Chapter 38
Jaimi unpacks and does her laundry all while the events from the trip keep playing through her mind. She takes out the waffles from her freezer. She toasts them and pours maple syrup over them. She has that for dinner. She reads news for some time to divert her mind. She calls it a day and goes to bed.
On the other hand, Darshan is sitting in the living room with Jyugal and Hardik. The two watch TV while he's just staring at the screen. He gets up and walks to his bedroom close to midnight. He grabs one of his hoodies and his phone before walking out of the house. He puts on the hoodie and walks around aimlessly in the neighborhood for an hour or so before returning home. He calls it a day and goes to sleep.
The next morning, he is up by 9. He freshens up and makes poha and coffee. They eat before leaving for the office. Darshan's mind wanders back to yesterday. He clears his head and proceeds to the conference room ignoring the flirty smiles thrown by girls along the way. He sees Naushad, Mehjabeen, Ayesha, Aishwarya, and Siddharth already seated there. The three take their seat.
Naushad: Jaimi kaha hain?
Darshan: Uh- meine aaj usko chutti di hain.
Ayesha raises her eyebrow but keeps quiet. Karishma enters the room wearing a short bodycon dress. Her assistant follows behind. She looks around the room and smiles seeing that Jaimi is missing.
Karishma: Darshan, tumhari secretary bhaag gae kya tumhare kisi friend ke saath?
She emphasizes the word, friend. She smirks at the end of her sentence.
Darshan: Karishma, watch your words!
His sharp tone made the others snap their head towards him, but Karishma seemed unmoved by it.
Naushad: Karishma, please, behave professionally.
Karishma: Of course.
She winks at Darshan to which he turns his head. The meeting passes with Darshan still in a daze. Karishma leaves with her assistant. Naushad and Mehjabben get up and push in their chair.
Naushad: Hum dono nikalte hain! Ayesha, tum sab dekh logi?
Ayesha: Haan Bhai.
Mehjabeen: Thik hain. Bye!
They all say bye before the two left. Aishwarya looks at the five in the room who are sitting there like statues. She shakes her head and looks up to see Ayesha walking out. Aishwarya walks out as well and decides to grab herself a drink from the cafeteria.
Jyugal: Jaimi kaha hain?
Darshan: Meine kaha na ki meine usko chutti di hain.
Siddharth: Achanak se?
Darshan: Haan! Yeh trip ne sab ko bahot thaka diya hain so-
Hardik: Chup be chuti-
Jyugal hits him with the file in front of him.
Jyugal: Language! Yeh ghar nahi hain.
Hardik: Tera bas chale na toh Jaimi ko apne se baandh ke rakhe! Aur, ab chahta hain ki hum iss baat pe yaqeen kare ki tumne usko chutti di hain?
Siddharth: Kya kiya tumne?
Darshan: Jaimi resigned!
Jyugal: Heh? Aap ne kya kiya woh batane ka kasht karenge?
Darshan: Uss raat galti se mere muh se kuch zyada hi nikal gaya aur usko bahot bura laga. Usne resign kar diya!
Siddharth: Tune exactly kya bola?
Darshan: Woh Nirmaan aur Jay kuch zyada hi saath mein ghum rahe the toh meine uspe hi sawaal kiye aur-
Hardik: And?
Darshan: Mere muh se kuch nikal gaya toh.
Jyugal: Ajeeb insaan hain tu!
Siddharth: Log rishta jodne ke liye maafi mangte hain aur tum rishta jod ke todne ke liye maafi maangte ho!
Hardik: Iss baar maafi maangi ya nahi?
Darshan: Maang li! Ek baar nahi kahi baar par lagta nahi hain ki woh maanegi.
Siddharth: I'm surprised ki iss baar thappad nahi pada.
Darshan: Khaya woh bhi badi zor se!
The three laugh at him.
Darshan: Haan haso aur haso mere dukh mein! Jyugal, teri toh baadme Ayesha ke saamne band bajata hoon.
Jyugal: Iss mein Ayesha kaha se aae?
Darshan turns to look at Hardik and Siddharth.
Darshan: Chal nahi raha tha kya?
Siddharth: Abhi nahi.
Hardik: Khaali khota jhataka na aape aene! (Aise hi jhatke mat de usse!)
Jyugal: Kya?
They wave their hand and dismiss him. Jyugal mutters something under his breath. Darshan gets up.
Hardik: Kidhar?
Darshan: Ayesha se milne.
Jyugal: Kyu?
Darshan: Usko puch leta hoon ki usse pata hain ki Jay kaha hain.
Siddharth: Sambhal ke!
Darshan: Matalab?
Hardik: Karishma uss raat Jaimi ke baare mein kuch galat bol rahi thi toh Ayesha ne uski bolti band karva di thi toh usse pata chalega ki teri wajah se Jaimi waha se gae thi aur tune jo kaha tha toh-
Darshan: Toh?
Hardik: Tera toh kachumber bana degi!
Darshan: Darra mat.
Jyugal: Hum bhi chalte hain. Thik hain?
Darshan nods. They leave the conference room and make their way to Ayesha and Karishma's cabin. They stand out hearing Ayesha's voice. She is talking to someone on the phone.
Ayesha: Mujhe uss aurat ka naam nahi sunana! Dada, mein abhi se ke rahi hoon agar mujhe woh aurat kahi bhi uss din dikhi toh-
They all are taken back by her sharp tone. Darshan raises his hand to knock but drops it hearing her voice.
Ayesha: Woh ladki meri kuch nahi lagti! Mera sirf ek cousin hain. Uss aurat ne past mein kya kiya hain woh mujhe yaad dilane ki zaroorat nahi hain. Uss ki wajah se hi sab kuch hua tha woh nahi dikh raha.
There is silence for a few seconds. Again, Darshan raises his hand to knock but drops it.
Ayesha: Kaki pe sawaal uthane se pehle aapne apne laadle bete pe sawaal kyu nahi uthaya?
They look at each other and mentally debate if it's safe to go in.
Ayesha: Accha sab ke liye wahi thik tha? Kis ke liye thik tha woh toh batae zara mujhe? Dadi, woh sirf aap ke laadle bete ke liye thik tha aur Mehta khaandan ki izzat ke liye. Aur, apne paute ki baat kar rahi thi toh woh kaha hain aap ko pata bhi hain? Zinda hain ya-
Hardik is about to walk away when Jyugal and Siddharth pull him back.
Ayesha: Sach kadwa hi hota hain. Aur, mein ab koi choti bacchi nahi hoon. Mere sach batane se itna hi problem ho toh aap ki doosri pauti ko jisko aapne sar aankho pe bitha ke rakha haina usko hi sab de dena. Thik hain? Aur, mujhe aap ke paute tarah hi bhul jaana. Jay Shree Krishna!
She hangs up the call and drops it on the table. The four wait a minute or two before knocking on the door. They enter the room.
Ayesha: Kuch kaam tha?
Darshan: H-haan.
Ayesha: Kya?
Darshan: Woh do you know ki Jaimi kaha hain?
Ayesha: Nahi. Meri aaj baat nahi hue hain.
Darshan: Oh.
Ayesha: Kuch kaam ho toh usko call kar do. She will answer.
Darshan: Nahi mujhe usse ek file leni hain toh.
Ayesha: Woh ghar pe hi hogi! Just call her before you go to confirm.
Darshan: Ok. Thank you!
Ayesha: Aap teeno ko kuch kaam tha?
Jyugal, Siddharth, and Hardik shake their head, instantly. The three-wave their hand and sprint out of the office. Darshan does the same. Ayesha is confused about what just happened.
Ayesha: Pata nahi Jaimi inn sab se kaise deal karti hain? Item hain saare ke saare!
She shakes her head and sighs. They meet up with Aishwarya.
Aishwarya: Agar Jaimi se maafi maangne wale ho toh flowers leke jaana.
Darshan: What?
Aishwarya: Tum aksar Jaimi se ladte rehte ho aur Ayesha se uske baare puch rahe the toh I thought kuch hua hoga phirse. Take white orchids if you're apologizing!
Darshan nods before they walk away. They leave the office and make their way to Darshan's house. The day passes and it's 5:30 in the evening. The four are sitting in the studio.
Siddharth: Tu Jaimi ko aise kheech ke kyu leke gaya tha?
Darshan: Meine kheecha nahi tha! I just wanted to talk so waha se thoda door leke gaya tha.
Jyugal: Aise kaun baat karne ke liye leke jaata hain?
Hardik: Sidha point pe aao na! Yeh Nirmaan se jealous tha because Jaimi was spending time with him during the trip.
Darshan: Mein koi jealous-vealous nahi hoon!
Hardik: Accha? Toh har baar Jaimi aur Nirmaan ko saath dekh kar Raval baba ka muh kyu phool jata tha?
The other two snicker while Darshan shakes his head and turns around to face the computer screen.
Darshan: Kuch bhi matalab?
He swivels his chair to face them.
Darshan: Aur, tum teeno ko aaj kal kuch nahi hain? Humesha mere aur Jaimi ke peeche lage rehte ho.
Siddharth: Aaj kal aap mere kaabil dost Jaimi ke peeche bhaagte rehte hain uska kya?
Darshan: Mein kisi ke piche nahi bhagta!
Jyugal: Shimla mein humesha Jaimi ke aas paas hi milta tha.
Darshan: Aisa kuch nahi hain aur mein uske piche nahi bhaagta tha! Woh mere piche aati thi because she's my assistant. Happy?
Hardik: Toh assistant ki personal life se tujhe kya lena dena?
Darshan: Mujhe kuch lena dena nahi hain! I was just looking out for her.
Siddharth: Yaar, tu maan lena ki tu possessive hain aur baat khatam kar!
Darshan: Mein possessive nahi. Protective hoon! I didn't want ki usse koi hurt kare. Men are not to be trusted!
Jyugal: Toh aap kya hain?
Darshan stares at him for a second.
Darshan: Some men!
Hardik: Kaise aadmi hain re tu?
Darshan: Anyways, I'm getting late. Bye!
He walks out of the studio and grabs a towel on the way to the bathroom. He freshens up and changes into a white shirt and denim. He styles his hair. He leaves the apartment with his car keys, wallet, and phone.
He is driving towards Jaimi's house when he spots a florist shop. He parks the car on the side of the road and makes his way into the shop. He sees two females behind the counter. The girl looks to be in her early twenties while the older lady looks close to 50. They both greet him with a smile.
Darshan: Mujhe flowers chahiye the.
He looks around the shop and sees a variety of flowers. He becomes indecisive and decides to call the boys for help, but drops it knowing they'll tease him forever about it. The younger girl walks near him.
Sara: Uh- hi! I'm a really big fan of yours.
Darshan: Thank you!
Sara: Can I get a selfie with you.
Darshan nods. She clicks a few selfies with him. The older woman comes out from what looks like the storage area. He glances down at her nameplate that reads Maria.
Maria: Sara, water the flowers!
Sara nods and goes back to where she was and continues the task while keeping an eye on Darshan.
Maria: How may I help you, young man?
Darshan: Umm... mein flowers dhoondh raha hoon.
Maria: Ok. Tumhe konse chahiye?
Darshan: I don't really know.
Maria: Kis occasion ke liye?
Darshan: Koi occasion nahi hain! I just wanted to apologize.
Maria: White orchids are perfect if you're apologizing to a male or a family or friends.
Darshan: She's not family and abhi tak friends nahi bane hain.
He scratches the back of his neck as a teasing smile makes its way onto Maria's face.
Maria: It's a girl then?
Sara suddenly becomes alert and moves closer to listen to their conversation.
Darshan: Yeah. Woh kuch zyada hi gussa ho gae hain.
Maria: I would recommend pastel pink roses. They symbolize grace, gentleness, and admiration. Ladkiyon ko aksar pasand aate hain.
Darshan: Woh thodi alag hain!
Maria: Mein apne experience se bata rahi hoon. My husband always brought those when we were younger.
Darshan smiles as Maria's eyes shine at the mention of her husband. Maria packs the flowers and he pays for them. He bids her goodbye and leaves the shop. On the way to Jaimi's apartment, he stops by a beach to think about how he's going to approach the matter.
He looks around at his surrounding to see a familiar female crossing the road. She's wearing a navy blue off-the-shoulder romper that looks like a dress. Her wavy hair is left open. She has her phone in her hand and is wearing a mask as she moves towards the beach. He quickly gets out of the car and locks it. He follows the female then, suddenly remembers that he left the bouquet in the car. He runs back to the car grabs it before locking the car. He returns to the beach to see no trace of that female.
Darshan: Shit!
He looks around and decides if he wants to go to the left or right. He goes towards the left where his heart is pointing towards. He walks for a few minutes and sees the female from earlier walking along the shore. He moves towards her and places his hand on her shoulder. She jumps in her place and turns around.
Darshan: Jay?
Jaimi: Raval?
She shivers at the feel of his hand against her bare shoulder.
Jaimi: Can you remove your hand?
He quickly withdraws his hand and drops it to his side. He stares at her face as the wind blows her hair.
Jaimi: Tum mera peecha kyu kar rahe ho?
Darshan: Mujhe baat karni thi.
Jaimi: Kya?
Darshan: I'm sorry for what I said, Jay! I can't take back my words, but please.
A girl at about 10 feet distance from them starts recording a video expecting a proposal since Darshan has flowers in his hands. She stares at the two in awe, not aware of Darshan's identity.
Jaimi: Raval, we talked about this before.
Darshan makes a babyface. She felt a tug in her heart seeing him pout like a baby but shakes off the feeling.
Darshan: Tum har baar mujhe maaf karti aae ho, so be crazy one last time and agree, please. I promise iss baar koi ghadbad nahi karunga. Little Warrior, please!
She just looks at him, not knowing how to reply or approach the situation. He takes her hand in his and kneels in front of her with puppy dog eyes.
Jaimi: Get up! Sab dekh rahe hain.
Darshan: No! Jab tak tum mujhe maaf nahi karti tab tak nahi uthunga.
Jaimi: Don't be childish! You're a well-known face and it will draw attention.
Darshan: I don't care! Little Warrior, please. Mein tumhare liye flowers bhi leke aaya hoon. Jay? I won't do it again.
Jaimi looks everywhere, but at him. He still has his puppy dog eyes which are causing her anger to slowly vanish.
Darshan: Jay?
His tone is that of a child, so innocent and cute.
Jaimi: Fine, but you will have to start respecting the employee-employer boundaries.
Darshan: Anything you say!
Jaimi: I accept your apology, Raval!
Darshan: Really?
Jaimi nods. He grins and stands up. He embraces her in a hug. She reluctantly wraps her arms around him. There was something about that moment. Nothing seemed to matter to them. It felt like the time froze for those few moments. Jaimi pulls away after a minute, hearing the sound of clapping. She looks around to see everyone looking at them and clapping. Some even recording them.
Darshan: Shit.
Jaimi: Indeed, Raval!
He hands her the flowers and grabs the cap that he keeps in his back pocket. He puts it on to hide his face.
Darshan: Sorry!
She simply nods. He holds her hand as they walk away from the crowd. They walk along the shore for a few minutes before settling on the sand.
Jaimi: Who told you ki yeh mere favorite flowers hain? Ayesha?
Darshan: No. Meine sab ko yahi bola hain ki meine tumhe aaj chutti di hain.
Jaimi glares at him to which he smiles, sweetly and innocently. She shakes her head knowing his antics.
Darshan: Woh florist shop wali aunty ne meri help ki thi.
Jaimi nods in response. They watch the sunset in silence. Once again, he takes hold of her hand. She tries to pull away, but he tightens his hold.
Jaimi: Raval, boundaries!
Darshan: Jay, kuch minute pehle hi inn sab ne ek show dekha hain so thodi derr chalne do.
Jaimi: Show meine dikhaya tha?
Darshan: Involve toh tum bhi thi na?
Jaimi: Ughh!
They walk towards his car, hand-in-hand.
Darshan: Mein tumhe drop kar deta hoon. It's getting dark!
Jaimi nods. He opens the door for her like a gentleman. She mutters a thank you. He pulls up into the parking lot of her apartment complex within minutes. The car ride was filled with silence.
Jaimi: Good night!
Darshan: Good night!
She steps out of the car with the bouquet. He drives back to his apartment with a smile plastered on his face.
