8-Have You Two Met?
"Okay, girls. We have to make a good impression tonight. This woman signs my paycheck. Be nice, please. Sarah, I'm looking at you." Sarah rolled her eyes at our mother, "That was one time, mom. I was like five." A long time ago, when mom was trying to date, Sarah bit this one guy who came over. He totally deserved it though, he was a sleeze.
"I know, honey. Just, just... Be nice." Mom was turned in her seat, looking at Sarah. My mother was beautiful, and I might just be prejudiced, but I thought she was amazing. She used to have long, blond hair that spiraled naturally, but after my father left she cut it off. Now it's up to her ears. "You girls look gorgeous. Let's go." She gave us one quick smile and got out of the car shortly followed by Sarah and I.
"Sit next to me, okay?" I slipped my arm around my sister's shoulders. She laughed, "Like I wasn't going to anyway." I grinned. My sister and I had a really close relationship. We loved each other, and we protected each other. We arrived at the door after a long walk. The place was huge, but not like a mansion or anything. I guess it was just big to me because of how big my house was. As in, it wasn't. At all. I rocked back and forth on my heels and stuffed my hands in the pockets of my coat. Mom rang the doorbell and almost immediately a woman opened it.
She looked like she was maybe in her mid-forties, like my mom. She was tall and built. Her skin was a creamy sort of white, complemented by her pure black hair and dark brown eyes. "Hi, Avory. How are you? These must be your two daughters." Her thin lips were colored red, making her teeth look pearly white when she smiled. She was holding a glass of champagne. "Yes, this is Penelope and Sarah." I smiled and shook her hand. "It's lovely to meet you two. Avery has told me so much about you. Please, come in. There are only a couple of people here, we're having drinks in the living room before we eat." She let us in and I took my coat off.
"You have beautiful home." I said quietly, looking around. It was true, it was amazing. "Why, thank you Penelope. My husband designed it himself." As if on cue, a man walked in and out his arm around her waist. "Michael, this is Avery and her children. Penelope and Sarah." I shook his hand as well. He was tan and blonde. Not a single strand of gray on his head. His eyes were a piercing, oddly reminding me of Adam's. I squinted my eyes, come to think of it, he looked a lot like Adam.... No. Oh. God. No.
I gulped. "You girls go into the living room. Our son is in there, I'm sure he'd love to meet you." I suddenly wanted to go home, I did not want to be there. "Yeah, you guys go. I'll be there in a second." Sarah took my hand and dragged me into the big open space where two pairs of men and women sat chatting. "Sarah..." She interrupted me, "Adam!" She cheered as she saw who was sitting in the corner, reading. He looked up with an eyebrow raised. His eyes widened when he saw us and he stood up, making his book fall into the chair he was sitting in. He was wearing a pair of dark wash jeans and a grey t-shirt, rolled up to his elbows. Sarah ran over to him, dragging me with her. "Hey Adam, what are you doing here?" She was grinning from ear to ear.
"Hey... Sarah. Penelope..." He looked genuinely flustered. "Umm, uh." He ran a hand through his hair. His hair was already messy, he just made it worse. I smirked and crossed my arms, "What are you so nervous about?" I questioned. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and forcefully laughed. "What? I'm not nervous, why would you say I'm nervous?" I gestured to him, "Your disposition. You are clearly nervous." He looked behind him and grabbed the book, holding it behind his back. "Penelope, can I talk to you somewhere private?" Sarah sighed, "Are you too going to go kiss? Because that's just wrong." We both answered at the same time, "What?! No!" and Adam grabbed my arm and took me to another part of the house, I was guessing a study of some kind.
"What are you doing here?!" He whisper-shouted at me. I scrunched my nose up, "That is no way to talk to your guest Adam. It's my turn to be cocky now. Your mother is my mother's boss. I came for her job." He growled and suddenly got that arrogant glow in his green eyes that I had not missed. "Your turn to be cocky? Is it really now?" He moved closer to me, "God, why can't you just let me win once?!" I stomped my foot. How could he go from nervous to cocky so fast?! It's not fair. If I get nervous, I stay nervous. But apparently he can just switch his emotions on and off.
I backed up, "I guess it's just not in my nature. I like to be in control." He continued to move forward. I continued to move backward. "Stop, getting off topic. Why were you so nervous when you saw my sister and I? Did you not want us to see you reading?" For a split second he stopped, but like a said, I would never win. "Reading? I was glancing at a book that happened to look interesting to me, how is that supposed to make me nervous?" I gasped as I felt my butt hit something, I looked back to see a wooden desk. I tried to go to either side of him, but he just put his hands down where I was trapped. "I suppose that would make sense. But you WERE nervous, I could see it." I tried to ignore his hands on my hips.
"Like you are right now? Why are you nervous, PeniPie? Huh? You look nice by the way, I like the dress." He played with the hem of my dress. I gulped, "Adam, we have to go. Stop." He moved his lips next to my ear, "Stop what?" "Adam?! Penelope?!" He jumped back just in time to see his mother walk into the room, thank God. I gulped as she came closer and smiled. "Have you two met?" She raised an eyebrow at Adam. "Yeah, Danielle. We go to the same high school. I wanted to show Peni around." He grumbled. Why did he just call his mother by her first name? He wouldn't look at her either. He looked angry, or aggravated . But she didn't seem to notice.
"Oh, please don't. The rest of the house is a wreck. We were just about to sit down to eat, please join us when your finished." She smiled at me, I couldn't say anything, I was still in shock from her walking in on us. Wait! No, she didn't walk in on us. She walked in on Adam being a jerk. 'Danielle' turned and left. "Oh my God, that was terrible! Why, Adam?! What if she caught you doing... That?" He chuckled a little, "I was just playing around, Peni. Don't take it so serious." I crossed my arms again and bit my lip, "I'm not that girl, Adam. I'm not that girl." He furrowed his eyebrows, "What girl?" He looked genuinely confused.
"I'm not going to be that girl that you toy with, that you take to bed and forget about. I care about Melody enough to deal with you. So, we are either friends or you have to leave me alone. Because, I won't do it, Adam." I rambled on a bit until I finally looked up to see him staring at the ground so I left him there. I went to the dining room to see everyone just sitting down. There were two open seats for Adam and I... Right next to each other. I sighed and sat down.
A few minutes later, Adam came in and sat down next to me. Dinner started, and everyone was chatting, Sarah was even talking to everyone. But Adam and I stayed quiet. "Let's be friends." I jumped a little when I heard Adam's voice beside me and looked at him for a second. I swallowed and nodded slowly, "Let's be friends."
