Chapter 54
The next day, the 28th of August, Jaimi and Aarush are discharged from the hospital. Jaimi and Aarush stayed in their room and mainly kept to themselves the whole day. Darshan can sense the tension in the dining room when Ved and Daksha walk in.
Late night, Darshan walks to the waterbody in the garden. He sees a shadow. He looks up to see Jaimi sitting at the edge of the pool with her back against a column. He takes a seat by her. She looks away from the reflection of the moon on the water. He sees a bottle of Heineken beer in her hand as usual.
Darshan: Jay? You ok?
Jaimi nods.
Darshan: Are you in pain?
Jaimi: Dard ki toh aadat ho gae hain!
Darshan: Do you want to talk about it?
Jaimi: I'm good.
There's a minute of silence.
Jaimi: Wanna drink?
Darshan: I'm good. I don't drink!
Jaimi: That's good. You shouldn't!
Darshan: Then, why are you drinking?
Jaimi: Tanhai aur dard sehne mein thodi madad karti hain.
Darshan: Sharab ke alawa bhi options hain.
Jaimi: Like?
Darshan: Talking to someone. For example, Ayesha!
Jaimi: She is my friend and I love her dearly, but kuch cheeze koi nahi samaj sakhta.
Darshan: How about you talk to me? Let's give it a try! If it works, it works. If it doesn't then, we'll see.
Jaimi: Why do you care so much Raval?
Darshan: I-
He ponders over the question for a minute but is overwhelmed by his thoughts.
Darshan: I just care for you. Do you need a reason to care for someone?
Jaimi sits there for a minute, debating in her mind.
Jaimi: What do you want to know about Jaimi Patel's apparent picture-perfect life?
Darshan: If you want to, only if you want to, what happened after you woke from the accident?
Jaimi's face softens before she clenches her jaw to keep her composure.
Jaimi: Not much! I woke up and was told that Dad and Daksha bua had passed away. That year of my life is just blurry if that's even the word for it.
Darshan: How do you feel about it when you look back now? I mean to say- how do you feel about yourself at that time?
Jaimi: Weak and pathetic!
Darshan: Little Warrior, you're none of that! You're one of the strongest women I know of.
Silence surrounds them again.
Darshan: Why are you so cold towards your father? Everyone says you love him more than anyone so what happened? Unhone jhooth bhi issi liye bola ki tum aur Aarush safe reh sakho.
Jaimi looks away and tears threaten to spill. She pushes them back and makes sure to keep her composure.
Darshan: Jay?
Jaimi: I don't know! I don't know how to react now that he's alive.
Darshan: Shouldn't you be happy that they're safe and sound?
Jaimi: I should be and am happy, but I don't know. I was in depression for close to four years after I was told they were dead. Aarush was in the same state as me. Now, they are in front of us, hume samajh hi nahi aa raha hein ki kaise react kare. Should we be happy or mad at them?
Darshan: Maybe you can talk it out.
Jaimi: I don't know anymore! Nothing is the way I wanted it to be so-?
Darshan: What is that supposed to mean?
Jaimi: My Dad made me promise him that I will carry on the legacy of my Dadi by serving the people of Wilson Hills. My plan was to get the internship done while collecting the necessary documents and evidence to find the culprit of that accident and attend the rajyabhishek. I will get the hell out of here afterward with Aarush and live my life as Julie Prajapati away from here.
Darshan: Things didn't go in your favor!
Jaimi: I am apparently responsible for Patel Industries. On the night of my birthday, I am kidnapped and had to climb down trees into the valley and walk through the jungle without a single light to only see a little kid held at a gunpoint because of me. Aarush and I are saved by none other than my Dad and Bua who we believed died seven years ago! And, I am sharing everything with a person who I wanted nothing with. Kinda crazy! Don't you think?
Darshan: I'll take the last part as a compliment!
Jaimi gives him a look that says, 'are you serious?'
Jaimi: I'm tired, Raval!
Darshan: I know, love.
Jaimi gulps down the rest of her beer. She turns towards the pool and he replicates her actions. She places her head on his shoulder and he leans his head on hers. They stay like that for some time watching the scenery in front of them. Not a single word is exchanged between them, but a lot is said and understood through silence. They are brought out of their trance by a deep voice.
Guard: Rani sa?
Jaimi moves away from Darshan and turns to see a guard standing there with her cousins. She has a stoic expression on her face. She turns her head towards the guard to see him looking down in respect.
Jaimi: Ji?
Guard: Maharani Sa ka phone aaya hain ki aap kal subah mahal hazir ho!
Jaimi: Unse kahiye ki mein hazir ho jaaungi.
Guard: Ji. Bade sahab aap ko dhoondh rahe the!
Jaimi: Woh kaha hain abhi?
Guard: Aarush Sa ke room mein hain.
Jaimi: Thik hain. Thank you!
Ved strolls into the compound and walks up the steps. He sees his niece and nephews standing there with Jaimi. His eyes fall on Darshan standing in the corner. Ved raises his brow in question.
Khushi: Jay, humare saath baitho!
Nisha: Yeah! We'll catch you up on what's going on in our family.
Gopee: That's a good idea!
Jaimi clenches her jaw and squints her eyes at them in rage.
Jaimi: Jaimi for you guys. It's not our family. It never has been and never will be. Woh tumhari family hain aur mujhe usse door rakho toh hi behtar hoga.
Khushi: We though ki- tumne Ruaan ki jaan bachaae iss liye tumne hume maaf kar diya!
Jaimi: Insaniyat naam ki bhi cheez hoti hain. Aur, tum sab ki ghaltiyon ki sazaa woh baccha kyu bhukte? Iss kidnapping mein kis ka kitna involvement tha mujhe acche se pata hain toh jo kuch din yaha ruke hain shaanti se guzaar lijiye.
She walks away from the crowd followed by the Guard. Ved looks at them then, at Darshan.
Ved: Young man, let's take a walk!
Darshan nods his head not sure of how else to reply. Darshan is fidgeting as he follows Ved to a car. Ved hops in and waits for Darshan as he takes his precious time to take a seat. They both buckle up and leave Bhavan's premises with a unit of guards following. Darshan's hands start to get clammy. Ved notices that Darshan is fidgeting in his seat and a smirk forms on his face. Darshan doesn't realize that they have crossed the gates of the Palace. A guard parks their car as Darshan follows Ved like a lost puppy.
They enter a room that is brightly lit. Ratan and Vikraant are already present there. Ved greets the two and then, the three look at Darshan standing by the door. Darshan feels as if he's the prey and the three are the predators. He awkwardly greets the other two and they smile at him. He looks around to see the room paneled with metal. He sees targets set up on the wall opposite of him. There are dents in the wall possibly from bullets. They all chat for a few minutes before Vikraant receives a call and Ratan is called by a guard.
Ved walks over to Darshan with a pair of headphones. Darshan quickly puts them on and goes to the farthest corner in the room. Ved loads his gun and shoots at the target. Darshan jumps in the corner hearing the gunshot. After a few rounds, Ved hands Darshan the gun to which he quickly shakes his head.
Ved: C'mon lad, shoot!
Darshan: N-nahi. Yeh m-mera k- kaam nahi hain.
Ved looks at him with curiosity and confusion.
Darshan: Mein singer hoon, sir. Mein yeh sab nahi kar sakhta.
Ved: Give it a try first then, decide!
Darshan takes hold of the gun seeing that Ved is not going to budge from his decision. His hands instantly start to shake and sweat rolls down his forehead. He starts chanting the name of all the gods and goddesses he could think of at that time. He follows Ved's instructions and takes his position.
Ved: Stop with the shaking. You will never be able to shoot like that!
Darshan closes his eyes and pulls the trigger without a proper aim. He is pushed back a bit by the reflex. The bullet lands on the outermost circle. He sighs and hands the gun back to Ved who shakes his head at him.
Ved: Man up a bit!
Ved practices a few more rounds before they leave for Bhavan. Upon reaching the Bhavan they are greeted by Jaimi and Jai. Jaimi notices that Darshan is a bit shaken and she raises her eyebrow at him in a questioning manner to which he shakes his head. He mumbles a good night before hurrying away from the three.
Jaimi: What did you do?
Ved: Nothing! I took him on a ride.
Jaimi nods even though she is skeptical of his answer. She bids them good night before going to her room.
Jai: Usko darana band kar! Accha ladka hain.
Ved: Aaj kal ke ladke kaise hote hain woh mujhe pata hain. Aur, mein khud ek baap hoon!
Jai: Ab pata chala ki mein tujhe sudharne ke liye kyu kehta tha?
Ved: Pappa!
Jai: Kya Pappa? Mr. Heartbreaker Casanova, karma is a bitch!
Jai casually walks away leaving Ved dumbfounded.
The next morning, the 29th of August comes in rather quickly. Darshan doesn't see Jaimi for the entire day. Later at night, Jaimi and Aarush reach the Bhavan to see everyone sitting in the living room. Jaimi plops down beside Jai on the couch and leans her head against his chest.
Darshan's eyes are glued to Jaimi. She is wearing a beautiful pastel peach lehenga. The makeup look is kept natural but highlights her features. She is wearing her usual ring with a ruby in the middle and a diamond halo around it. A diamond haath phool graces her left hand. She is wearing long diamond earrings that compliment her lehenga.
(Imagine different jewelry)
Darshan looks away as soon as he realizes that Ved is staring at him intently. Ved smirks in response when he sees Darshan getting nervous. Ved lifts Jaimi's leg on the sofa and takes off her heels. He looks towards her fondly to see her staring at the projector screen. She laughs when the video of Aarush falling into his birthday cake plays.
Aarush: That's not funny!
Jaimi: It is.
Jaimi eventually falls asleep on the sofa with the head on Jai's chest. Darshan and the others watch videos of the Patel family from Jaimi was born to days before the accident. Aarush takes Jaimi to her room as everyone retires to their room.
The 30th of August comes in. Jaimi is wearing a button-up white shirt and black jeans. Aarush is also dressed formally.
Jaimi: Aaru, tum cafe aur farm jaa rahe hona?
Aarush: Why would I go there? Mein factory jaa raha hoon.
Jaimi: It was decided ki mein factory jaaungi!
Aarush: Uh-uh! I'm going.
Jai: Inn dono ka kaun factory jaaega uss mein bhi ladna shuru!
Daksha: Tum dono factory chale jao! Phir, cafe aur rajyabhishek ke baad farm chale jaana.
Chandresh: Rani sa, aap breakfast mein kya khaana pasand karegi?
Ved: Chandresh, yeh dono kuch nahi khaaenge. Factory ki production line pe hi humla karenge.
Jaimi: Dad!
Ved: What Dad? Vacation mein tum dono factories mein hi hote the.
Aarush: We were helping!
Daksha: Kis cheez mein? Production ki aadhe se zyada cheeze toh tum dono ke pet mein hoti thi.
Jaimi and Aarush look at each other and there is an evil glint in their eye.
RU: Factory kis cheez ki hain?
Jaimi: Chocolate, ice cream, juice, and snacks!
Ved: Aaj sab factory hi chalte hain. Waha pe kuch na kuch khaalenge.
Jaimi grabs the key to the jeep and runs away with it followed by Aarush yelling at her to come back. Ayesha sits in between Jaimi and Aarush while Darshan, Hardik, Jyugal, and Siddharth load into the back.
Like Ved had said earlier, Jaimi and Aarush had run into each factory like kids and had grabbed food straight from the production line. They had even argued over the food. He smiled seeing her act like a kid. Then, after spending about half a day at the factory Jaimi and Aarush had busied themselves with work while the others went to the cafe for a nice meal. Late afternoon, they go back to the factory. They see Jaimi talking to the manager.
Jaimi: I want the safety checks to be performed at the start and end of every shift. It should be documented and validated by the employees. Saari factories paperless ho rahi hain so everything should be digitalized before the end of the week. Aarush ki team aap ko transition mein madad karegi and they will train you as well. Any questions?
Manager: N-nahi Rani sa.
Ved and Jaimi are proud of the fact that Jaimi has a natural instinct when it comes to business. Darshan realized that Jaimi has a fun and loving side but doesn't play any games when it comes to business. They all retire to the palace and rest as tomorrow is rajyabhishek.
