Chapter 6

While at our campsite for tonight, because for some reason Zuko thought it was better to hide out in a cave rather than bunk for the night in a hotel, or inn, or whatever they have in this world.

"Can't we just find another one of those traveller stops?" I asked in annoyance. "I'm tired of caves."

"No, we can't. Because Uncle can't go to one without a massage, and those cost money. Money that we don't have!" Zuko exclaimed with the same level of irritation.

"Then why don't you go make some for us." I laid down on the ground, trying to ignore Uncle's snoring.

"Why do I have to do the work? Why can't you? I'm royalty, you should be doing the work, peasant!" Zuko attempted to refrain from yelling.

"Because I'm a girl and you're the man of the house... er, cave. Doesn't this world have men be in charge, or something?" I was honestly just too lazy to go work, but I wasn't going to admit that.

"No. That's not how it works here. Is that how it works in your world?"

"No... Not in my country, at least. I just thought that it might of been how things work here..."

"Well, that isn't how it works in my country, either. You can go work. I'm royalty and you are not, so if anyone is going to work, it'll be you." I rolled my eyes. I wasn't going to lose an argument to him.

"Last I checked, you're just a banished fugitive. I'm pretty sure that's the opposite of royalty, so you're in an even worse position than I am. You go work!" I cringed at my own words.

"Sorry, Zuko. That was out of line." He nodded silently in acceptance. We both know that things can get a little out of hand when we argue. We both tend to let it roll off our shoulders.

I smiled mischieviously. "But you still get to go to work!"

"No, I'm not. I don't need pampering like you do. It's not my fault you're too weak to handle being in the wild." I glared.

"I just want a bed to sleep on. Uncle's the one who needs pampering." I laughed slightly, while Zuko simply smirked in agreement. I sat up with an idea.

"Alright. I'll make you a deal, Zuko. If you can beat me at Rock, Paper, Scissors, I'll work, but if I win, you get a job." He tilted his head slightly to one side.

"What's Rock, Paper, Scissors?" He questioned. I rolled my eyes once more, with an amused smirk. Boy, did these people have a lot to learn.

☆¤☆¤☆

After briefly explaining the game, he had the gist of it.

"Okay, ready?" I asked with a competitive smirk. I'm amazing at this. He nodded in concentration."We'll play 2 out of 3. Rock, Paper, Scissors, SHOOT!" I showed scissors, he showed paper.

"I win!" I smiled.

"Not yet, you haven't. I still get another go." I rolled my eyes and we began again.

"Rock, Paper, Scissors, SHOOT!" I showed paper, but he was somehow one step ahead. He showed scissors.

"One more time! Rock, Paper, Scissors, SHOOT!" I went random, and did rock, but he had paper.

"I win." He mocked. "You get to work."

"I can't believe I lost to a newbie. I never lose that game." I fake glared at him.

"Or, perhaps, you could both get a job." Iroh suggested suddenly. I jumped at his sudden consciousness.

"I thought you were asleep." I asked.

"I was, until your arguing awoke me. If you two are always like this when I'm asleep, I don't know how I sleep through it." He laughed playfully.

"Sorry, Uncle." I apologized, with a slight cringe at my actions.

"It's quite alright, Eden." He laughed heartily.

"Hey, Zuko. If you go get the food this time. I'll do it next time. Please? I'm too comfortable to get up right now, and I'm hungry." I smiled innocently at him.

He grunted in annoyance, but didn't argue. He got up and left for food. "Thanks!" I called after him, with a laugh.

Iroh rose an eyebrow, but decided to leave whatever it was be.

"Uncle, can I ask you a possibly personal question?" I was suddenly serious.

"I suppose, but I thought you knew everything about us?" He laughed, obviously trying to lighten the mood.

I smiled. "Yeah, but this a bit more to do with me." I sighed. "When I... watched you guys, I didn't exist in the story.

"In this story, I had no place, but that's not important. What I want to know, is why did you react the way you did, when Zuko chose my name?

"Certainly, it wasn't jealousy." He looked at me sadly. I just touched a nerve.

"I'm shocked you did not know of her. Then again, she disappeared a long time ago. Her name was Aiko, and she disappeared when she was three." Iroh continued solemnly.

He had just caught my attention. "Tell me more about her. Who was she? How did you know her?"

"She was Azula's twin sister. Identical twin, to be precise. There was a big difference in personality, though.

"Azula had always been the one to treat everyone rudely, but Aiko had definitely taken after her mother.

"Even at a young age, she and Zuko had gotten along very well. The worst day for her mother and I, though, had been her third birthday.

"Everything was all well and normal until about midday. That's when her mother came to me with tears in her eyes.

"I asked her what the matter was, and she explained that she had disappeared from in front of her eyes. One second she was playing happily, and the next she wasn't there.

"We spent weeks searching the capital city, but eventually gave up. No one really mentioned it or talked about it afterwards.

"I had almost forgotten of her existence until Zuko said something." Iroh finished sadly. He almost sounded guilty.

"Uncle, you don't think...? And what about Zuko? What made him think of that name?" I wanted answers, and I wanted them now.

He only shook his head. "I do not know, Eden. Why don't you talk to Zuko when he gets back?"

"I think I will. Thank you, Uncle." I smiled and turned to look out the door, waiting for Zuko's return.

Uncle spoke up once more. "Whatever made you start calling me Uncle?"

"I don't know. It was after you and Zuko had that disagreement. I noticed how he treated you, and I didnt approve. When I went to talk to him, he blew up at me, and said I was as bad as 'Uncle'.

"In my anger, I turned and told him that was a compliment. I really was as bad as 'Uncle', and walked out. I guess it just sort of stuck." I shrugged.

"I'm not so sure. Now, it's only a guess, but I believe that your emotions had been very strong in that moment and may have temporarily unlocked forgotten memories."

"Wouldn't that be a turn of events? I used to try and convince my Mom that you guys were my family, and if you really were? That'd simply be ironic."

Our conversation silenced for about five minutes, until a thought occurred to me. "Would that explain my dream?"

I had asked it more to myself, but Iroh heard me anyways. "What dream?"

I sighed. "It's nothing really. It just scared me.

"I'd be sitting in my living room watching your... story. When it begins to glow, I get up to inspect it. By the time I turn back around, mom was replaced by Ozai, Zuko, and his mom.

"They were asking why I couldn't recognize them, and then they faded into darkness replaced by Azula smirking at me saying something about me being mother's favorite or something." I decided to leave out the last part of the dream, since Iroh didn't need to worry about anymore than what he already had to.

"It's a very high possibility, but I can't be certain. Like I said, speaking to my nephew may help." He smiled. He seemed hopeful.

Although, if I realized that a family member that I had once presumed dead was alive, I'd be hopeful, too.

Our conversation fell into comfortable silence, until Zuko returned. "Did you actually manage to get something this time?" I teased.

"Yes, I did. We have some fish." My eyes widened in horror. "My worst nightmare. More fish!"

"Stop complaining and eat." Zuko rolled his eyes. "It's this or nothing, unless you want to go get your own food."

The two of them quickly cooked their fish, but I sat there with just a small pathetic flame barely hot enough to burn me.

"Alright, I'm tired of this. Can I get some training? I should have asked earlier, but I never really thought about it. I'm not much help, until I can learn to use my abilities." I burst suddenly. I stared in anger at my hand.

"If you wish, we can start tomorrow morning." Iroh agreed.

I was internally dancing, but too busy wanting to eat to say anything. I don't like, nor want fish, but I'm starving.

☆¤☆¤☆

The next morning, I woke up with anticipation. I spent all my time wanting to be a firebender, and now it was a reality.

To me, Firebending had always been the most intriguing to me. I had no idea why, it just was.

Well, I suppose that I now know that it was because I was one, but that's beside the point.

I woke up a little past sunrise, surprisingly, considering the fact that I like to sleep in.

An even bigger surprise was when I found Uncle Iroh awake and drinking tea. He was always the last to get up.

I rose an eyebrow at him. "Is there a reason you're up so early, Uncle?"

"I could ask the same of you. I know you like to sleep." He smiled as he took another sip of his tea.

"I'm just excited. I can never sleep when I'm excited. I remember I was the exact same way when I first got to go to Disney. It was on my 9th birthday, I was so excited." I clapped my hands together to get myself back on track.

"So why are you up so early?"

He placed his tea down. "I find that learning Firebending is best early in the morning for beginners. So, shall we begin?"

I nodded my head vigorously. "We shall!"

"Let's begin."

☆¤☆¤☆

We stood in a clearing.

"Firebending is the element of power. Unlike the other elements, fire will drive forward, even without the bender, consuming whatever is in its path.

"This is why it is vital for firebenders to first learn self control. Our first excercise will consist of stopping a fire, rather than creating one."

I stood there, still excited. I nodded my head in understanding.

"Before we go on, I need you to assume a solid horse stance. Do you know what that is?" He asked.

I shrugged. "Sort of. I've seen people use them." I attempted to mimic the stance I saw Aang use when he was with Jeong Jeong.

"Close. You need to keep your back straight and feet spread wider." I did as I was told.

He made some minor adjustments for me. "Perfect. Now I want you to concentrate on the heat of the sun. Firebenders are at their most powerful during the day, so to be at your full potential at all times, concentrate on its heat."

I closed my eyes and allowed the feeling of the newly risen sun to soak into my skin.

"Very good. Now while you do that-" He grabbed a leaf that was falling in front of his face. "I want you to concentrate on keeping the flames from reaching the edge of this leaf as long as possible."

He handed me the smouldering leaf, and I did as I was told. As disappointed as I was that I wasn't making fire, I did as I was told.

I imagined the heat of the leaf was as far away from me as possible. It seemed to be working.

I was controlling fire! As little as it was, and I didn't actually create it, it was still exciting.

I kept it from the edges for a good hour before it got the better of me. I may or may not have lost concentration a couple of times, but hey, I tried.

It was then, that Zuko woke up. "Are you training?" He wondered groggily.

"Well, I was, but I think Uncle went back to sleep." I laughed.

Zuko, still in his tired state, wiped the sleep from his eyes and chuckled lightly. "Of course he did."

He stood up and walked towards me. "If you'd like, I could show you some basic Firebending techniques?" He offered.

"No offense, but I'd rather learn from Uncle. I mean he taught you everything you know, so he can teach me. If you really want to help, you could go get another leaf. I think I got it this time."

He shrugged and grabbed a leaf and lit it for me. "Learning self-control?"

I nodded, as I continued to concentrate.

"I'm shocked he didn't teach you breathing first." He laughed.

"Please, it's in through the nose and out through the mouth. That's not a very hard concept." I scoffed, without losing concentration.

"That's what I told Uncle. Turns out meditating really does wonders for learning that concept." He added with a thoughtful look.

"Would you like to join me later? We don't have any candles, but I think we can manage."

"Take the time to learn to breathe. Someday we're going under." I began to sing, before stopping to answer him. "Yeah, I'd like that."

Zuko looked at me weirdly. "What were you singing?"

"It's a song by the band Thousand Foot Krutch. It's called 'Learn to Breathe'." I shrugged. I've managed a conversation while concentrating on this leaf. I think I'm doing pretty good.

"Does your world have a song for everything? That seems to be a pretty weird thing to sing about."

I thought about it for a second. "Yeah, I think we do. I mean there's a song about the name of a meat."

He rose an eyebrow in amusement. "Do I want to hear it?"

"Possibly. It goes like this, 'My bologna has a first name, it's O-s-c-a-r. My bologna has a second it's M-a-y-e-r. Oh, I love to eat it everyday, and if ask me while I'll sa- a- ay. Oscar Mayer has a way with B-o-l-o-g-n-a."

"That... was the weirdest thing I've ever heard. I'm pretty sure the majority of it was made up words." He noted.

"It turns out it's a name. So I suppose it could have been made up." I agreed.

"Conversations with you have a hard time of staying normal." He laughed. "You say some of the strangest things."

"Back in my world, I'd constantly be making references to works of fiction that no one ever got, so people in my world said the exact same thing. I guess I'm just naturally odd."

"I'm not going argue with that." He smirked.

"You better be glad I'm currently trying to control a flame, or else you'd have a fist connected to your face, right now." I growled.

He laughed, causing me to do the same. That was when I finally lost concentration, and the leaf was burnt.

"Oh, come on, Zuko! I was doing so good!" I glared at him. I smirked and punched his shoulder as hard as I could.

"Ow! What was that for?!" He whined.

"I'm not concentrating on the leaf anymore and it's your fault. If you hadn't gone out of character and laughed, that wouldn't of happened."

"So you'd rather me be angry?" He questioned with a raised eyebrow.

"That would be more like you." I laughed, as he glowered at me.

"And you call me rude."

"Hey, Zuko. Completely off topic, but could you answer a question really quick?"

He nodded for me to continue, intrigued. He knew that I love to annoy him, so if I change the topic off an argument, it must be important.

"Where'd you come up with my name? What made you think of Aiko?"

He shrugged. "It sounded good. I heard it once, a long time ago. I thought it suited you."

Now I was intrigued. "Where'd you hear the name?"

"It was at my grandfather's funeral. They basically said I had a sister named Aiko. They also said that she was deceased.

"When I went to my father for an answer, he said nothing. The name became an enigma. You reminded me of the name, being a mystery, and all." I looked down in thought.

"Do you know what the name means, Eden?" He asked suddenly. I shook my head 'No'.

"It means 'Beloved Child'. I wondered why no one would want to talk about someone who was so beloved. It only added to the mystery."

"Hey, Zuko... Uncle thinks that I might be the supposedly dead sister." He looked at me in mixture of disbelief and bewilderment.

"He told me that she was Azula's identical twin." I gestured to how I look. "That's not the only similarity. He also said she disappeared from right underneath her mother's view on her third birthday."

He thought about it for second. "That does seem very strange. I'm not sure."

I thought for a second, before continuing. "The thing is, in my world, golden eyes are very rare. I've never met anyone else with naturally golden eyes, and yet here I am.

"What if it's because I'm not from that world? What I'm of Fire Nation decent? Specifically speaking, Great- granddaughter of Firelord Sozin."
