A Long Wait

The call was made and the very next afternoon, me and Mom went to Dr. Warren's clinic. The waiting room was quiet because half the room was filled with elderly people dosing off like they're in hospice. I felt like a baby compared to all of them. I looked at Mom who was watching The Waltons on one of the TVs.

"When I was a little girl, I hopscotched with rocks instead of chalk," I said in a feeble voice.

She smiled.

"You're lucky they're snoozing or else I'd have to smack ya."

We giggled.

"Watch this show with me, it'll give you an idea of what your great aunts' time was like."

Aunt Edie and Aunt Ginny are two sisters in their 80s and 90s, although Aunt Edie smoked up a storm, she would tell me stories of her youth, she said I was her favorite niece, she said that to Mom too. My middle name is Edith, after Aunt Edie. They have a basset hound that's got emphysema named Doris, nearly old herself.

Over forty minutes later, we finally got called by a technician.

"Right in here."

We walked into an exam room. I sat in a chair facing a mirror reflecting a chart.

"Let's see here, your last eye exam was almost a decade ago."

"And they said her eyes were great!" Mom said.

"Hmm, her eye troubles just started?"

"Yes."

Mom was lying to her, I always had eye troubles.

"I'm gonna give you this to cover your eye and you read the first line that you're able to read."

I read the first line which was a few huge letters. Same for the other eye, I read the next line well.

"What I'm seeing here is that Angel has issues with depth perception. Dr. Warren will explain more when he sees you today."

We were shown another waiting area but it was smaller, the size of the laundry room. But, there were only two other people there.

"The eye I see better out of, I call my good eye."

Mom patted me on the hand.

"Honey, we'll get you looked at."

"Me and Axl are twins and he has great vision."

"We all have our flaws. Sue has bad teeth, Brick has bad social skills, Axl has a bad attitude, Dad has no emotions, I'm a lazy parent, and you have eye troubles."

"You're not a lazy parent, Rita Glossner is a lazy parent. You're a saint compared to that woman."

Mom smiled.

"Sweetie...my Angel."

Finally, we were in the exam room, it was much larger than the tech exam room, more advanced equipment. I pulled the lens adjuster towards me, looked through, and put both hands on the armrests..

"Space...the final frontier...to boldly go where no ophthalmologist has gone before."

"Angel, don't mess with that."

I pushed the equipment where I got it.

We walked outside, Mom had a prescription for glasses in her hand.

"You're getting glasses...but at what cost, huh?" Mom asked as she got in the car.

I got in after her.

"I'll look like a librarian, big glasses and curly hair, all I need is a Jehovah's Witness-esque outfit."

"You will look beautiful in glasses...I know it, you're beautiful now sweetheart."

We were home, Axl was already in his underwear watching TV. His clothes were on the floor right in front of Mom.

"Axl, what did I tell you about leaving your dirty clothes as soon as you walk in this house!?"

"I'll get it later," he replied unfazed.

"No, no no no Axl, you'll get off your butt and pick up the clothes yourself."

"OK...GOD MOM!"

He stood up, grabbed the clothes, and headed to the laundry basket. I sat on the couch where he was. At that moment, he came back.

"Get outta my seat Angel!"

"We can share like we did when we were babies."

"Don't make me wrestle you out of my seat!"

"You can't even wrestle a blow up doll."

"Just sit next to her!" Mom shouted from her room.

"Not until I get my spot back!"

"You don't have a spot on this couch, it's a household appliance, not an Axl appliance."

"I was sitting there first!"

"Wanna wrestle for it?"

"You're on little sister!"

"We're twins!"

We started wrestling on the floor, the coffee table started scooting forward.

"Give it up Ang! I was here first!"

"Never!"

At that moment, Dad walked in.

"Hey...HEY, BREAK IT UP!"

We stopped and sat on the couch.

"What do you think you're fussin' about?"

"Fighting for territory," I replied.

"Territory? I bought the house and the furniture with it...this is my territory! If you wanna fight for it, go ahead and square up! Axl...Angel...both of ya?"

"No sir," I said.

"No," Axl said.

"That's what I thought."

He walked to the master bedroom where Mom was. Axl and I started watching TV.

"Are you getting another pair of eyes?" He asked.

"Yeah, probably from the Frugal Hoosier."

"Ha...four eyes."

"You'll be one eye in a minute."

"Geez Ang, I was only kidding."

We continued to watch TV.

The next morning was a Saturday, I wanted to sleep in but Brick woke me up.

"Angel...wake up," he whispered.

He whispered wake up to himself.

"Good morning Bricky...it's a Saturday."

"I know, there's something you should see."

"What?"

"I was reading stuff in the kitchen, I found something you need to read, it's from your last eye appointment years ago!"

I followed him to the kitchen. He picked up a paper, it was a prescription for glasses from when I was little. I never got those glasses! That is so like my parents! I should've got those glasses.

"Thanks for showing me little bro, I love you."

I kissed Brick on top his head, I went to my parents' room.

"Mom...Dad...wake up."

They opened their eyes amd stretched.

"Angel, what time is it?" Mom asked.

"Time to talk about something."

I held up the prescription.
