does her best to hide the fact that she is crying from Noah.
"Oh shit. Are you crying?" Noah asks. He didn't realize he upset her this badly with his simple question. "Was it something I said? I promise I won't bring Ethan up anymore if it makes you this upset. I'm sorry."
Sophia holds her hand over her mouth and clenches her eyes shut, trying to force herself to stop crying. She remembers how worried she got last night with every text Noah sent. She was worried he was going to ask about her father.
Every other kid in school is curious to know exactly what got him arrested. She figured the text game last night was just a clever way to ask her about him. But Noah never asked. He stayed far away from that topic, knowing it might be touchy for her.
"It's not you Noah. Thank you for your concern. I'll see you at school on Monday." Sophia says after she is able to stop her crying long enough to form a few coherent sentences.
Noah pulls the phone away from his ear and stares at his home screen. She hung up. He sets the phone down and tries to think about what he can do to make it better.
AN: what do you think Sophia's father did?
