Age 9
"Levi! Levi!" Eren yelled as he ran into the living room, his backpack and shoes still on.
"What, what" Levi responded from where he currently lay on the couch, an arm draped over his face and a beer can in his other that hovered away from the couch.
"I got a 100 on my quiz!" Eren cheered and held up the paper. Levi removed the arm from his face and used it to sit up. He set the can on the end table and ushered him over. Levi took the paper Eren was holding out and glanced it over.
"Hey, good job kid" he said, his face never changing from his usual frown, but this didn't bother Eren. "let's see... Where should we put this..." Levi stood up and looked around the room. "Hmm kitchen." he said and made his way to the kitchen, Eren excitedly following him.
"Right... here." he said as he slapped the paper onto the fridge. "Hm, we either need tape or a magnet and I'm not too sure about the magnet."
"I know where the tape is!" Eren yelled while raising his hand.
"then I trust you to go get it."
"Yes sir!" Eren ran off into the living room and soon brought back a roll of tape. "Here!" Eren held the tape roll up to Levi and waited in anticipation. Levi peeled a piece of tape off the roll with his free hand and leaned down, ripping it with his teeth. He placed the piece of tape over the top of the paper on the fridge then stepped back admiring his job. Levi glanced down at Eren who was just staring at the paper with a wide smile on his face.
"Hey go put your shoes by the door." Levi said while ruffling Eren's hair. Eren nodded and ran off down the hall towards the foyer. Levi went back to the living room and let his body fall on the couch, his eyes closing as he sighed. Eren appeared before him when he reopened his eyes, causing him to jump. "Yeah?"
"How was class?" Eren asked curiously as Levi sat up to make room for the kid to sit.
"It was okay." he responded and Eren sat down next to Levi. Eren nodded and the two slipped into a comfortable silence. Levi picked up his beer can and took a sip.
"Levi?"
"Yeah?" Levi asked from behind his beer can.
"What exactly do you go to college for?" Eren looked up at Levi curiously, his question stopping the older man from taking another sip.
"Oh, uh it's not necessarily a college. I'm studying at a police academy."
"Woah! Are you gonna be a police officer?" Eren asked, his eyes lighting up as he looked at Levi.
"Something like that, Yeah" Levi responded. The two fell into a silence again and eventually Eren got up from the couch to go do his homework. Levi stretched his legs across the space Eren had been and yawned, deciding he would take a nap till Eren called him for dinner.

Levi stood at the back of the classroom with his arms crossed as the small students in front of him shuffled in their desks, glancing back to look at the other adults that stood next to him. He looked towards Eren's desk and saw him turn his head, but quickly face forward after they made eye contact; Levi chuckled at the boy's actions. Today was parents day at Eren's school and Levi was surprised that he had actually went.
"Hey Erwin?" Levi called out as he stepped into the office of his officer in command Erwin lifted his head and sighed.
"Levi how many times do I have to tell you, don't address me so formally; We are at the academy."
"Yes yes got it, anyway I need a favor."
"Alright, what is it?" Erwin asked skeptically.
"I need tomorrow off."
"Excuse me?" Erwin blinked with a face of slight shock at Levi as he sat down dramatically on one of the two chairs that sat in front of Erwin's desk.
"Tomorrow, I need the day off. Just take one of my scheduled days off and replace it with today."
"I can't do that."
"Sure you can."
Levi heard the bell sound which caused a small excitement to go through the class. He glanced at the clock and gasped quietly, how could it already be lunchtime? The parents may have arrived later than the students, but that had felt too fast. Eren approached Levi with a smile and nodded towards the door. "Teacher says we are all eating outside." Levi nodded and followed Eren who had already begun walking out of the class. Eren glanced back with a smile and Levi felt a pang of guilt in his chest, he should have been paying attention.
Lunch went fairly quickly, Levi got to meet Eren's friends as well. The rest of the day was mostly filled with small parent/ student projects that would be put up outside the classroom. By the time they were walking out of the school's gate Levi felt exhausted. He stretched his hands up as Eren walked by his side, both backpack straps clenched in his hands.
"Levi?"
"Yeah?" Levi responded and rested his arms at his sides.
"Thank you for coming today." Eren said quietly, Levi glanced down to see that Eren's eyes were focused on the ground. He reached a hand down and ruffled Eren's hair, causing the small boy to smile slightly.
"Yeah, it was fun." Levi replied with a monotone voice. Eren and Levi walked in their usual comfortable silence as their apartment building appeared in view.

Levi opened his eyes slowly to find the living room light-less, with the exception of the TV. The only sound in the room was the music that played from the TV that currently was on a loop with the menu screen of the movie they had watched after dinner; Eren had never heard of Studio Ghibli so Levi had felt obliged to show him.
Levi flicked the TV off and squinted through the dark to try and find Eren's outline passed out on the couch. He lifted the boy fairly easily and took him down the hall to his room. He tucked him into the bed and quietly made his way out of the room leaving the bedroom door ajar. He reached over to the hallway light switch, hesitated, then switched it on before walking into his own room for the night.
