Chapter 28
It is around 4 in the morning on the 6th of August. Jaimi is up and gets ready for the day. She makes herself a strong black coffee and sits on the balcony with it. She grabs a small pocketbook album from her bag. She plugs in her AirPods and watches the calm snow-covered mountains. Not long after, it starts snowing.
She sips her coffee and slowly opens the pocketbook. She flips the pages and looks at the pictures. She turns the page once more before stoping on a picture. Her heart starts to beat frantically in her chest and it feels like time has stilled.
After a few minutes, she hears the door to the balcony open. She quickly wipes the tears that she didn't know trailed down her cheeks. She closes the book and places it on the table. She cranes her neck to see Darshan standing in his balcony staring at the view before him.
Jaimi: Good morning.
Darshan looks at her and nods. She finds his mood a bit off but decides to ignore it thinking it must be because it's early in the morning.
Jaimi: Do you want me to send you your schedule?
Darshan: For?
Jaimi: Today, 7th, 8th, and the 9th.
Darshan: Tum mere saath hogi toh mujhe schedule ki zaroorat nahi hain!
Jaimi: Ayesha and I have to relocate with the other crew for the shoot as it's too far to travel back and forth every day.
Darshan: Bhai ne mujhe kuch nahi bataya tha!
Jaimi: Kal raat to decide hua after dinner! Mein tumhare room mein aae thi but you were sleeping. Bhai will look after your schedule for the time being!
Darshan opens his mouth to say something but closes it as Ayesha opens the door.
Ayesha: Jay?
Jaimi turns in her seat to look at her. She hums in response.
Ayesha: AM tumse baat karna chahta hain!
She nods and takes the phone from her hand. She presses it against her ear and clears her throat.
Jaimi: Evet? (Yes?)
Ayesha: Good morning!
Darshan: Good morning!
AM: O adam kim? (Who's that guy?)
Jaimi: Patronum. (My boss.)
AM: Sabahın köründe seninle ne yapıyor? (What is he doing with you so early in the morning?)
Jaimi: Sakinleşecek misin? O kendi balkonunda ben de benim balkonumda ama onlar yakın. (Will you calm down? He's on his balcony and I'm on mine, but they are close.)
AM: Nasıl bir yerde kalıyorsun? Neden onun yanındasın? (What kind of place are you staying at? Why are you even around him?)
Jaimi: Calm down! It's not that serious.
AM: Bu! Seni başka bir erkekle görmek istemiyorum. (It is! I don't want to see you with another man.)
Jaimi: Durabilir misin? (Can you stop?)
AM: Numara! Lanet geçmişin kendini tekrar etmesini istemiyorum. (No! I don't want the fucking past repeating itself.)
Jaimi: Genç ve aptaldım! (I was young and stupid!)
AM: Yeter bu tartışma! Yirmi saniyeye geliyorum. O zaman bu meselenin bitmesini istiyorum, sadece sen ve ben. Anlaşıldı? (Enough of this discussion! I'm coming on the twenty-second. I want this matter to end then, it's only you and me. Understood?)
Jaimi hums in response.
AM: Kendine dikkat et! Ve sana ulaşmasına izin ver. (Take care of yourself! And let don't him get to you.)
Jaimi: Hoşçakal! (Bye!)
AM: Bana kızma prenses! Seni seviyorum ve lütfen kendine iyi bak. (Don't be mad at me, princess! I love you and please take care.)
Jaimi hands back the phone to Ayesha after he hung up. A strong wind blows causing Darshan and Ayesha to shiver while Jaimi is standing there calmly. The pocketbook opens and the pages turn before the wind stops. Ayesha is the first to notice. She sees the picture and her eyes moisten. Jaimi is standing there clueless until she sees Darshan looking at the table.
The picture is of a girl and a boy who like they are 5 or 6. The girl has a strong resemblance to Jaimi. Her jet black hair falls inches past her shoulder and she has a cute smile on her face. She is wearing a casual pink dress while the boy is wearing formal pants, a button-down shirt, a vest, and a tie. He is kissing Jaimi's cheeks. The picture is black and white and has some kind of vintage filter to it making it look dreamy. The background is of a field surrounded by mountains.
Darshan's jaw ticks as he tightens his hold on the railing. Jaimi looks at the picture. She quickly closes the book and shoves it in her purse before looking at Ayesha. Darshan sees Ayesha wiping underneath her eyes. Jaimi puts on a stoic expression before looking away for a brief moment.
Jaimi: I'll text you the schedule.
Her voice was flat, but deep down he know she is disturbed. He nods his head. Ayesha gives him a small smile which he replies with a warm one. She heads inside their room followed by Jaimi who gives him a nod on the way into the room.
Darshan returns to his room and gets ready for the day. Jaimi packs her and Ayesha's bag as Ayesha gets ready. They both head down to the parking lot to be met by the others. Darshan is casually leaning against a car with his hands in his pocket. She looks around to see Hardik, Jyugal, Siddharth, Naushad, and Mehjabeen.
They all greet each other. Jaimi sees Ayesha looking agonized. She keeps her expression deadpan, not wanting to give anything away. It's about 4:45 now.
Naushad: Breakfast ke liye kaha jaana hain?
Darshan: Yaha dining area hain!
Naushad: Woh 7'o clock khulta hain.
Jyugal: Kahi bhi chalte hain!
Hardik: Bahot bhookh lagi hain.
Jaimi: I know of a place. It should be open by now.
Ayesha: Highland wala?
Jaimi nods. Ayesha looks at her shocked which grabs everyone's attention.
Jaimi: It's a 45-minute drive from here.
Naushad: Wahi chalte hain! You would have to lead us.
Jaimi nods. They all start towards individual cars. Jaimi goes into the two-seater with Darshan on tow. Ayesha, Jyugal, Naushad, Mehjabeen, Hardik, and Siddharth get into the van.
Jaimi locks her seatbelt while Darshan is staring at her. She pulls out of the parking lot and hits the road. He notices that she keeps her eyes trained on the road and her body seems tense.
Darshan: Tum zyada drive nahi karti?
Jaimi: Pehle karti thi! Ab chod diya.
Darshan: Kyu?
Jaimi: Mere paas car nahi hain aur usually public transport use karti hoon.
Darshan: When did you learn to drive?
Jaimi: When I was 14-15!
Darshan: You're one of those spoiled brats?
Jaimi's jaw ticks and she tightens her hold on the steering wheel. She keeps her mouth shut and continues to drive. Darshan notices it and regrets it but decides to not say anything. The rest of the journey is quiet. They reach before time. Darshan debates whether it was because the roads were cleared or she didn't want to be with him.
Jaimi parks the car and walks towards the front entrance. Darshan follows her along with the others. The sign beside him reads Cafe Under Tree. Jaimi signals Ayesha, who walks past everyone and into the cafe. Jaimi enters in between them.
They look around the cafe in awe. Jaimi and Ayesha sit beside each other with Darshan on the right of the duo and Jyugal on the left. The cafe is beautiful with red clay-colored tiles covering the floor and a wood ceiling. The walls of the cafe are made with glass to allow the guest to enjoy the enticing view of nature. The waiter comes around and pens down everyone's order.
Jaimi excuses herself to the restroom after a few minutes. She leaves her phone on the table. Her phone goes off. Ayesha and Darshan's eyes fall on it at the same time. The screen displays Avukat as the name of the caller.
Ayesha: Hello? Dur! (Stop!)
Avukat: Ayşe? (Ayesha?)
Jaimi returns to the table and Ayesha hands her the phone. She reads the name and puts it against her ear but the call drops.
Mehjabeen: Ayesha, mujhe pata nahi tha ki tum bhi Jaimi ki tarah alag alag languages bol sakhti ho!
Ayesha: Nahi-nahi! Mere knowledge sirf Gujarati, Hindi, aur English tak hi seemit hain. Jaimi ki wajah se mujhe kuch basic Turkish words aate hain.
Siddharth: Jaimi kitni languages bol sakhti hain?
Ayesha: She is fluent in 9 languages!
Everyone's mouth drops open.
Mehjabeen: Seriously?
Jaimi nods.
Naushad: Kaunsi?
Ayesha: Gujarati, Hindi, English, Bengali, Spanish, Turkish, French, Arabic, and Portuguese.
Hardik: Tum saari ki saari languages mein bol sakhti ho?
Jaimi nods and almost shrinks in her seat from all the attention.
Ayesha: Yeah! She can speak, read, and write in all the languages.
Hardik: That's so cool!
Jaimi offers him a small smile, not liking the attention.
Their orders are served. Everyone has ordered proper breakfast other than Jaimi who has settled for black coffee. Her phone rings again. She excuses herself and walks to the closest balcony. She chats for a minute or two before joining the others.
Jaimi doesn't bother with whatever conversation they are having at the table. She continues sipping her black coffee while deeply thinking about something. She is brought out of her trance due to the ringing of her phone. Once again, she excuses herself and steps out to the balcony with her coffee.
She stares out at the landscape ahead of her while listening to the person speaking on the other hand. She just hums in response. The call ends in a minute or two. She decides to stay outside. Images from past flash in front of her eyes and she shuts her eyes tightly. She turns around at the sound of clearing of the throat. She turns to see Nirmaan.
Jaimi: Oh, hey.
She says it with a small smile.
Nirmaan: Hi! Just came to say thank you about last night.
Jaimi: No problem! I should head back in.
Nirmaan nods. Jaimi walks past him back into the cafe. She takes her seat. For the next few minutes they are in the cafe, she feels Darshan staring at her. They leave the cafe soon after and get in the cars. Jaimi puts in on her mask when they are leaing, but takes it off once in the car.
Jaimi gets irritated with Darshan staring at her for no reason. The silence between them starts troubling her. She turns her head to the side and Darshan quickly looks away. She rolls her eyes and looks ahead of her. She starts tapping the steering wheel with her fingers to tick him off, but gets no response other than him staring at her like an owl.
Jaimi: Raval, speak!
Darshan: What?
Jaimi: Tumhare dimaag mein kya chal raha hain woh bolo!
Darshan: Mere dimaag mein kya chal raha hoga?
Jaimi: Toh mujhe ullu ki tarah ghoor kyu rahe ho?
Darshan: Mein nahi ghoor raha!
He shrugs it off. Jaimi raises an eyebrow at him, but the silence starts to agitate her. She presses the accelerator and takes over the van. Her phone rings shortly after. She answers it and puts it on speaker.
Ayesha: Jaimi Patel, slow the car down!
Jaimi: What?
Ayesha: Speed kam kar!
Jaimi: Karti hoon baba! Gussa kyu kar rahi hain?
Ayesha: Jay!
Ayesha's voice sounds stern and demanding.
Jaimi: Fine woman!
Ayesha: Don't woman me!
Ayesha yells through the phone. Jaimi slows the car down while Darshan stiffles a chuckle. Jaimi hears the others chuckling through the phone. She ends the call. Darshan starts laughing while holding her stomach.
Jaimi: Why are you laughing?
Darshan: Tumhe daant padi iss wajah se!
Jaimi: Woh mujhe daant nahi rahi thi! She was just concerned kyu ki...
Darshan: Kyu ki?
Jaimi: Kuch nahi.
Jaimi shakes her to get rid of the memory. The ride back to the hotel is filled with silence. Jaimi wears her mask before they all step out of their car. Hardik and Jyugal load their lugagge into the van along with Jaimi and Ayesha.
Naushad: Tum chaaro ke rehne ke liye jagah book ho gae hain! The crew left, so tum logo ko waha shooting destination pe hi milenge.
The four nod. Naushad gives them instructions and briefs them about what they need to do. Once he's done, Hardik and Jyugal bid goodbye to everyone. Jaimi moves towards Darshan and hands him the hoodie.
Jaimi: Sorry woh kal dena bhul gae thi. Bye!
Darshan takes the hoodie from her hands and nods. Jaimi stares at him for a moment feeling suspicious about his behavior, but turns on her heels and walks towards the van. Jyugal is driver's seat with Ayesha in the front passanger seat. Jaimi and Hardik slide into the backseat. They wave at the other four from the inside of the car before Jyugal pulls out of the parking lot.
The four walk back towards their room. Darshan doesn't miss the look Siddharth is giving him. They get into their room. Darshan locks the door and turns to see Siddharth with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
