Chapter 33
Austin was released from the hospital the next evening. The toxin reports came back negative and he was good to go. It wasn't that deep of a cut, but it could have been so much worse and it still needed about fifteen stitches.
I took him back to his place, he seemed almost relieved to be back home. I don't think either of us really wanted to go back to the cabin. Neither of us were quite sure if it was safe. It seemed pretty well hidden, but if a crazy person could find it, anyone could.
Austin flopped on his bed and let out a deep sigh. Then he gave a wince, I guess he was a little more hurt than he was letting on. "It's great to be back home, don't ya think?" He asked with a small smile on his face. He was trying to pretend like he wasn't in pain, but I knew better.
I sat down on the edge of his bed, "You sure you're doing ok? Not shaken up at all?" I knew I was, but he didn't need to know that.
"Yes, I'm ok and it's safe here. There are plenty of people in this house and if someone broke in they'd have to get past about a hundred people and be able to get to the second floor without getting caught. I think we'll be ok." He gave me a reassuring smile, but that wasn't what I was worried about.
"You sure it's still safe?" I asked. This time he knew exactly what I meant.
"Well, yes, he is basically not allowed within a mile of the house. My people down stairs are taking really good care of it. I need to send them all a giant thank you gift for that. I know how difficult he can be."
"Since you kind of kicked him out, where is he living?" So Alex may have been a monster, but no beast should be homeless. Unless they actually want it that way, plus he did seem somewhat concerned when I saw him at the hospital.
"I set up a bedroom area in the shed out back. It's nicer than you would think. He still gets to leave whenever he wants which I have been trying to avoid, every morning I have someone put breakfast in there and every night he is given dinner. Since I want him to be punished for what he has done, he doesn't get lunch from me."
"Wow, what a big punishment." I said, only half joking.
"I mean, he's a terrible person, but we are still family, I guess." He just shrugged and stared at a picture of his family that was on his desk.
"Yea, I think I know something like that." I looked out his window. The view here was much like the view from the top of the cliff, you could see the whole town from here.
"I didn't mean to complain. I know your situation is a lot worse. By the way, I don't know if now is a good time to ask, but you never did tell me about your father." Why did he have to bring this up now?
"Let's just say he was an abusive alcoholic and leave the rest of the conversation for another night. Tonight is just for me and you." I kissed him to distract him from what I had just said.
He laughed, "Thanks for that, now I'm feeling much better." My distraction seemed to work.
"Right, I guess I'll save it for tonight." I smiled and stuck my tongue out at him in a jokingly manner.
"Well then, I can't wait." He gave me a sly smile. "Are you ready for a good night?"
"Of course, what do you have planned?"
"Movie night." We slowly made our way into his theater room and put on a movie. Neither of us was really watching though; we were too busy talking. Normally I'm the type of girl who prefers movies over the people sitting next to me, but he was just stabbed and I wanted to know about his last concert.
The movie was coming to an end and I was getting pretty tired, so I sat up and yawned. Austin tried to kiss me, but I held my finger to his lips and he opened his eyes too. "It's getting late, maybe we should go to bed."
"Five more minutes?" he smiled and put on his big puppy dog eyes.
"I have to get up early and check in on Soph, I haven't really told her about what happened yet. We should go to bed."
"Okay, fine. Do you need pajamas?"
"Maybe a top."
"I got that covered." He struggled to his room. I felt the need to help him, but he made me sit. He came back with one of his shirts. "How about this?" It was an ugly salmon color, but I didn't really care. I couldn't let him get away with making me wear something like that without making a snarky comment though.
"That might be the manliest shirt I've ever seen." We both laughed.
"I know right. This is what happens when you stick a white T-shirt with the red laundry." That time, I laughed. I threw on the shirt, but stayed in the shorts that the hospital had let me 'borrow'. I didn't want him to get any ideas.
"Do you have a guest room?"
He smiled again, "I do, but since you are so tired my room is much closer. Plus, you'd probably get lost trying to find the room anyway."
I knew what he was hinting at, but I played along, "Oh, do you have a couch in there that you would be sleeping on?"
"Nope, just one bed." I gave him a look and he tried to say, "but it is a really big bed and I could totally sleep on the couch if you would prefer." He messed with his hair. It was his nervous tick.
"It's okay, I can share." I gave him a peck on the cheek before heading to his room and throwing on the covers. He was not far behind. He lay down next to me and put his arm around me. I could tell that even the slightest movement hurt his side, but I didn't want to embarrass him by being overly cautious about it.
"Good night, Em. Love you." Austin whispered in my ear.
"Love you too." And with that, we both fell asleep.
