Waking up next to Rylie was something I'd done a few times, but never did I tire of it. I didn't think I would. She was so beautiful, always, but there was something about her when she was unconscious that I couldn't get over. She had no thoughts running through her ever-busy mind. She was peaceful.
I was still thinking about this hours later, as we drove to her house. It was just before midday, and Rylie had to go home to officially meet her sister's boyfriend. I wasn't about to let her out of my grasp and I knew she didn't mind.
The ride to her place was short and silent, comfortable with her hand in mine. Every so often she would look over at me and smile, but she didn't know that I knew. I kept my eyes straight on the road and made sure not to smile or do anything crazy like that. Then she'd stop, and that would suck.
We got to her place and walked in the door hand in hand, with none of her family around. I knew we were headed to the kitchen before she dragged me there, and sitting on the counter was Kye. He jumped off the bench and grinned at his sister.
"Hey Kye," Rylie said, pulling him into a hug with the arm that wasn't attached to me.
"Hey guys," he said, before his eyes caught sight of our intertwined hands. "Are you guys a thing?"
Rylie nodded and I tried not to roll my eyes. We were basically a thing before yesterday, but now we were dating.
Wait, were we dating? I hadn't technically asked her out so I didn't know. Oh shit, how could I have messed this up as well? I had to ask. But I also had to wait until we were alone.
"Thank freaking God!" Kye exclaimed. "Oh, by the way. Charlie and Adam will be here in like, an hour. So I'll be back then." He turned and left. He was such a weird kid, much like his sister.
When the front door closed, Rylie turned to me with a cute smile. "Well... What do you want to do?"
"How about piano?" I asked. I'd been trying to learn an Ed Sheeran song for her and I'd learnt the introduction. I wanted to play it.
We walked out to her shed and sat at the piano, side by side. She lifted the lid and gently stroked the keys in the best rendition of Happy Birthday I'd ever heard. Maybe I was just biased, but it was amazing. I'd almost forgotten it was my birthday with all of this going on.
"Oh come on," I laughed, nudging her side. "Play me something real."
"Something real?" She laughed, seeming kind of confused.
"Yeah. A song you love," I said, before adding; "That's not by Good Charlotte."
"Oh come on, you love Good Charlotte!" She raised her eyebrows suspiciously and I just shook my head. They were one of my favourite bands but I didn't want to listen to them.
"I do but you know what I mean." And then I figured it was as good a time as any, so I put my fingers to the keys and jaggedly played the introduction Hazel had taught me to All Of The Stars. I stopped before the lyrics were supposed to come in.
"You didn't tell me you could play," she pouted, looking at me with her blue eyes that seemed irritated I didn't tell her something that didn't exist.
"I can't," I admitted. "But I asked Hazel to teach me this so I could play it to you. This is as far as I've got." I stopped playing just before the lyrics were supposed to come in, and of course Rylie picked it back up for me. Of course she knew how to play.
I sang, and she joined me. She was blushing through the whole song which I found completely adorable, and after I pinched her nose. "You are so talented," I told her.
"You are so full of it." She rejected my compliment. Some day, I'd have to figure out a way to convince her of her talent. She went on to play Fix You by Coldplay, but after she kept playing and I wandered around. Her shed was kind of huge, with lots of hidden corners with hidden gems.
I had gone behind a shelf thing where I found some paintings, one in particular that stood out. It was of two people dancing, the girl with a mask over her eyes and the boy with a full face mask. The background was dark blue, like in the middle of a clear night in summer. It was like a photograph, only better.
"What's this?" I asked. The playing stopped immediately, followed by the sound of the piano lid closing and footsteps coming my way.
When she came around the corner she seemed a bit nervous, biting her lip as she stood beside me. "That was going to be your birthday present, but it's not really good enough so yeah, I didn't."
"Was this at Patrick's party?" I asked, unable to take my eyes off the painting. It was us.
"Uh, yeah."
I couldn't find the words adequate to describe this painting, so instead I settled for "This is brilliant," turning to face her so that she'd know I was being serious. She didn't disagree. Actually, it was one of the first time's she'd ever accepted a compliment from me.
That reminded me of a certain question I needed to ask her.
"Hey, I kind of need to ask you something."
"Shoot," she nodded, with a slight frown. I wanted to tell her it was nothing bad but I had to focus on getting these words out.
"Well, uh. I kind of realised that I never actually asked you this," I started, working so hard not to stutter. That would ruin the whole thing. "So. Will you be my girlfriend?"
I could see her keeping her sarcastic remarks at bay. The mischief was just behind her eyes and I wanted to laugh.
She just nodded, turning to face the piano but not before I caught a glimpse of her red cheeks. I didn't know why but she hated it when she blushed. To me, her red cheeks were cute.
"RYLIE! MAX!" The door to the shed swung open and standing there was Rylie's father, hands on his hips with a big grin on his face.
"Lunch is ready!"
The afternoon went slowly and then it was time for me to go home. I didn't want to leave, but I didn't want to suffocate Rylie by staying. I wasn't going to be that kind of boyfriend.
Besides, it's not like we didn't talk. We stayed up until morning texting, but then I told her she needed to get some sleep. As pathetic as it sounded, I didn't sleep a wink. I was way too excited for school in the morning.
I didn't manage to see her for the entire morning, which sucked majorly. But then I saw her at lunch, walking past the classroom I'd just come out of.
"Hey Rylie," I drawled, kissing her on the cheek before falling into step beside her. I knew her position on PDAs so that was all I did.
"How was physics?" She asked, surprising me with her knowledge of my timetable. I screwed my face up and was about to respond with boring and way too easy, but then the chick Rylie had given my number to appeared.
"Hey guys!" She exclaimed, her voice way too high for her own good. "What's happening?"
Rylie was about to say something but I cut her off. "I'm just walking my girlfriend to her locker," I grinned, smiling at said girlfriend with amusement. I had to try not to emphasise the word girlfriend, cause she'd probably hit me.
Of course there had to be more bimbos today, but I either responded to them in the same way or just walked right past.
"Hey guys!" And then Brooklyn showed up. I usually had a relative tolerance for this girl because she used to be part of the group but now I didn't have to pretend anymore.
"Brooklyn," Rylie greeted, much more polite than I would have expected. "What's up?"
"Well it seems like you lied about you and Max." This confused me for a few reasons. Mostly it was her upfront honesty. The other part was that her and Rylie had talked about me before. What?
"Yeah well it seems like you lied about moving on from him," she smiled her perfectly fake smile. Brooklyn took a step back in shock. I had to keep my laugh in.
"You are such a bitch. I can not believe-"
"I don't actually care what you think I am," Rylie cut her off, not even seeming mad. Just over Brooklyn's bullshit. "I just care that you are in our way and I want to go see our friends."
"Oh em gee. You did not just say that."
"Yeah, actually, I did. Could you move?" She held her ground so Rylie just grabbed my arm and we walked around her. Then Rylie winced, stopping walking and putting her hand to her head. Fuck. That wasn't good.
"Are you okay?" I asked, taking her hand in mine.
"Yeah," she brushed off. I hated when she lied. "I'm fine."
She was quiet all through lunch and every so often, her hand would go to her temple. It was subtle, but I was watching her like a hawk.
After school I followed her home on my bike, worried out of my mind. She'd hardly said two words when I'd proposed to hang out after school. It wasn't like her at all.
I jumped off my bike as soon as it was stopped, jogging across to the car where she was heading to the door. She didn't seem to register anything, and I was contemplating calling her father. He was at work.
"Rylie," I said just after she unlocked the door. "Something's wrong. What is it?"
Her lips parted but nothing came out. She paused, a frown creasing her face and then it happened.
Her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she started to fall. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
I caught her before her head hit the ground, then lowered her to it. I ripped my phone out of my jeans and called the ambulance, then her father.
Everything was a blur, from Rylie passing out to Brian getting home to the ride to the hospital. Then she was wheeled down a sterile white hallway and I couldn't follow. Everyone was rushing. Everyone was running around her trying to get a hand on her or do something.
They disappeared behind a corner and I stopped.
I felt a hand on my shoulder, and faintly heard the words; "All we can do is wait."

A/N: I'll edit later. Or I won't. Idk. But really guys, help me out. Epilogue. Do I do the same Epilogue but in Rylie's POV OR do I change it and do something else? I won't update until I have some answers, as cruel as that is! *insert macho evil villain laugh*. Let me know what you want x
