chapter twenty

[Third person p.o,v, Damian is still in his robin costume just as everyone is all still in their masks, aside from Danica. this is mostly in Damians p.ov though] I'm also running out of some motivation for this story, so leaving comments is a really good way to help me prevent some of my writers block. This chapter also leaves a bunch of unanswered questions, which will be answered in the next two or three chapters. So if you're confused, that's perfectly fine and normal.

"Oh mother, tell your children not to do what I have done. Spend your lives in sin and misery, in the house of the rising sun."

This had been going on for a while. When Danica wasn't muttering absolutely nothing in nonsense to herself she was mumbling the lyrics to one song over and over again to herself, hunched over with her knees pulled to her chest and er face hidden to the ground. Damian found it quite annoying, in all honesty.

He'd heard the song before and was slightly fond of it, but listening to Danica repeat it like it's the only thing she truly knows is annoying. Whenever she wasn't, though. She would say how sorry she was to her mother, about how wrong she is and how she feels so terribly sorry for what she's doing. Whoever Danica's mother is, Damian knows one thing for sure, and that he pities the woman.

Sometimes Danica would pull on her hair and start screaming, in which case she'd eventually throw herself against the class walls surrounding the cell that kept her secure and away from the rest of the cave. He was convinced she was crazy, or that she had gotten a whiff of Joker gas herself.

"Mother, I'm sorry. I am so sorry. I'm terribly sorry I couldn't do anything. Father was right, he's always right." She muttered to herself, Danica was now chewing at her nails to the point the tips of her fingers were bleeding. Bruce couldn't do anything, nobody ws able to go into the cell without getting hurt. Dick was sent in to tend to Danica's wounds, assuming she was asleep. But she got up and attacked him, leaving it to Jason to yank Dick out of the cell.

Damian felt very strange around her, like he wasn't safe. It's because she was unpredictable. Sometimes she would space out like she was remembering something, even though she was. Damian didn't know that. An then a moment later she would be cool, calm, and collected. As if nothing was wrong. She'd go back to being her non-expression like self. Not a smile, not a cringe, nothing like that. Then sometimes, she would be so arrogant it bothered him. Like it rivaled Jason's arrogance, like it rivaled Damian's arrogance. Like it rivaled both of their arrogance combined. Other moments, and this was with you it seemed, whenever this happened. She would be happy. She would talk about her mother as if she just saw the woman not even five minutes ago, she would laugh at nothing, and not in the creepy way like the Joker does. She would smile, she would giggle and she would do so much.

Everything about her was strange, the way she looked similar to you. The way she seemed to have bits of Damian's own personality, almost like she's known Damian for years and tried to imitate him just to get under his skin. Just to annoy him, it seemed. There's no other possible explanation.

But there was one thing she said every here and there that made Bruce think about possibly contacting a...''friend''.

She would sometimes mention to herself about a boy named Bart, leaving no last name. But she would mention how this was his fault for not informing her about the way her memories would catch up to her. IT was only when she screamed out a last name in anger that everyone figured out who she was talking about, Bart Allen. By Allen, Bruce assumed the boy that Danica spoke of was connected to Berry somehow, as in the flash. And everyone knows one of the Flash's abilities.

Things weren't adding up especially when Ben turned himself in to GCPD when it was put out on the news that he was wanted. He st in another cell near by Danica, but he kept his mouth shut and bounced a ball off of the glass wall to make the time pass by less slowly. Every now and then he would hum the words of House of the rising sun to himself whenever Danica mumbled the words. IT seemed like a personal thing between the two. It seemed almost religious, to say it sarcastically.

"One foot on the platform, the other's on the train." Danica muttered to herself, sitting back down in the corner of the glass cell and hiding her face in humiliation. She seemed to feel so vulnerable. Nothing could hide it.

A couple years back, when Bruce was locked into one of these own cells by Jason, after the incident he installed a lock from the inside. It would unlock whenever he stood in front of it and demanded for a retina scan. It was something only people related to him could access, since for some reason he couldn't limit it only to himself. Something was wrong with the wiring, and since it was something new and last second? So far, only Damian and he could access it. But Bruce is the only person who knows that it exists, for obvious reasons.

Everyone failed to notice your wide eyes directed to the shaking girl in the glass cell, that song. It was something important to you, and Danica was singing, or more so mumbling the words of it to herself to keep calm.

Damian sat in a chair at the foot of the hospital bed in the cave, the one in which you laid. You were hooked up to all sorta of needles and wires. By now your skin had gone back to it's natural color, and the red marks around your mouth that imitated a smile were gone. The antidote has been made from your blood stream and has been sent to every hospital in Gotham for those infected with the Jokers newest toxin. Esentially, it replicates his own mental illness's. Over time, that is. So you'd have to be infected with it for about a month before someone, so to speak, actually becomes similar to the joker. The rashes around the mouth were there to keep the infected person scratching at their mouth to the point they'd take a knife and cut it open, to get rid of the itchy feeling it gave. You started to beg for it in your sleep, for someone to rip open your mouth just so you could stop feeling that tedious pain.

Bu the fact that Danica was singing that song, really drove you crazy. Not like the Joker, crazy. But more so like annoyed, and confused crazy. Not so much crazy as those two feelings were amplified.

"She's saying it just like my mother would. Shes emphasizing certain words." You mumbled, listening closely to how she said certain things. This caught Damian's undivided attention, narrowing his eyes on you beneath the green domino mask.

"What?" He asked, watching as you sat up in the small and uncomfortable bed, it wasn't even really a bed, really. He moved himself over to you quickly, eyes wide as he placed a hand behind your head to support you. He knew that you wouldn't be able to move very well, so he helped you. While watching this, Bruce couldn't help but let the small and very faint smile grace his features for just a split moment. Jason saw this and rolled his eyes, but was sure to copy the action later on.

"My second mom, the second set of parents I had that adopted me. Marissa, she would sing that to me as a lullaby, sorta, when I went to bed and didn't wanna turn the light off because I was scared. She didn't like traditional things to lull me to sleep with, so she chose her favorite song and made it sound sweeter. It kinda stuck with me because I listen to it whenever I'm in a mood." You shrugged your shoulders. "It wasn't the same, because it wasn't really the same way my mom sang it to me. But it was good enough. But she's saying it exactly like my mom said it." You added, eyes narrowed into a glare at the girl who rocked to herself back and forth behind the glass.

"An' it wasn't a cover or anything, she came up with it on her own. That's why it was so special to me."Bruce and Jason also caught hearing of what it was you were saying, Dick was in the other side of the cave, and both lacking parents could understand why this pissed you off. But Damian, who had both of his parents, only just barely understood why it bothered you. But he got the gist of it.

"Did she have any other kids-"
"No, I was an only child." You quickly cut him off with a glare and your sharp tongue. He knew not to press any further since it seemed like a sensitive topic, but at the same time
he didn't give a damn because he needed answer just as much s Bruce did to the question why she was wearing a Robin suit.

All excitement about being in the batcave was gone from you, it was only probably real for about a minute before you came to the sudden realization that you were in pain, and what you thought at first, was your mothers voice. It scared you awake, really. In a way, you never noticed this until now, but..she kinda, in a way did sorta sound like your mother. It was the way she was soft spoken every here and there.

"Brother, Brother why have you killed us all?" Danicas incoherant mumblings and mutters were getting louder, and toned with more fear. All the random things she would say would catch Ben's attention, and he would cringe every now and then only to have the look on his face replaced by one of an upset child that refused to accept the truth.

"This is unfair, I don't deserve this. I just want to be happy!" She screamed, this gained everyone's attention, even Tim who had tried to ignore all of this madness. Danica got up and threw her blood stained hands against the glass, leaving bloody hand prints due to her bleeding fingers that let blood cover her entire hands.

"What the hell?" You mumbled, watching as Danica kept throwing her hands against the glass and kept slamming the side of her body to break it. Damian reassured you that she couldn't get out.

"Computer, allow retina scan."

Bruce dropped his glass tea cup that Alfred had handed him not even an hour ago, his eyes widened as he watched the bright blue lights scan over Danicas left eye and actually allow access for the glass door to slide open.

Danica was related to Bruce by blood. somehow, someway. But she was a Wayne. This is the reason why she didn't give you her last name. Danica Gray Wayne.

"My time is running out, I've giving up trying to pretend to be crazy because now I know you won't do anything of it. Won't come in here to try and speak to me, but I am done. I'm tired of paying games, my point needs to be made." She yelled, stomping her way towards you. Jason was the first to act, moving himself in front of Danica, and behind Jason was Dick. Tim followed suit, and stood behind Dick as Bruce watched from where he sat in the large computer chair, unable to process what was going on. Danica was related to him somehow? He's never seen this kid in his entire life.

Danica seemed to know so much more than she was letting on, and she was angry. Ben stood in his cell when she did this with handfuls of white hair bunched up in his hands out of anger as he tried to yell to get her to stop. Pounding on the glass to get her to shut up, but she refused to even turn around and look at him. She was truly past her breaking point.

Danica didn't see a need to continue walking, instead she opened her mouth to speak.

"My parents gave me my middle name a shortened version. Because Grayson sounded too stupid to be a middle name, and too long. So it was shortened to Gray. And this?" She yelled, the fact that she spewed from her mouth made Dick raise an eyebrow in confusion. Why would he be partly named after him? To everybody, Danica didn't exist until recently.

She pulled out chess piece, a king. A white king. It had teeth marks on it, from a child. They were baby teeth, almost like a teething baby had taken the piece and chewed on it.

"Bruce Wayne, isn't this familiar to you?" Danica said, and the moment the name Bruce Wayne caught your ears, everything was starting to fit into place. Everything. IF Batman was Bruce Wayne, then Robin..

"Damian?" You mumbled, swatting at the air in front of the boy in Robins suit. A sharp gasp was let out of your mouth as your eyes widened in shock, your body felt cold as you remembered every little thing you've ever aid to Robin, remembered every little meeting you've had with Robin. That entire time, it was Damian?

"Oh my god." You whispered to yourself, reaching up to his face and ripping the green domino mask away.

"What have you done?" Was the last thing you heard before you fainted, the words didn't come from Damian, but they came from Bruce, and they were directed towards Danica.

One thing that everyone filed to notice was how often Danica was mentioning the fact that she was running out of time. How important it was to her that she stays on her own schedule, And that was their mistake for not thinking it very important yet.
