I'm Fine
I'm fine...
How many times have you said those words when you're feeling anything but fine? If I had to be honest, I'd have to tell you more about me...
Anxiety it's a huge part of my life, though I rarely talk about it. You probably know someone who has it, or maybe you struggle with it yourself. Behind the screen, everything might seem fine, but out there, in real life? It's a different story, isn't it?
Anxiety is a silent disorder. It can hit you anytime, anywhere. Some people might understand, but in my experience, those closest to me often struggle the most to accept my reality. That's when loneliness creeps in, not because I'm alone, but because I feel unseen. It's not about blame, though. Let me emphasize: social anxiety, depression, or any mental health struggle isn't a choice, and it's definitely not a plea for attention.
Living with social anxiety makes you believe that nothing you do is ever right or good enough. It brings all those self-doubts to the surface, making you think the worst about yourself. To others, you might seem fine...maybe a bit shy or introverted. But inside, it's a storm. I'm not an expert, far from it, but I know that feeling all too well. It really sucks, doesn't it?
If you have anxiety, don't be ashamed. Just getting through each day is an act of courage. It's okay not to be okay. It's okay to fail. What's not okay is giving up on yourself. Words matter...they can change everything. You can lose someone because of what's said, or because of what's left unsaid. Anxiety makes you doubt every little thing, but when you're ready, you will be okay. Believe me, you can make the impossible possible, in your own time, on your own terms. But it has to start with you...
Do it for yourself, not for others. Don't change who you are just to fit in or to meet someone else's expectations. You are unique, and that's enough. But until you see that for yourself, nothing will change. Take the first step, and please, try to love yourself. I know how hard that is...
And if you don't have anxiety, there's one thing I'd like to ask...don't judge others. You only see the surface; you don't know what's hidden beneath that smile. Look around you...just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. Instead of judging someone's "weird" behavior, try to understand that everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
Social anxiety and depression can destroy relationships, life experiences, even life itself. We need to talk about them openly, without shame.
I have social anxiety, and I struggle with depression. I overthink everything, I miss out on opportunities, I avoid conversations, and I isolate myself. I'm aware of all the excuses I make to avoid certain things, but I'm working toward a day when I won't need excuses anymore. One day, I'll be okay for me. I'll socialize because I want to, not out of obligation. No more shy smiles, no more pretending to be on my phone just to avoid talking to someone. I'll be in control, on my terms, in my own time.
Until then, I'm okay...
So...how are you?
