Chapter 2
One week has passed since I was put into this freezing cell. The only thing allowing me to keep my sanity was studying the area outside of my cell... and singing. I had once asked for a quill and parchment (Pen and paper), but they said no.
"Why not?" I had asked. "What am I going to do; send a letter to people I'm not in contact with?"
They didn't answer me, of course, but I thought it was funny. I looked out the cell door once again and noticed the across the hall was a tube-like tunnel. It looked very familiar, but I couldn't place where from.
I slid down the cell wall in boredom. I have already studied the entire area outside my cell like twenty times, and surprise, surprise: it hasn't changed at all. I've also been constantly asking if Aang had been here yet. He kept telling me that the Avatar was dead. Like that was true.
It was times like this when I started singing. One song in particular stuck out to me in this situation: The End is Where We Begin by Thousand Foot Krutch.
"I'm an alien
Cuz I'm not of this world
I have a name
but I've been changed, and now I can't stay the same
and I'm a loser if that means I've been lost before
but now I found it, I'm surrounded
Cuz you can hear the way it sounded
Like angels singing with a million voices-"
The song was cut off when the chief walked up to my cell. Did I mention that I'm also the only prisoner here? It wasn't enough to put me with other criminals, I was a prisoner of a war that I wasn't even apart of. He walked by my cell daily, so his presence didn't exactly shock me. He was kind of reminding me of Zhao at the moment. Though I feel like I'd get myself killed if I said that aloud.
"How did you know?" That's all he said. I wanted to scoff. Like I'm supposed to know what he's talking about.
"Know what, sir?" Yes, I still call him sir. I was brought up to respect my elders and that's something I like to stick to.
"That the Avatar would come here. Everyone thought he was dead, let alone think he'd be here. So, tell me. How did you know?"
I immediately sprung up with excitement and jumped onto my feet and sprinted to the door. "Aang is here?!"
Chief Arnook rose an eyebrow. "You're on a first name basis with the Avatar?"
"I told you that this place was a story, didn't I? I know him, but he doesn't know me." I stated it as though it were obvious (Which I'm pretty sure is the case). "Please, let me go see him! Maybe he can help... Then again Sokka might not be too keen on the outfit." I looked down at the clothes I've been wearing for a week.
"You seem to know about the two. I still can't let you go up there. It's not safe for the rest of us." His face hardened slightly.
"Have some guards with me, or something. I need to see him. I know he's here to learn waterbending, but I need to ask him a few questions- Wait, you think I'm dangerous? I supposedly used firebending against Han, and that's why I'm being treated like I were Oazi or something. Even if I did use firebending, I'm nothing compared to the rest of you. I didn't even know I could firebend!"
"Lies. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a celebration to prepare for tonight." He began to walk away, but now I was desperate.
"Wait, I need to warn you of something big." That seemed to get his attention.
"What is it?" He sounded annoyed.
"The Fire Nation is going to be here in a few days. A crazed man is after the Avatar and he's going to follow him here. I don't know the exact time until then, but it will be within the next few weeks. I thought it would be a good idea to warn you. Please let me talk to him. It could be important!"
He sighed. "Very well. You can speak to him, but I cannot let you out. I'll have someone escort him and his friends down here." He finally walked out of my line of sight and back to whatever he was doing.
Finally, here would be my chance to gain someone's trust. I could really use the Avatar's help, even if he is just a twelve-year-old airbending prodigy. That's when my anxiety started to kick in.
What if he didn't trust me? What if no one actually takes interest in my predicament? What if he ends up thinking that I'm no better than anyone in the Fire Nation? What if I can't get him to believe I'm not from the Fire Nation? I mean my naturally pale skin and golden eyes don't exactly help, that and the Fire Nation armor I'm wearing.
I need to calm down. I'm not going to get anywhere with 'What if' questions. I need to stay positive. I slowed my breathing and waited for him to enter.
I heard a quad of footsteps coming down the hall, so I figured it was the trio and their escort. I ran up to the cell and waited for them.
The first thing that I noticed was the skeptical looks on their faces before they could even see me. This might not go very well.
I could hear them speaking.
"If we need to speak to this person so badly; why are they in a cell?" That had to be Sokka. Oh dear. He's going to be the hardest to convince.
The rest of the conversation stopped when they reached my cell and could see me. "Oh." Sokka's face hardened at the sight of me, along with everyone else's.
I quickly scrambled to my feet and greeted them with that respectful bow I learned by watching the show way too much. "Avatar Aang, Sokka, and Katara. It's a pleasure to meet you three."
Sokka, being himself, was the first one to speak. "Who are you, and how do you know who we are?"
I sighed. "You know, just because I look Fire Nation doesn't mean I'm the enemy. In reality, I'm not even from there..." I stopped trying to speak as I saw their disbelieving faces.
"You still haven't answered his questions." Katara growled. I knew she would be the angriest of the three, considering what had happened to her mother all those years ago.
"Look, my name is Eden Cartwright. I was adopted into my current family when I was 2, so I don't know where I'm really from." Katara raised a brow, while Sokka and Aang looked skeptical.
"That doesn't exactly tell us where your from. Where is your current family located?" Aang inquired. I sighed. Here came the hard part.
"I don't think you'll believe me." I mutter, looking to the ground.
Sokka scoffed. "He's the Avatar. Weird things happen to us all the time, I don't think there's anything that I'm not willing to believe."
I rose an eyebrow in amusement. "Is that a challenge?" He nodded confidently.
I smirked. "Alright, here goes. I come from another world where you and your entire world is a story shown to kids through the means of moving drawings. In my world, I had dressed up as... someone of the Fire Nation for a costume contest- which I won- but on the way home in our car, I fell asleep and the next thing I knew I was falling to the snowy ground of the Northern Water Tribe. I know who you are because, as I said, you're a story... that I happen to know about. You were saying?"
Katara and Sokka looked to be in complete and utter shock and disbelief, while Aang, to my surprise, looked to be more thoughtful of what I said.
"Fire Nation lies. That's all that is." Sokka glared.
"I may not be from the Fire Nation, but I do know about their arrogance, so why would I know about the names of you? Especially, Sokka and Katara. I bet they don't even care about Aang's name and he's the Avatar for Pete's sake!"
Katara looked confused. "Who's Pete?"
"It's a saying from where I'm from." I chuckled. They are so clueless...
"I believe you." We all turned our attention to Aang, who had now decided to speak up.
"I'm sorry, I don't think I heard you right, Aang. Did you just say you believe her?" Sokka almost seemed outraged. I didn't like the sound of it.
"Yeah. There was a bit of talk between the monks about the possibility of other worlds. The evidence seems to exist in her favor." Aang explained. I smiled at his words. Leave it to the monks to believe that.
I looked at them hopefully. "You'll help me get out?"
"No, not so fast. There still the matter of why you're in there." He rushed. "So, why are you in there?" I sighed, but complied.
"They thought I was a threat, because of the way I look. And then they accused me of burning Han with firebending, even though I know for a fact I can't, because bending doesn't exist in my world..." I rolled my eyes at nothing in particular.
"I've been stuck in here a week because I can't convince them I'm not a Fire Nation spy-"
"Well, you sure could've fooled me." Sokka scoffed.
"Sokka, if I were a spy on a single person mission, don't you think I would've dressed in clothes that didn't raise suspicion. I'm from another world, I'm not stupid."
Katara seemed hesitant. "She does have a point."
"No, she doesn't! She probably dressed like that to be able to pull that card. I'm not falling for it." I felt anger rise with his stubbornness.
"Don't you dare ever affiliate me with that low-down, no-good, Fire Brat. I've been listening to this for about a week. He is a heartless thug who had no problem... Doing what he did." I want sure if they knew about Zuko's scar having something to do with his father. I didn't want to spoil anything for them.
By the end of my rant I noticed that their faces looked terrified. "What is it?" Their gazes were on my hand. I looked down and noticed a small flame hovering over my fist. Being the graceful person I am, I screamed and shook my hand repeatedly, trying to shake it off. It worked.
I let out a sigh of relief. "You were saying about not being able to firebend?" I could hear the smirk in his voice, as I stared wide-eyed at my hand. "There's no way that happened...
"That is physically impossible. How did that happen? I can't be a bender!" I began to panic.
"It's alright. Calm down. We can figure this out together. We can't break you out, but I'll try talking to the chief." Aang consoled. He was going to help me! I nearly leapt for joy.
"Okay, assuming that she really is good, and the Chief doesn't let her out. What will we do?" Katara cut in.
Aang thought for a moment, then shrugged. "We'll wait until we're about to leave, then break her out then."
I smiled, then frowned. "There's one other thing. If you're here, then Zhao is already planning to attack the water tribe. I can't tell you when exactly, because I don't know. But I hope that you'll be prepared. When he does, can you get me out then? I want to help you guys. I already know what he's planning... For the most part. I can help."
Sokka seemed uncertain. "Why would you want to help us, and why do you know what he's planning?"
"I told you, you guys are a story that I already know the outcome of. I know your future." I explained, before mumbling under my breath, "I hope."
Sokka's eyes gleamed mischievously. "So, your on our side, and you'll always be two steps ahead?"
"Yeah... I guess."
"I think I'm starting to like you, Eden." He smirked.
I rolled my eyes. "Thanks, Sokka. I feel ever so loved."
Just then a voice was heard down the hall. Aang looked back at me. "I'm sorry, the party is waiting for us, so we have to go."
"That's alright. You guys go enjoy yourselves, I'll be fine down here. As long as you guys bring me back something to eat." I smiled. "Oh, and Sokka? Try not to make a fool of yourself tonight. You tend to in front of girls." I sent a knowing smirk to a bewildered and flustered looking Sokka.
They stood there for a few more confused moments, before I waved them off. "Go! You have a party to attend to!"
I watched them walk off down the hall and off to wherever the feast was to be held. I let my mind wander to wherever it felt like going to, and I couldn't help but think of the events of this episode. Sokka would fall for a princess who is engaged to the snob that I first met and then dies by the end of the siege.
Katara will fight a master that refuses to train her and find out that he loved her grandmother, Kana. She would then master waterbending.
Zuko would lose his entire crew and then nearly lose his life to Admiral idiot- I mean Zhao.
I slide back down the wall to the side of the front of the cell. This was going to be a long week.

I awoke from the sleep that I had fallen into the night before. It's been a week since the night Aang and his friends arrived. The siege should be coming up very soon.
I noticed that the chief wasn't making his normal rounds through this area and none of Team Avatar have been here, yet. Since the first night, I've been talking to them every day. Aang was fun to talk to, Sokka had a very similar sense of humor to me, Katara was awesome and showed me a few of the bending moves she learned. They were great.
But, today was just too quiet. They were here. I've spent the past week meditating and trying to to learn basic firebending using the advice Iroh told Zuko on the show. I'm now thankful that I watched way too much of the show.
Take that mom! You always told me to watch less of the show, and now not listening to you is paying off. I get why she wouldn't want me to watch it so much, it isn't healthy to be that obsessed over something, and I don't think she expected this to ever happen.
I waited for one of them ot let me out. They should be here soon.
Mere minutes later, Katara came sprinting down the hallway. "Eden! We need to get going! They're here! The Fire Nation is here!" She ran up to my cell door and forced it down with water bending.
"Finally! I was getting bored in there! Let's go fight some Firebenders!" We ran down the corridor and made our way onto a balcony overlooking the entire tribe. I saw Aang and the chief overlooking the edge into the vastness of the sea right beyond the snow-laden border of the city.
"The stillness before battle is unbearable. Such a quiet dread." The Chief spoke to the Avatar. The boy looked down in determination and sorrow. Katara and I joined them.
"I wasn't there when the Fire Nation attacked my people. I'm going to make a difference this time." He stood up and looked to the sky.

We had positioned ourselves on lookout on the front wall of the city. I repeatedly got strange looks from the warriors, looking as though I belonged in the Fire Nation. I simply ignored them. We waited in anticipation, until a fireball came hurtling toward us.
The force from the impact of the wall right below us sent me, Sokka, Katara, and a few of the soldiers hurtling towards the ground in a heap of snow. I got covered in snow, so I melted the snow on top of me, and jumped back out.
I heard Sokka calling for Katara and I. She must have been covered as well. I ran over to help him look for her, but just then she waterbends the snow from on top of her. Sokka and I help her back to her feet.

Sokka had gone to help with the warriors and Katara and I held refuge on the balcony of the main palace. The sun was going down, and I knew that meant the attack would stop until daybreak. We stood there when a girl with snow white hair, which I recognized as Princess Yue, came running up to us. I looked at her with sad eyes. I knew she were to die within the next two days.
"Katara, I- Who are you?" She looked at me in curiosity.
"It's alright, Princess Yue. She's with us." Katara came to my aid.
I held out my hand for her to shake, which she didn't take. I looked at her curiously and she did the same. Instead, I coughed awkwardly and decided to bow instead. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Princess."
She smiled. "Any friend of the Avatar is welcome."
We watched as the Fire Nation continued attacking the city. Suddenly, the onslaught ceased. "They've stopped attacking." Yue pointed out in relief.
That's when I caught sight of Aang flying back down on Appa. "Aang!" Katara and I exclaimed, and the three of us ran over to him as he slid onto the ground.
"I can't do it." He whispered. "I can't do it."
"What happened?" Katara asked.
"I must have taken out a dozen Fire Navy ships, but there's just too many of them! I can't fight them all." He looked away in what looked like shame.
"But you must: you're the Avatar!" Yue pleaded.
"I understand that you're distressed, and he may be the Avatar, but he's still only one kid." I explained.
Katara and I placed a hand on the sullen Avatar.
☆¤☆¤☆
"The legends say that the moon was the first waterbender. Our ancestors saw how it pushed and pulled the tides and learned to do it themselves." Yue explained as looked to the moon. By this time we had moved to another balcony in the palace.
"I always noticed my waterbending is stronger at night." Katara realized.
"Our strength comes from the spirit of the moon, our life comes from the spirit of the ocean. They work together to keep balnce." Yue continued. I decided not to interfere with this conversation, since not only was I not a waterbender, but I wasn't even from this world! I couldn't read or write their language, I just found out I was capable of firebending for the first time a week ago.
Aang's eyes lit up with an idea. "The spirits!" He shot up with joy. "Maybe I can find them and get their help!"
"How can you do that?" Yue inquired.
"Aang is the bridge between this world and the Spirit world. He can contact them." I explained, finally speaking up.
"Maybe they can give you the wisdom to win this battle!" Yue piped up with hope.
"Or maybe they will unleash a crazy amazing spirit attack on the Fire Nation!" Aang offered with excitement. When he noticed the others' unimpressed looks, he backtracked. "Or... wisdom. Wisdom is good."
I snickered knowingly. "Or maybe both." I added under my breath.
"The only problem is, the last time Aang got to the spirit world was on accident. How is he going to get there this time?" I inquired. Katara gave me a questioning look, then shrugged it off.
"I have an idea. Follow me." She walked away, leaving us to follow.
After walking through the freezing cold temperatures, we came up to a small, round door. One I knew led to the Spirit Oasis.
"Is this the way to the Spirit World?" Aang asked questionably.
Yue laughed politely. "No, you'll have to get there on your own. I can take you to the most spiritual place in the entire North Pole." She opened the door, and Aang walked in, followed by me, Katara, then Yue.
Aang laughed and sprinted towards the center. The main part of it was a grassy island, in the middle of a small pond with a waterfall in the back. A couple of trees were in the back with an oriental style gate in the middle of them.
There was an even smaller pond was sitting toward the front of the small island, containing two koi fish designed as each of the sides of the Yin and Yang symbol.
"I never thought I'd miss grass this much!" Aang cheered as he laid down in the lush green grass.
Katara looked around in awe. "It's warm here. How is that possible?" She took off her Parka, leaving her in the typical clothes she'll be wearing next series.
"The Spirit Oasis is the center of all spiritual energy in the North Pole." Yue explained.
"Your right, I feel... something. It feels so tranquil." He sat down in front of the pond, sitting in his meditative position. He closed his eyes and began to meditate.
"Why is he sitting like that?" Yue questioned. I rolled my eyes. 'Why are you talking?'
"He's meditating, trying to cross over into the spirit world. It takes all of his concentration." Katara explained in a whisper. I could tell Aang was tensing up in frustration.
"Is there anything we can do to help?" Yue asked. That sent him over the edge.
"How about some quiet! Come on, guys! I can hear everything You're saying!" I rose my hands in mock defeat, before pointing at the other two. He rolled his eyes at me, with the smallest hint of a smile on his face and went back to meditating.
Almost immediately, his eyes and tattoos began to glow. Yue gasped. "Is he okay?"
"He's crossing over into the spirit world. He'll be fine as long as we don't move his body." Katara explained once more. "That's his way back to the physical world."
"Maybe we should get some help." Yue began to walk away, but Katara stopped her.
"No. He's my friend. I'm perfectly capable of protecting him." Cue Prince Drama Queen's dramatic entrance.
"Well, aren't you a big girl now." Katara's eyes widened in shock, while remained unamused. "No." She gasped.
"Yes." He countered. I rolled my eyes. "Hand him over and I won't have to hurt you." He had a fierce look of determination on his face.
"I swear. You and your drama. It's not going to happen like that." He looked at me in shock. "Azula?" A perfectly good idea came to my head when he said that. I sly smirk played across my face. Katara looked at me in shock and betrayal. She thought I lied to her. I sent her a wink and kept it up.
"Yes, dear brother. Who else would it be?" I need to lay low. As long as I don't try to firebend and show that I don't bend blue fire, I should be good. I was always quite the actress.
"What are you doing here?" He questioned in anger. He hates his sister and, honestly, I don't blame him. She's rude.
"I wanted to see you capture the Avatar, Zuzu." I didn't think before speaking, I act better on instinct, but I'm not Azula and this isn't some school play. He could seriously hurt me if I angered him. I don't think this'll turn out very good now. Great.
"Don't call me that!" He shouted. "What do you really want, Azula? I know you don't really care if I get the Avatar. Why are you here?"
"Very well. I came here to capture the Avatar myself." What am I doing?! He's going to kill me! His eyes narrowed in anger. "That won't happen." Without another word he began to shoot fire at me, rapidly.
I did everything in my power to block the attacks, but because I was self-taught, It wasn't working as well as I hoped. When a blast nearly hit me, Katara's face went enraged and she went on the offense.
She caught him off guard with her first attack, which gave her the advantage. She soon knocked him into the shallow edge of the overall pond and began to trap him in a sphere. I smiled. "Nice one, Katara!"
Zuko, however, was as angry as ever. "You little peasant. You found a master, haven't you?" I rolled my eyes.
"Is it really that obvious?" I asked with as much sarcasm as possible. He growled at me and blasted the icy sphere around him apart. He attacked Katara and I hid nearby. She would win.
And she did. She trapped him in a giant pillar of frozen water. I knew he would be fine, but for some reason I had to make sure he was okay. Before I could move, Katara looked to me. "You're his sister?!"
I walked over to her, so that I could talk to her without Zuko hearing the conversation. "No, I'm not. I just look and sound like his sister. I had always looked a lot like her, that's why I dressed as her for the costume party. When I found out after I arrived here, that I sounded like her too, it scared me at first, because she's crazy.
"In the spur of the moment, I decided to play with him... Not my best decision, but I had been bored in jail for two week, so I needed something to ease the boredom. The insults and sarcasm were natural... I'm like your brother."
"How do I know you're not lying?" She questioned, anger still lacing her voice.
"I guess you'll have to take my word for it. Well, that and her fire is blue while mine is the typical red..." She rose an eyebrow at the response.
"Blue... firebending, you say?" She asked. I nodded.
"She is a very powerful firebender. I really don't like it. She's insane, evil, and even though it pains me to say it, a genius. Evil and genius are two words that should never go together, but she managed and it's scary." Just as my words came to a close, the sun began to rise. I felt more energy than I had yet to have since arriving. I felt more... powerful.
I turned to the pond, but the next thing I heard was a yelp. I turned back around and saw Katara falling to the ground, unconscious. "Katara!" I screamed, but as I made my way to her I was cut off by Zuko striking me.
I had no way of blocking it in time and I was shrouded in darkness.
