chapter fifteen

Sophia walks into her high school and immediately feels all eyes on her. Sophia feels like everyone is staring at her. Of course, she tells herself that she is just overreacting. She is just being hyper anxious due to her return to school in the middle of the week scared a traumatic weekend.

She continues through the hallways to her first class. She stops at her locker to grab a few things before starting her school day.

Beside her, two girls whispers and point at Sophia. She sees them out of the corner of her eyes. She knows they are talking about her and she doesn't like it. She quickly closes her locker and rushes away.

"Sophia!" Noah calls out for her. She briefly debates hiding from him but ultimately decides she could use a bit of his positive energy right now. She leans against a locker to wait for him to catch up to her. "Good morning." Noah smiles as he walks beside her.

Sophia grabs onto the straps of her backpack as she walks. Noah strikes up a conversation with her and begins his concern with her well being when she fails to answer him.

Sophia has a hard time focusing on anything other than the voices she hears around her. They are all talking about her. She is sure of it. She can hear her name. She hears their voices call out for her.

"Sophia?" Noah waves his hand in front of her face to get her attention. Sophia raises her head to look at him. He is worried about her. He had an entire conversation with her and she didn't say one word.

"I- I need to go." Sophia speaks hurriedly, turning around in the crowded hallways.

"Where are you going?" Noah asks, stopping dead in the hallways. Annoyed teenagers groan as they find their way around him.

"I'm," Sophia looks around. "Bathroom. The bathroom." She repeats herself as if to convince him of her destination. Noah nods.

"Should I wait for you?" He pushes against the crowd to get to Sophia. She shakes her head.

"I'll see you in class." She shouts to him across the hall, leaving him confused and worried. He has no idea what he did. He doesn't know that she is having a panic attack. It is not his fault this is happening to her. She just needs to work through it.

Sophia feels like she is losing her mind. She isn't even sure if these people are actually talking about her or if her mind is making her believe that they are. She rushes to the bathroom and clings onto one of the sinks as she tries to calm her breathing and slow her heart down. She just needs a minute to breathe.

A cheerleader comes out of the bathroom stall and spots the obviously anxious Sophia splashing some cold water onto her face. "Trying to wash away the shame you have from sleeping with your daddy?" She asks. "Keep scrubbing darling. It's going to take a while." The girl leaves the bathroom laughing as she texts in the cheer leader group chat about that great joke she just came up with.

Sophia shakes her head and rushes into a stall. She slams the door shut and locks it. She is going to keep herself locked in here even though classes have already started and they will know she is missing. She doesn't want to be seen by anyone else.

Sophia sits down on the sticky ground and wonders how things could have gotten to this point. She has no idea how everyone at school knows what happened. She didn't tell anyone.

Except Noah.

Sophia pulls out her phone to message him. She has some very angry words to share with him because he shared her secret.

Sophia:
Bathroom by the main entrance. Now.

Noah:
In class.

Sophia:
NOW.

Noah widens his eyes as he peers under his desk to peek at his phone. One day into the relationship and she's already mad at him. He is scared of what she is going to say.

He signs himself out for the bathroom and takes the hall pass so that he can secretly meet up with Sophia. He sees her pacing in front of the bathroom doors.

"Sophia." Noah calls out to get her attention. She looks up and sees him approaching her with a smile on his face. She thinks he is great at hiding his guilt with a smile.

"Why?" She asks simply, waiting for him to explain himself. She wants to give him the chance to confess before she accuses him.

"Why what?" He asks, wondering how she expects him to know what she is thinking.

"Why did you tell everyone about my dad?" Sophia fights the urge to punch Noah. She can't believe he told people what she told him in secrecy.

Noah shakes his head. "I didn't- Sophia I promised I never would. I didn't tell anyone."

"It had to have been you Noah. You are the only person I told." Sophia explains her reasoning behind the accusation.

"Sophia! You have to believe me! It really wasn't me. I didn't say anything." Noah tries to protect himself. Sophia wants to believe him but she can't. He is the only person she told. No one else knew about anything to do with her dad except for him.

Sophia clenches her fists at her side. "I don't believe you." Sophia says simply. She doesn't know why she trusted him in the first place.

Noah nods. "I'm going to go back to class now. When you are ready to listen, let me know. I want to explain that it wasn't me. Maybe I can find a way to convince you of the truth." Noah finishes his thought and returns to his class, feeling defeated.
