To Break Me Down

This was bad, very bad, after what happened at the mountain the heroes had to figure out where to take Phantom. They agreed that the safest place to bring him was the watchtower and now they had no idea what to do. Phantom was having trouble sitting still and the heroes were a bit disturbed by what happened as well.

That man, whatever he was, seemed like he couldn't be stopped when he was walking toward Phantom. Robin's disk went through him and he melted Artemis's arrow which made them think that he was the one that set that building on fire during the mission. The more they learned about this guy the more they understood why Phantom was scared of him, and the more they regretted not listening to him.

Superboy was the one to break the silence, "I don't get it, how could he melt an arrow?"

Phantom answered, "Because it's what he does, he can start fires, I'm not surprised he can melt things."

Black Canary spoke, "Phantom, what exactly can he do?"

Phantom was quiet for a minute, "Other then starting fires he can suddenly appear anywhere he wants. Even I'm not sure if he can do more or not but I know he's persistent, nothing stops him, you saw that at the mountain."

Batman spoke, "Has he ever done that before?"

"Done what, gotten close enough to kill me with his bare hands if he wanted to, no, he's never done that. Hell, he's gotten bolder over the last month, he never showed up when I was around people before."

Phantom buried his head in his hands and the heroes were shocked, Flash spoke, "Wait, he's never shown up with people around before?"

"No, it was always when I was alone, that was the only thing that kept him away and now even that doesn't work." Phantom seemed frustrated but he kept hiding his face in his hands, "I don't know what he's going to do anymore. It's like the rules he's been playing by were suddenly thrown out the window, he could kill me right now and I wouldn't be able to do a damn thing."

The heroes all looked at each other and Batman stood up, "I'll be back, don't leave Phantom alone."

The other heroes nodded and Batman left the room, he called a meeting in the watchtower but excluded the Leaguers with Phantom. Everyone got there fairly quickly since Batman said it was urgent and when they were all sitting Wonder Woman spoke. "Where are the others?"

Batman looked at her, "They're currently watching Phantom which is why I called this meeting."

Hawk Girl spoke, "What did he do?"

Batman felt a slightly bit of anger when he heard that, "He hasn't done anything." The Leaguers seemed a bit surprised by his harsh tone and Batman forced himself to calm down. "Black Canary diagnosed Phantom as being delusional about a month ago, we recently learned he actually isn't."

"Robin and Phantom saw him at their school, the team saw him on a mission, and he was most recently seen in Mt. Justice."

The Leaguers looked absolutely shocked and Captain Marvel spoke, "How did it get in the mountain?"

"We don't know, what we do know is that he is very real and is actively seeking out Phantom for an unknown reason. The cameras in the mountain did capture an image of him but he wasn't seen walking in, this is the man." Batman brought up an enlarged image of the man from when he was caught on camera, the image alone made some of the Leaguers shiver.

Batman continued, "We don't know who he is or the extent of his abilities, all we know is that Phantom is his target. Phantom said he's seen him since he was a young child and he's been showing up ever since. His behavior recently changed as well, up until now he apparently hasn't showed up around people but he's been showing up where Phantom would usually be safe."

"Due to the events at the mountain we've concluded that the watchtower is the safest place for him and brought him here."

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) spoke, "You brought him here, that could put everyone in danger!"

Batman glared at him a little, "Like it or not Phantom is part of the team which makes him the League's responsibility. We don't know what this thing that's after Phantom is capable of or what he's going to do but he is very capable of killing Phantom."

The Leaguers looked at each other and Dr. Fate spoke, "I agree that we do need to make sure he is safe but what are we supposed to do?"

Batman looked at Fate, "We don't know when or if he'll show up here and we can't keep Phantom at the watchtower forever. We need to figure out who or what this man is and stop him, the Leaguers that are currently with Phantom will stay here to protect him."

Green Lantern (John Stewart) spoke, "Where should we start?"

"Start at the mountain where he was last seen, look for clues he may have left behind before checking the other places he was seen." Batman brought up a map with three red dots indicating where Phantom said he saw the man along with a picture for each location. "I'll ask Phantom about the other places he's seen him, stay in groups of three or four in case he shows up."

The Leaguers nodded and took that as an indication that the meeting was over so they left to go to the locations. Fate walked up to Batman, "If anything happens I would like you to contact me first, it is imperative that Phantom is safe."

Batman didn't know exactly what Fate meant by that but nodded nonetheless and Fate left to help the others. Batman went back to the others and Robin had to keep one arm around the halfa's waist to stop him from pacing or getting worked up. Batman sat down in front of Phantom, "The other Leaguers are going to search for the man that's been following you."

Phantom shook his head, "They won't find him, either way I don't what to know what'll happen if they run into him."

Everyone frowned and Robin pulled Phantom a little closer, whether it was to comfort himself or Phantom Batman didn't know. "Can you tell me the other places you've seen the man?"

Phantom was quiet for a second, "Alley's, the forest outside the facility, outside the places I've been staying. He shows up every time I'm alone, I don't really pay attention to where when he shows up because I just want to get away from him."

Batman marked some of the locations on a map, mostly the forest and places he knew Phantom had stayed, and sent them to the Leaguers. A few minutes later Batman was notified that one of the zeta tubes was being activated. He thought it was odd since none of the others should be back yet so he decided to check it out and the others followed.

They didn't want anyone to be alone at the moment and sticking together as a group seemed like the best option. So they all walked to the zeta tubes and got there just in time for them to activate and for someone to walk through. When they appeared everyone stopped dead in their tracks, the man had just walked in using the zeta tubes.

He just stood there for a few seconds before he looked at Phantom and the halfa had no idea what to do. All of a sudden a wall of fire sprang up between Phantom and the others, the halfa quickly backed away before fire sprang up on his other side. Fire then ignited behind him, he was trapped and the fire made a straight line from Phantom to the man.

Phantom was frozen for a minute, he didn't know how this could be happening, this was his nightmare come to life. He had to relearn how to breathe before he worked up the courage to speak, "Fine, you got me." The heroes stared at Phantom in shock and disbelief, "I'll admit, I'm fucking terrified of you."

Phantom's hand was shaking a little and he took a deep breath, "I'm done running, I'm done being scared of you. If you want to hurt me or kill me then fine but I'm not running anymore, so go ahead and do your worst."

The heroes were shouting at Phantom now but he couldn't heard them very well over the roaring flames. The man didn't say a word, after a few seconds he slowly started walking toward Phantom and the flames kept closing in. The man didn't seem to be in any sort of hurry, this was the walk of a man that had all the time in the world to do what he wanted.

Phantom waited, he didn't move and what surprised him was that he wasn't as scared as he thought he would be. The man eventually stood right in front of Phantom, he stopped less then a foot away and stared at Phantom for a few seconds. He then slowly reached up and touched the tips of his fingers to the left side of Phantom's head.

At first nothing happened but then something seemed to slowly be burning Phantom from the inside out. It spread slowly but it burned just like a flame would, it was painful but Phantom couldn't even yell. He eventually felt his legs give out as his vision started going black and he wondered if this was how he was going to die.

Phantom never stopped looking the man in the eye and when Phantom fell the man seemed to crumble into a pile of black ashes. Phantom fell on his side and he was barely conscious at this point, he knew the flames were gone thought. He then felt someone lift him up a little and he could tell from the feeling alone that it was Robin.

He couldn't speak and after another few seconds he blacked out, he wasn't aware of anything after that.
