Chapter 21
The limo driver dropped Sophie off and then me. It was about one in the morning when we finally arrived at my house. He helped me out of the car and then presented his hand. I didn't know what he wanted so I just gave him a high-five. It didn't look like that's what he was looking for.
I went to the front step of my house and opened the door. It was left unlocked. "Mom? Sandra?" I got no reply, but I heard a crash in the kitchen. I ran to check it out. I threw open the door.
"Oh good, Christine it's you. There is a burglar in our dorm!" She was throwing things at Sandra as she hid behind the counter. Sandra mouthed 'help me' as she held her hands to her head.
Crap. Mom thought I was her roommate from her college days. "It's okay, M...Jessica. I guess I forgot to tell you that my friend Sandra was coming over to visit. She's training to be a nurse at another college." This has never happened in our house before. I guess it was because Sandra was there.
Sandra came out from her hiding spot, "I guess I forgot to knock. It's my fault." I let out a sigh, she was playing along. I owed her so much for this.
"It's okay. Any friend of Christine's is a friend of mine! I'm sorry for throwing things at you, would you like to have a late night snack?" Her mood immediately changed, as if controlled by a snap, and started searching for snacks.
"I think I'm okay, but maybe we should go to bed." Sandra suggested.
"That's a good idea," I looked at Sandra and she nodded softly, "Jessica, how about we grab something to eat and then we go to bed. We have exams early tomorrow and we want to be well rested." she usually responded well to this.
"Okay. I'll meet you in our room. Do you want to show Sandra to the couch?" She was always quite the host.
"Will do, have a good night." I tried to rush her upstairs.
"Nice to meet you, Jessica." Sandra added as my mom headed up to bed.
"You too Sandra."
I then escorted Sandra out of the kitchen and into the living room. "You didn't warn me about what to do if she started throwing things. I haven't gotten to that part of my training yet." She gave a nervous chuckle and tried to hide her hands behind her back. She was clearly shaken.
"I'm sorry, but this has never happened before in the house. I thought you would be okay. Normally the pictures remind her about the year and who she is." My mom was starting to worry me.
"You really need to get help. It seems to be getting worse."
"I'll try to as soon as possible."
She started out the door, "Oh, also have you noticed her speech lately? She seemed to be slurring her words while we were having lunch."
"Maybe it was because she was eating?" I was hoping for the best.
"That's what I thought at first, but it continued for about an hour before she stopped. You might want to get a second opinion, because I don't think that this is a symptom of Alzheimer's." How could she possibly know this?
"Are you suggesting that it isn't Alzheimer's?"
"I don't know, Em. I just know that if I were you I'd talk to her doctors as soon as possible." Now she was really worrying me.
"Okay, thanks." She started to walk towards the driveway, "I got a poster signed for you, by the way." I had a dazed look on my face. If it isn't Alzheimer's what could it be? Could I have been making it worse?
"Thanks, Em. And just hang in there." She gave me a short tight hug before heading out the door. "Call me if you need anything, Okay?"
"Okay." I then closed the door then slowly headed up the stairs towards my mom's room. I heard the door shut and was hoping that she was asleep. Luckily she was. I opened her door and sat on the end of her bed. I held her hand, "We are going to get through this, Mom. I need you." I said goodnight before heading over to my room. I didn't know how I was going to sleep, but I did know that I was going to take her to the doctor first thing the next morning.
