Chapter Three : Promises
I leaned my head even lower, letting my long hair completely cover my face, concealing the tears that come daily.
How long has it been since they came in... A week? A month?
I can't remember.
I looked up at the dark panel through my strands of hair and grimanced.
Another day, spent looking at that panel. Another day, spent questioning my existence.
Why am I here?
Why was I born?
Why do they hate me?
I suppose I'll never get the answer to any of my questions.
I screamed on the inside.
I hate them!
I hate them!
I hate all of them!
I tried to slow my rapid breathing. If they see any sigh of life they'll get curious. They'll experiment on me more often.
In a matter of seconds, my breathing was back to normal. I've learned to control it quite well over time.
Then I remembered my life before these walls.
I remembered the rain falling down out my window. I remembered the smell of cigarette smoke from my uncles cheap tobacco.
I remember a small flower pot by the windowsill in the kitchen, which held one tulip.
I remember my old yarn doll, Mari-chan.
Why are all these memories coming to me now? After I've worked so hard to keep them shut up in a box in my heart, all it took was a mental scream to make them rush out like a flood.
I'm this weak?
No, wait. I'm not weak.
I'm strong. I'm one of the few in here that haven't cracked right?
I still have my mind.
It's the one thing I have left that they haven't taken away from me. And believe me they've tried.
That's right. I have to stay strong.
So, that one day I can escape from here, with Lucy. So I can rip them to shreds.
Then I heard a loud bang.
Hmm. What's that?
One of the others acting up?
Bad decision sister.
Another bang. Even louder.
If they're this defiant, then maybe...
"Hello? " I called out.
"Yona! " I heard Lucy yell.
"Huh? Lucy? Are you the one making all that noise? " I said.
"Break your chains, Yona! "
"Wait, what are you talking about? If I do that they'll punish me. " I said.
"They won't. I promise. They're all dropping like flies at the moment. "
My head jerked upright.
S-She got out?
We're escaping together!
I quickly used my vectors to cut my chains and tried to stand up.
I immediately fell to the ground though.
Ugh. I haven't used my legs in so long...
Then I had an idea.
I used two of my vectors to hold me upright and ran towards the door.
Shit! It's locked, of course.
"Lucy! I broke the chains but I can't open the door! "
I tried splitting it open with my vectors but it didn't work.
Why won't it work!
"Don't worry. I'm coming for you. " she said.
Lucy's coming for me! I'll finally be able to see her!
I heard the sound of crunching metal as the door in front of me burst open.
I closed my eyes and deflected any flying debris with my secondary arms.
Then I opened them to see... Lucy!
Pink hair like mine.
I rushed forward and hugged her.
She awkwardly hugged back.
"Lucy... " I croaked out.
My voice isn't really used to speaking.
"Yona." she said.
I looked up to see her face that was covered by a metal helmet.
So, I still can't see her face...
I broke away from her and grabbed her hand.
Since my real voice wasn't really working, I decided to use my mental voice to speak.
"We're finally escaping! " I shouted, excitly.
"Yes. " she said.
We started walking, hand in hand.
"Lucy, why do you think I couldn't open the door like you? "
"Your vectors aren't strong enough. They're longer than mine but not stronger." she said.
My vectors are weaker than Lucys?
I wonder why?
We kept walking and walking until we made it to a bunch of guards standing in front of a large locked metal door.
"Stop right there! " one of them shouted.
Lucy turned her head slightly my way.
"Yona, you can take the left. I'll take the right. " she said.
"Okay." I said.
Then I let them lose. I looked to the demon inside of me and said take over.
She happily agreed.
Soon, the entire room was covered in dripping, pooling, dark blood. I noticed one of them trying to hide under the body of one of his friends and pretend to be dead.
I can smell your fear...
I grabbed him by his neck and hoisted him into the air, letting his feet aimlessly frail around.
Then I crushed his heart and threw his blood stained corpse onto the pile of his fellow dead comrades.
"Finished. " I said.
"Good. " was all Lucy said back.
Then she ripped the door apart and we continued walking.
After we had ventured through countless hallways and doors we were met with yet another blockade of guards. This time though, there was a man in a suit amongst the crowd, unlike the others in protective gear.
I wonder who he is...
"Lucy, what do we do? " I asked.
"Get behind me. We're waiting for an opportunity. There's more of them here than before. More bullets. More chances for them to get a hit in. " she said.
I moved behind her.
I wanted to be in front of her, protecting her.
If they hurt Lucy, it don't care how many rounds enter my body, I'll kill them all.
Then, from out of nowhere, a girl fell face first right in front of Lucy.
The coffee she was carrying spilt all over the floor, staining it brown.
"Oh, umm... I'm so sorry...uh....." she said.
The man in the suit yelled for her to get out of the way and to get away from us.
But it was too late for her.
Lucy had already decapitated her, letting her blood spew over the brown coffee spilled on the floor.
I instinctively grabbed onto Lucy, suddenly scared that the guards would hurt the girl who was like a sister to me. I knew I wasn't protecting her any but, at least I felt like I was which made me happy.
The man in the suit yelled, "Fire! " and Lucy immediately used the girls body to shield us from the bullets flying our way.
"Yona, I want you to run. " she said.
"Wait, run? What about you? I thought we were escaping together. " I said.
"We won't be able to survive together. I've thought long and hard about this and I've decided that the best way to ensure you live, is to let you leave me alone. " she said.
"But.... I promised I wouldn't leave you behind." I said.
"Live alone or die together. Take your pick. " she said.
I don't want to.
I really don't want to.
But if this is what she truly wants then, I'll do it.
"Okay. I-I'll do it. I promise I'll make you proud Lucy. " I said.
I could imagine her smiling at me.
"I'm already proud, Yona. Now, the second I drop this body - run. Get out of here. One day we'll meet again." she said.
"I'll search for you. " I said.
Then it happened.
As soon as she dropped the coffee girl, I ran. I ran as fast as I could, ripping apart bodies that I passed into shreds.
I won't let Lucy's promise be for nothing.
Like Lucy had predicted, all the guards were busy going after her since she's the stronger one.
I'm sure that a good number are still chasing after me though.
Then I saw my chance.
I ripped open one of the doors in the office I was running by and entered it searching for my escape route.
There it is. The window.
I prepared myself mentally and broke through the window with my vectors and jumped outside into the water below.
I'll find you again, Lucy.
I promise.
I'll never break the bonds of sisterhood we share.
