Chapter 31
As I was trying to fall asleep in our new cabin, the wind started to pick up. The windows rattled and a tree branch continuously banged on the window to a rhythmic beat. I pulled the covers over my head as I tried my best to drift off to sleep. The wind blew the door open and there was a crash. A lamp probably just blew over and broke. I felt something on my arm. I threw off the covers and saw a person standing over me. The figure put their hand over my mouth as I tried to scream.
"Shh, Em, it's just me," Austin whispered, "There's someone in the house, go hide in the bathroom now." He looked frantic and I saw the whites of his eyes. I couldn't move. "Go! Now!" he hissed. That got me out of bed.
I ran to the bathroom and closed the door as quietly as I could. I locked the door behind me and climbed into the tub. I closed the curtains and lay as still as possible. I heard nothing for a long time. Then I heard something bang against the table as another lamp shattered on the floor. I had to stifle a scream as I jumped at a loud noise in the kitchen. It sounded like nails against a chalkboard, or a blade on the marble countertop. Then I heard a scream that was full of pain and panic. It was Austin.
I couldn't help it, I jumped out of the tub and threw open the door. I turned on the lights and ran to the kitchen. The door slammed shut as the hooded figure ran out. I took in the sight. There was broken glass everywhere and the table was sideways leaning against the cabin wall. The worst part was that Austin was laying on the floor. A puddle of red growing across his chest. I picked up the phone and dialed 9-1-1. I heard Austin groan.
"Emily, is he gone? Are you okay?" He was always so concerned about me. Even when he might be dying. I went to his side.
"I'm the one who should be asking you that question." A tear ran down my cheek. I was sure he was badly hurt, but I didn't know how much. "What happened, are you okay?"
"It's just a flesh wound." His laughed turned into a cough. I examined the injury. Someone had definitely taken a knife to his chest. It wasn't too deep and I knew he would be ok. I took a deep breath of relief. "How bad is it?" He asked.
"I think you'll be okay, it is just a flesh wound." My laugh was forced, but it seemed to ease his pain a bit. I heard an ambulance off in the distance. I knew they were for him. He was going to be just fine.
