Chapter 1

I was nervous. That was for sure. I don't often walk on stages in front of people- especially when they are the ones judging me.

Today, as I stood and waited for my cue to stand up on the stage, the butterflies were churning away at my insides.

The funny thing is, I'm not usually one to care about how others think of me. In my competitive spirit, on the other hand, I hated losing.

I've already been complimented on the work gone into my outfit multiple times, and have had many people tell me that there was no one who could possibly have a chance of winning against me. "That costume", I was told, "Has got to be the most believable out of anything I have ever seen. It's like you were made to play the part."

Dressing up as Azula for a costume contest was almost a no-brainer for me. I already looked almost exactly like the evil princess; which, to be honest, was kind of weird. Especially when considering the fact that she has golden-brown eyes. That was one of the only difference between us: while hers were totally light brown; mine had a bright gold starburst in the center of the iris.

"Number 24, you're up." My number. It was now or never. I walked up onto the stage and every convention attendee sat there, almost gawking at the outfit. The host of the panel looked to me, then back to the audience.

"Well, it seems we have royalty in our midst. Tell us about yourself. What's your name and how old are you?" The host handed me his microphone.

"Well, sir, my name is Eden Cartwright and I'm 14." To be honest, I didn't want to talk. I was way too nervous.

"14, you say? Where did you get the materials to do such a wonderful job looking like Princess Azula?" He poked the edge of the armor-like costume.

"I had it specially 3-D printed for the occasion." I was adamant about it being as accurate as possible, or else I wasn't happy.

"Alright, then. Let's hear it for Princess Azula, everyone!" The crowd roared as I stepped off the platform.

My escort to the convention walked up to me. Well, I like to call her my escort, when really she's my mom- sort of. Actually, she's my adoptive mom, but we really don't think of it like that.

She said that she found me outside her doorstep at the age of 2, so she took me in. There was no note or anything, so she named me herself. I love her like she really was my mom.

"Wonderful job, today. Come now, we need to head home." It was nearing 7:00 on the final day here, so I nodded and walked toward the door. One of the security people stopped me, whispering something in my mom's ear. She smiled and walked me back to the stage and let me walk back up.

As I walked back up, the host smiled at me. "There's our winner for tonight!"

I looked disbelievingly at the crowd as they cheered once more. "Well done, Eden. You did well. You may go now. As long as you take this." The host handed me a golden trophy, dramatically. Granted, it wasn't anything to elaborate. It was the classic cup style, made of plastic and it could fit in my hand nicely. Still, I smiled at him, waved to the audience and walked back off.

My mother took my hand, and we left for the car.

On the way home, which had to be a 4 hour drive. Mom began talking again. "So, you've won. I'm honestly not that shocked. That outfit of yours is astonishing." Speaking of the outfit, I just now realized that I was still in the plastic armor.

It was strange to think about the fact that I won, so I decided not too, and instead fell asleep on the late-night drive home.

I lied the seat back and closed my eyes, allowing the comforting rhythmic motion of the car to lull me to sleep. "Night, mom." I mumbled before passing out.

Something pulled at my chest. It was almost like I was falling. My eyes were sealed shut and a cold blast of wind seemed to wash over me.

Wait, cold? I was just in Florida. In the summertime! It doesn't get cold at all year-round, but in the summer it was even warmer.

I opened my eyes for a split second only to see a white sheet of something about 50 feet below me. I braced for impact and before I could register anything, I was out like a light.

☆¤☆¤☆

Muffled voices filed through my head. The ability to hear my surroundings being the first thing I regain in consciousness. I slowly open my eyes with blurry vision swimming in front of me. Isn't this the first sign of a concussion?

I hope not.

Then the sense of feeling came back. First thing noted being pain. My head hurt like crazy and my shoulder felt numb. My back was most definitely lying down on something cold. Freezing cold.

Thankfully, my hearing started to become more stable and less muffled as I could clearly make out what they were saying.

"She's obviously here to destroy us! Look at what she's wearing!" What's wrong with my clothes?

"I understand, but it would be unjustified to kill her without hearing what she has to say." That voice. Where have I heard it before? Wait. The other guy wanted me dead? For what reason?

"She'll just tell us lies! She's one of them." What's that supposed to mean? I'm one of who?

"Silence, Han! My decision is final. I will hear no more of this."

"Yes, chief." There was a pause. "Oh, look who's waking up."

I stiffened. What are they going to do to me? Who are they?

"There's no point in pretending to be asleep, now. Sit up." My vision cleared to see to men standing near me. One was older and more wise looking. The other; a brash teen. I should have known. I slowly sat up.

One question and one question only exited my mouth before anything else was said. "Where am I?"

The boy looked as though he was about to say something, but the person who I assumed was the chief stopped him. "Yes, I should have known. The healers did note that you had a minor concussion, but beyond that there wasn't much damage. Do you know your name?" He had a caring tone, but still seemed quite suspicious.

"Eden, sir. But that doesn't answer my question. Where am I?"

He sighed, but before he could say anything more, he was cut off by Han. "How could you not know where you are? You had to of traveled thousands of miles to get here-"

The chief cut him off once more. "That's enough, Han." He turned to me. "What do you remember last?"

"I was with my mom, heading back from the convention, when I fell asleep and landed here. Where ever 'here' is."

He sighed. "You are in the Northern Water Tribe. You have trespassed into our land and for that I require an explanation."

"But I was just in- wait. Did you just say 'Northern Water Tribe'?" I had to do a double-take, and for the first time I actually looked at what they were wearing. They were wearing water tribe tunics. There is no way. I have got to be dreaming right now.

"Yes, are you deaf?" Han asked. Wait, Han. That boy is Han, and didn't he say chief?

"If I'm in the Northern Water Tribe, then you must be chief Arnook. It's an honor to meet you, sir." I stood up and bowed respectfully. I'm dreaming, that doesn't mean I'm rude.

"I want to know why someone of the Fire Nation is here. They've never managed to get here before." I rose an eyebrow at Han. Why am I 'someone of the Fire Nation'?

I looked down at what I was wearing and almost laughed when I saw that the costume I wore was still on me. Except for one small difference: The plastic armor was now metal and the cheap material seems more like expensive and strong silk. I properly looked like Azula.

I let out an almost nervous chuckle. "I promise that I have nothing to do with the fire nation. I've never been there or to the colonies in my life." Both men looked at me disbelievingly.

"If not, then why are you dressed like that?!" Han spoke first. In his brashness, he was demanding answers; which, if I were perfectly honest, I don't think he'd believe me.

"Look, Han. You wouldn't believe if I told you. You are convinced that I am the enemy, and I know your type: once you have your mind set, nothing will change your mind." I kept my voice calm, and my voice scared me. It almost sounded like a replica of Azula's. I didn't sound like this last time I spoke.

The chief looked at me suspiciously, but before he could say anything Han spoke again. "Just because your from the Fire Nation, doesn't mean you can treat me like I'm an idiot. You are a prisoner here and you'll treat us with respect!"

I had to force myself to not roll my eyes. "That's what I'm trying to tell you. I'm not from the Fire Nation. This was a costume I was wearing when... when." I trailed off. How am I to explain this to someone like Han?

"When, what?" This time the chief spoke up. He had a raised eyebrow. I have no choice, but to explain to him. I just need to talk to him alone.

"Chief Arnook, sir. I need to speak with you in private. The information I have for you is highly... sensitive information. I'd prefer if you were the only one to hear what I have to say." He nodded his head.

He then signaled for Han to exit the room. Once Han was gone, he looked at me expectantly waiting for my explanation. Well, here goes. "Sir, I'm not from around here. I'm not from this world, I guess you could call it. I don't exist here, or at least I shouldn't. Although, I do know about about your home here, I'm not apart of this war in general."

His eyebrow raised once more. "Am I suspected to believe this?"

"No, I suppose it would be almost impossible for you to fathom how out of place I feel. I'm still convinced this is a dream. I did fall asleep in the car-"

"In the what?" He looked skeptical.

"My version of transportation." I dismissed his question. "You have to see where I'm coming from here. I come from a world where all of you are characters in a story. I'm wearing this because I dressed up as Princess Azula for a costume party. I thought since I already resembled her, it would be easy for people to be convinced of my outfit."

"So you dress up as a princess of the Fire Nation, because you were going to a party in a world where my people and I are just 'characters' in a story'?" I could only shrug halfheartedly.

"That's pretty much what happened."

"I find that very hard to believe, young lady."

"I completely understand. I'm still trying to figure out why I'm here in the first place." I smiled sheepishly at the leader.

"How do I know you're not lying to me?" Those words stopped me in my tracks. How was I to prove my story?

"I honestly don't know how to prove it to you, sir. If there is anything I could tell you that would let you know that I'm not lying, just tell me."

"I- One second please." He walked out of the room, and a moment later Han walked in with a confident look in his eye that scared me. He also had a weapon in right hand.

I gulped.

I began to back up, until I reached the back wall. I pressed myself up against it and lowered myself for more distance. He came up slowly and raised the weapon. Just as he began to lower it, I shot my hands up on instinct and closed my eyes.

The next thing I heard was a howl in pain. I opened my eyes slowly and saw that there was a mild burn on his hand. I cocked my head to the side in confusion. "Are you okay?"

He glared major daggers at me. "You said you weren't from the Fire Nation, you liar. I told the chief we should have disposed of you. You are nothing but the scum of the Earth."

"I don't understand. How did you get burned?" He looked like I was the most idiotic person in the room (Which I highly doubt, considering that he's in here).

"You did. You just used firebending." I shook my head.

"That's impossible. You're ridiculous." Just then a sudden wave of dizziness hit me and I collapsed.

The last thing I heard was Chief Arnook walking and asking what had happened, before I passed out.

☆¤☆¤☆

I once again awoke on the cold hard ground. I opened my eyes and almost immediately noticed that I was in a cell made of ice. "I'm starting to wonder about the hospitality of this place." I muttered.

I sat up and rubbed my head where I must have hit it when I collapsed last time. I slowly stood and walked over to where the cell door was and noticed that couple of guards were there.

"I'm bored." Neither of them budged. "Man, you guys remind me of the British 'statue' guards." The thought of them made me laugh. Soldiers trained to not move under any circumstances. I visited England once and tried to make one of them laugh- to no avail. They are no fun, whatsoever.

"Seriously, can I at least get some eye-contact over here?" Still no movement. Time for another tactic.

"Can you at least tell me why I'm here?" Without moving the one to my right answered me. "You are of the Fire Nation and have trespassed on Northern Water Tribe territory." I rolled my eyes.

"I told you people before, I've never been to the Fire Nation! I'm wearing a costume. I made it myself!"

This time the one on the left answered. "You burned Han with firebending."

"Can I speak with the chief? Surely he'll understand. I like him. Where is he?"

"I'm right here." He suddenly appeared from around the corner and I could that he was obviously not happy.

"Thank you! Someone who might actually listen! Can I come out?"

"No." He stated bluntly. I had no need to ask 'why', because he immediately continued. "I gave you a chance to explain yourself and you lied to me. I cannot trust you."

"I never lied to you! Everything I told you was the truth." I urged. He wasn't convinced.

"You told me you from another world- which is hard enough to believe in the first place- then just to prove yourself a liar you used firebending against Han."

"That would be the logic of a dream. I bet I could also waterbend." I tried my best not to sound incredibly sarcastic, but it was hard to believe what he was telling me.

"Do not mock my people- or my judgement- that way!" He was very fierce with every word he said.

"I'm not mocking you! I'm trying to explain to you that every bit of what's going on right now is physically impossible!" He rolled his eyes.

"You attempting an invasion with no weapons or help may be incredibly foolish, but is still more likely than what you are trying to make me believe. Speaking of which, where is the rest of your crew. You could not of gotten here on your own." He leaned into the cell ever-so-slightly.

"That's what I'm trying to tell you I don't know how I got here! One second I'm going to sleep on my way home, then I'm here. Actually, now that I think about it- has the Avatar come here?" I'd like to know where this is in the show.

"The Avatar died 100 years ago. Even if we knew if he was alive we wouldn't tell the likes of you."

"This is getting old. I'm not of this world- let alone the Fire Nation- I'm on your side! I always have been!"

"I find that hard to believe." He stated. Is that his favorite phrase?

I find you hard to believe, I wanted to say. "Wait, did you say you haven't seen him? And you all think he's dead? So the information hasn't relayed up here yet, which means I probably have a long time to wait before he shows up." I sighed. I really don't want to be stuck in a cell that long.

Thankfully, I didn't have to wait nearly as long as I thought.

Sorry about how poorly written this is. Future chapters will be better. I promise.
