Chapter 59
Arriving on Phillip Island, Darshan stood at the bus stop, confused as what to do next. He pulled up a picture of Jaimi on his phone and walked across the street to the small grocery store to inquire. He bumped into an elderly man while entering the store causing the groceries to fall out of the bag.
Darshan: I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to-
Darshan starts picking up the bread, vegetables, and fruits. He bags them and hands it to the man who looks to be in his early sixties.
Darshan: Once again, I'm really sorry, sir.
Man: That's fine, but don't run around.
The man saw Jaimi's picture on his screen.
Man: How do you know her?
Darshan follows his line of vision that landed on his phone.
Darshan: Oh, uh- she she's my- friend. Do you know her?
Man: Yeah. She's a darling!
The man says with adoration in his voice and eyes. Darshan smiles.
Darshan: Can you take me to her? I lost her address.
Man: Come on, follow me!
Darshan: Let me help you with those bags.
Darshan grabs a few bags in one hand and his luggage bag in the other. They walk for roughly twenty minutes before reaching a small house. They drop the groceries at the cottage and the man introduces Darshan to his wife.
Man: This is Isabelle, my wife.
Darshan: Hello ma'am! I'm Darshan.
Isabella: Nice to meet you, young man. You can call me Belle! Thank you for helping Richard with the bags.
Darshan: It was my pleasure.
Richard: Where is Luke?
Isabella: With Julie!
Richard: This young man also came to meet her. I'll show him to Julie's place.
Darshan is confused by the name, but doesn't give much thought to it.
Darshan: It was nice to meet you Belle.
Darshan gives her his charming smile and she returns it with a pleasant one and a small wave. Richard and Darshan walk five minutes over a hill until they reach a fenced garden with a small country cottage towards the back of the property. They walk towards the sound of giggles coming from behind the trees that are planted alongside the fence.
Darshan walks towards it and his heart catches a pace hearing the familiar sound. He sees a female whose back is facing him. She is wearing a white dress that reaches her knees. Her long black hair cascades down her back in soft wave. She is blowing bubbles while a young boy about four year old tries to catch them.
Richard: Luke!
Luke and the girl turn to face them. Darshan's heart feels like it will jump out of his chest looking at Jaimi. Her eyes fall on Darshan, but she is too stunned to react. He drops his luggage and runs to her. He embraces her in a tight hug and closes his eyes, cherishing the moment. He pulls back after a few moments and cups her face in one hand while the other is wrapped around her waist.
Darshan: Little warrior.
She smiles at him.
Luke: But she's not little warrior!
Jaimi and Darshan burst out into laughing hearing his innocent child-like voice. They separate from one another. Richard and Luke start towards their house.
Luke: Bye Julie!
Jaimi: Bye Luke!
She waves at him as they walk away. He looks at her and embraces her in a hug, missing her warmth.
Darshan: Why would you leave me like that? Three month, Jay?
Jaimi: I needed it, Raval.
They pull away after a few minutes as the sun starts to shine down on them. Darshan grabs his luggage as Jaimi leads him towards the small cottage with white stone exterior and black roof. There are two steps leading a small patio that has a swing.
Darshan is pleasantly surprised at the interior of the house. It has a modern farmhouse vibe that looks clean and chic. He looks around to see the papers littered around the seating, dining, and the kitchen island.
Jaimi: Go freshen up! The main bathroom is on the top floor.
Darshan takes the floating wooden stairs up to the first floor which has a canopy bed in the middle. There is a long white cloth draped over the canopy for decorative purposes. On the left, are two sliding barn style glass doors with black grid. He walks through and finds a spare toothbrush and towel under the sink. He brushes his teeth and showers. He changes into a fresh pair of clothes and walks down.
He sees the papers have been collected and placed neatly on the coffee table in the living room. Jaimi is in kitchen making pancakes. He walks over to her and absorbs his surroundings. She serves him chocolate chip pancakes with maple syrup and puts away the dishes while he settles down with his food. She also has a few bites while cleaning the kitchen. There is thick tension in the air, but neither are willing to acknowledge it. Jaimi cleans up while Darshan finishes his brunch.
Jaimi: You should sleep off your jet lag. You must be tired.
Darshan: Is there another bedroom?
Jaimi: No. Just take mine.
Darshan nods and makes his way to the top and lays down. He falls asleep in the matter of minutes. Jaimi sits in the living room working on the designs and financials.
Darshan wakes up around 6 in the evening to the ringing of his phone. He answers the call and chats for a minute or two before freshening up and putting on a t-shirt. He walks downstairs to see the house empty. He looks out the glass windows to see the sky changing colors for sunset. He walks outside and walks around the property, but doesn't see Jaimi. He walks towards the cliff and takes the stairs down to the beach.
He sees Jaimi swimming in the ocean and sighs in relief. She walks out running her fingers through her hair to get rid of the excess water. Darshan's mouth falls open seeing her in a black one shoulder cutout swimsuit. He walks towards her and see her drying her hair off with the towel. He walks towards her and sees a group of men looking at her from afar. He takes off his t-shirt and hands it to her. Jaimi is confused for a second, but one look to her right and she puts on the t-shirt.
Jaimi: Tum soe nahi?
Darshan: Need puri ho gayi par tum mujhe batae bina kyu chali gae? Tumhe pata hain ki mein kitna darr gaya tha?
Jaimi: I'm sorry.
Jaimi sees the sincerity and fear in his eyes, but pushes aside her emotions. She sits down on the sand to watch the sunset. Darshan sits beside her and glances at her every few minutes as if confirming that it is reality. As the sky turns black, they both get up and go to the house. Jaimi heats up the spaghetti that she made earlier and they have it for dinner. She showers and changes into her pajamas before sitting in the living room with her laptop and the papers. Darshan joins her after ending his conversation with Jyugal and turns on the tv. There's a period of silence between them as Jaimi focuses on her work while Darshan thinks about a way of approaching her.
Darshan: Tum wapas kab aaogi?
Jaimi: Not anytime soon.
Darshan: Why?
Jaimi: Because this is my comfort zone.
Darshan: Tumne kisi ko contact kyu nahi kiya?
Jaimi: Kiya! Meri Dad, Dada, Aarush, aur Bua se baat hoti hain.
Darshan: I mean Ayesha ya phir mujhe?
Jaimi: I trying to avoid dragging you, Ayesha, or anyone into my life. It's better to keep a safe distance.
Darshan: Jay? Hum se bhi puchlo!
Jaimi: Raval, tum ya phir koi bhi meri situation nahi samjh sakhte! Tumne jo dekha Wilson mein woh promo tak nahi tha meri life ka. Meine apni puri life chupte chupate guzaari hain living in fear ki kisi ne dekh liya toh? Kuch hua toh? Meine meri family ko khoon se cover dekha hain. Mere saamne unko dead announce kiya tha. Wilson mein tumne jo dekha woh meri life hain! Mein as Jaimi Patel, khud se khaana bhi nahi khaa sakhti kyu ki kisi ko mera khaana taste karna padta hain. I have to always think about ki poison hua toh meri wajah se kisi ka jaan jaa sakhti hain! Yeh royalty aur business jitna accha dikhta hain utna accha nahi hain. Bachpan se hume kaha jaata hain ki kaise baithna, kaise khaana, kya khaana, kaise chalna, kya pehen na hain, kaise smile karni hain, kaise logo se interact karna hain, sab kuch I mean sab kuch koi aur control karta hain.
Darshan: Yeh royal protocols are old, Little Warrior! India mein aur bhi royal families hain.
Jaimi: They are acting royals and I am a ruling royal. There's a difference! Mein apni puri life iss darr mein nahi kaat sakhti. This is my safe place.
Darshan: What can I do to convince you?
Jaimi: Nothing.
Jaimi turns back to her work and Darshan watches TV. This continues for the next few days. Jaimi and Darshan explore the island and the surrounding cities.
One night, Darshan and Jaimi are sleeping in the bed with a cushion wall in between them as usual. He wakes up in the middle of the night to see Jaimi missing. He knocks on the bathroom door, but doesn't get a answer. He walks into see it empty and proceeds to check the rest of the house. He walks around the yard, but still doesn't find her. His heart sinks to the bottom as sweat trickles down his forehead. He decides to walk down the steps leading to the beach.
He reaches the bottom of the stairs and turns on the flashlight. He sees the shadow of an individual sitting where the waves are crashing. Second by second the frequency and height of the waves increase and the person starts to submerge in water. He runs towards the individual and pulls them away to see its Jaimi. He embraces her in a bone-crushing hug as her body is cold to touch.
Darshan: Jay? Baby?
He shakes her, but she doesn't respond to his voice or touch. He picks her up in his arms and carries her up the stairs. He places her in the bathtub and turns on hot water and lets it hit her ice cold skin. She is still like a statue not even making a slightest movement. He turns on the heat in the house and lets the water run until her skin feels slightly warm. He drains the water and pulls her into his arms to help her up. Her face is against his and he feels her tears as they stream down her face.
Darshan: Jay? Love? Kya hua?
She says it in a tone barely above a whisper, but he is able to hear is due to their proximity.
Jaimi: I killed someone.
