Act One Summary - 1
The next handful of posts will summarize the original play in long form to refamiliarize you and "set the stage" for what's to come. If you haven't bought the script, I'm going to suggest you do - legally, I feel it would be irresponsible of me otherwise. That said, I can't control what you read.
Much of this summary was collected from online sources that were uninterested in showing a negative slant toward continuity issues. It has been edited for readability and word count.
SPOILER ALERT -- -- Obviously.
The play begins with the epilogue from HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, when Harry and Ginny drop their children off at the Hogwarts Express. Harry's eldest son, James, is taunting his eleven-year-old brother, Albus Severus, suggesting that he might be sorted into Slytherin, which is said to be the house of evil wizards like Lord Voldemort. Albus stares at platforms Nine and Ten, before his parents tell him to walk straight into the wall and not to fear. The Potters run onward, transporting themselves.
Platform nine and three-quarters is filled with Hogwarts students and their families. Harry's daughter, Lily, joins Ron Weasley, her favorite uncle, who shows her a lame trick from Weasley's Wizard Wheezes, where he works. This causes Ron and Hermione's daughter, Rose, to feel embarrassed. Before boarding the train, Albus asks what his father would think if he were to be sorted into Slytherin. Harry reassures Albus that he was named after two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of whom was a Slytherin. But if Albus was worried, he could always ask the Sorting Hat to place him in Gryffindor, as Harry had done his first year at school. Relieved, Albus boards the train. Harry shares his son's worries with Hermione. She tells him that Rose is busy thinking about breaking Quidditch scoring records and wondering how early she can take the O.W.L.s.
On the way, Rose suggests that Albus ignore the Trolley Witch and concentrate on making friends, like their parents had done on the first trip to Hogwarts. Albus opens a compartment door to find a blonde boy, Scorpius, sitting alone. The boy offers them a place to sit and some of the sweets he'd bought from the trolley. Albus accepts, but Rose is eager to leave the compartment. Scorpius is a Malfoy, and his father, Draco, was a Death Eater. Furthermore, the rumor was that Voldemort was his true father, that his parents could not conceive a child, so Draco and Lucius Malfoy used a Time-Turner to send Draco's wife, Astoria, to the past, where she became pregnant with Voldemort's heir. Despite the rumor, Albus stays behind. Scorpius says thanks, but Albus playfully tells him that he only stayed for the sweets.
The new students enter the Great Hall for the Sorting Ceremony and notice Albus, happy to have a Potter in their year. Overhearing, Rose Granger-Weasley proudly claims Albus as her cousin. The Sorting Hat places Rose into Gryffindor, like the rest of her family. Then it calls Scorpius Malfoy and sorts him into Slytherin, like those in his family. Lastly, it calls on Albus Potter, only the hat takes longer. It sorts him into Slytherin.
The students are shocked. Albus nervously joins the Slytherin students to find Scorpius excited.
A montage speeds up the passage of time. The scene transitions to Madam Hooch's flying lesson. The students are ordered to yell "up" to lift the brooms. On the first try, Rose and others succeed. Albus completely fails. Classmates see him as a disgrace to the family name.
The scene changes to platform nine and three-quarters. It's a year later. Albus tells Harry to keep his distance. He doesn't want people comparing them. Harry asks if it might help to find some friends like Ron and Hermione. Albus says that he already has a friend, Scorpius, and departs.
Draco Malfoy appears and tells Harry to release a statement from the Ministry of Magic that all of the Time-Turners were destroyed during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries. Harry explains to Draco that he needs to allow the rumor about his son's parentage to die on its own. Apparently, Scorpius isn't the first to be accused of being Voldemort's child.
At Hogwarts, Professor McGonagall declares Rose to be the new Quidditch Chaser for Gryffindor. In contrast, Albus and Scorpius are in Potions, where a cauldron explodes in their faces, causing the students to laugh at Albus.
Later, back on the platform, Albus is leaving for his third year. Harry hands him a signed permission slip for Hogsmeade. Albus says that he hates Hogsmeade because it's filled with Hogwarts students. Harry suggests a trip to Honeydukes, where Albus can eat all the sweets he wants without his mother's permission. Albus crumples the paper and sets it on fire with a spell. Dismayed, Harry states that he's been exchanging owls with McGonagall, he knows that Albus is uncooperative in lessons and isolating himself. Albus asks if he should conjure a spell to make himself more popular or to be more skilled in magic, something to make him good enough for Harry. Before his father can respond, Albus runs to Scorpius and gets on the train. Once inside, Scorpius confesses that his mother has died and asks Albus to come to the funeral. Then, in an act that further isolates Albus from his family, the Sorting Hat places Lily, his sister, into Gryffindor.
At the Ministry, Harry enters his messy office, where he finds Hermione, the Minister of Magic, examining his paperwork. She asks if the rumors are true about former Hogwarts student, Theodore Nott, being in possession of a Time-Turner. Harry reveals the Time-Turner, explaining that this particular device "is not just an hour-reversal turner - it goes back further", unlike the one Hermione had used during their third year. She then asks why he isn't on top of his paperwork, Harry says that he gets his information from the streets, including the Theodore Nott story. Hermione changes the subject, asking Harry if he wants a toffee, which he declines. He is off sugar. Hermione asks about Ginny and the children. Harry replies that he is as good at being a father as he is at organizing his paperwork. She tells him to go home to his family because the Hogwarts Express is soon to depart for yet another year.
Now at home, it's night and Albus can't sleep. From the stairs, he watches as his father is visited by a man named Amos Diggory, after constantly delaying appointments. Harry apologizes, but Amos rebukes him, blaming Harry for the death of his son, Cedric, because Lord Voldemort had intended to kill Harry. He asks Harry to bring back his son with the rumored illegal Time-Turner that was seized by the Ministry. Harry declines. It is too dangerous to mess with time. Meanwhile, a girl appears and sits beside Albus on the stairs. She introduces herself as Delphi Diggory, niece of Amos. Delphi has been taking care of her uncle at St. Oswald's Home for Old Witches and Wizards. Outraged, Amos calls Harry a "stone-cold Ministry man" and they leave.
On Christmas holiday, Albus sits on his bed and overhears his brother talking about hiding himself with the Invisibility Cloak since his hair is now pink, while Lily laughs about her new fairy wings. Harry then enters the room with gifts. Albus got a love potion from his Uncle Ron, and a blanket from his dad - the very blanket in which Harry was wrapped when Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Hagrid first left him at Privet Drive. When his Aunt Petunia died, his cousin Dudley found the baby blanket and sent it along. Harry confesses that anytime he was feeling sad and needed some luck he held the blanket. He wanted Albus to have it for that same reason. Albus shrugs off the gift and says that his father should keep it. Harry persists, and Albus reacts aggressively to the pointless gift. James got a Cloak of Invisibility and Lily some fairy wings. He was given a moldy, old blanket.
Albus then tells his father that he needs to pack for school. Harry tries to help, since he always enjoyed packing. It meant that he was leaving Privet Drive and returning to Hogwarts. Tired of listening to the same old story, Albus interrupts him by completing the sentence. He saved the Wizarding World! Wow! Albus mockingly offers his gratitude, but Harry says that he never wanted gratitude.
With the mood swiftly changing, Harry says he's tired of feeling responsible for his son's unhappiness and that he should be grateful to at least have a dad, since Harry never had one. Albus asks if he felt that not having a father was unlucky, clearly making a dig at Harry, who then asks his son if he wishes that Harry was dead. Albus says no, but that sometimes he wishes Harry wasn't his father.
Harry replies that sometimes he wishes Albus wasn't his son.
Harry tries to retract this comment, but Albus knows that he truly meant it. He tells his dad to leave. Harry attempts to resolve the fight. Irritated, Albus grabs the blanket and throws it, knocking over Ron's love potion. The bottle spills onto the blanket.
We are then seeing a dream. Harry is hiding in a lighthouse with his Aunt, Uncle, and his cousin, when Hagrid arrives with a birthday cake and his Hogwarts letter. Hagrid tells him that Hogwarts is a school for witches and wizards. The dream is interrupted by the voice of Voldemort calling out his name, and Harry wakes.
Ginny asks if he had a nightmare. Harry acknowledges the dream and admits that he'd said some bad things to Albus. Ginny says she knows and that Albus will forgive his father in time. Harry wishes that Albus was more like James or Lily.
He suddenly feels a sharp pain on his forehead. Ginny asks if his scar is hurting. Yes, for the first time in twenty-two years.
