Chapter 20
The doorbell rang.
Nila left Anuradha and dashed to open the door for Narain. Shiva too walked towards the door behind Nila. Anuradha stood up just as Shalini walked out of the bedroom.
"Papa!" sang Nila, jumping into Narain's arms as soon as he stepped into the house.
Narain smiled, expecting the child would pop up with a flattering comment as usual but instead, Nila asked, "Papa, do you have a Mommy?"
Shalini smiled a bit at him and then at Anuradha before heading towards the dining room.
"Mommy?" Narain frowned a little in confusion.
Before Nila could answer him, they were surprised to hear Shalini's voice, "Didn't you order food for lunch yet? I said I'll cook, you didn't let me. Where is our lunch now?"
"Eh, we ate and finished it without leaving any for you. You can cook lunch for yourself and eat," retorted Shiva with a smirk. "What else do you expect me to say, Lini? Lunch is not here means it's on the way, right? Give it time to get here."
"Not funny." Shalini pursed her lips and folded her arms.
Confounded, Narain and Anuradha glanced from Shiva to Shalini and back as they had never observed the perfect couple having a tiff before.
Nila giggled a little, accustomed to her parents frequent loving tiffs.
"Why are you standing at the door, Narain? Come on in, man," called out Shiva. "And you sit, Anu."
Anuradha headed towards the dining room with Shalini while Narain seated himself in the living room.
"Papa, you didn't answer my question." Nila pouted.
"What was your question again, baby?"
Nila narrowed her eyes and glared at him for a moment, pretending to be angry before bursting into a giggle.
Okay, so do you have a Mommy, Papa? No, like Mama don't have a Daddy, Papa also don't have a Mommy, I think. If Papa had a Mommy, I would know. Papa won't have a Mommy without telling me. Okay, so Mama don't have a Daddy, Papa don't have a Mommy. So, Mama Papa same same. But like Mommy loves Daddy, Mama loved one Daddy before. Like Daddy loves Mommy, did Papa love any Mommy before?
"What are you thinking, baby? Tell me your question."
"Papa, do you love anyone?"
"Yes. I love you, baby," replied Narain coolly.
"Me? How can you love me, Papa?" Nila practically shrieked at the top of her voice.
Shiva, who had been checking something in his mobile, glanced at them, raising his eyebrow. His mobile rang and he walked away to answer the call. Narain watched Nila, puzzled.
"I'm still so small, Papa! Look, I'm only this much. You should love someone as big as Mommy, Papa!" Nila stretched her right hand all the way up to show how tall her mother was.
Narain laughed, seeing the horrified expression on Nila's face. "Baby, you asked Papa if Papa loves anyone. Like your Daddy loves you, Papa also loves you the same."
Realization dawned on Nila and she grinned again. "So, Papa don't love any Mommy?"
"No, baby."
"Why, Papa? If Papa have a Mommy, she will make Papa happy. Like my Mommy makes my Daddy happy all the time. If Daddy sad, Mommy will make Daddy happy. If Daddy happy, Mommy will also be happy. So if Papa have a Mommy, Papa can always smile. No more sad Papa."
Narain smiled a bit. Her words were a reflection of what she saw in her parents. But that never applied to me and my love. And it will never apply to me and anyone else again. "No, baby. Papa don't want a Mommy again."
"Why, Papa?"
"Papa had a Mommy before."
"Papa's Mommy not nice?"
Narain frowned at Nila for a moment. Despite my anger towards my wife, I could never hate her for how much she had hurt me. I could never accept a negative word about her even from her own parents. But I can't deny Nila's words. Narain turned his face away and nodded slowly.
"Then, throw and take new Mommy, Papa!"
"New Mommy?" Narain was shocked. How could she say that so easily?
"Yup! Like my bestest Daddy has my bestest Mommy, my bestest Papa should have a bestest Mommy!"
Silence.
"Papa, can I find you a bestest Mommy? Please? Papa's Nila baby is asking, right? Say yes, okay, sure, of course baby, please?"
Narain hesitated for a long moment. Who will she find for me? Whoever it is, I doubt anyone will take a kid's words regarding this topic seriously. I might as well say okay to keep my baby happy. I can't say no to her pleas anyway. "Okay."
"Yay! I love you, Papa!" squealed Nila, giving him a tight hug.
Mama, Papa. Papa, Mama. Perfectu perfecty perfect! Mama and Papa will be like my Mommy and Daddy. Mama and Papa will be happy and have happy fight like Mommy and Daddy. I will have two mothers and two fathers. Two bestest mothers and two bestest fathers. Everyone will be happy and I will be happy.
"I already found a Mommy for you, Papa."
Narain frowned. This soon? "Did you ask her if she's okay with your Papa?"
"She will say okay because she's my Mama. My bestest Mama for my bestest Papa."
"Who? Anu? No way!"
Nila frowned.
"I mean, baby, your Mama won't agree."
"My Mama will agree."
"Ask and see."
"I will ask and come now nowy now, Papa! My Mama will agree!"
Nila sprinted over to the dining room.
"Lini!" called out Shiva, bringing the delivered food to the kitchen.
Shalini left Anuradha in the dining room and headed to the kitchen.
Anuradha grinned as Nila ran over to her.
"Mama, Mama." Nila placed her hands around Anuradha's cheeks. "I found a Daddy for you, Mama."
"Daddy? Oh." Anuradha was taken aback. Must be Narain. Who else? "Did you ask him?"
"Mama! Why you and Papa asking like that?" Nila pouted. "Mama agree, right?"
"No, baby, it won't work. Listen to Mama, Mama doesn't want to make you sad. But Mama doesn't like your Papa." Anuradha felt awful; she had no choice but to say no to Nila.
"Why, Mama? Papa is bestest Daddy for Mama. Nila love Mama and Papa very much. If Mama-Papa love and happy like Mommy-Daddy, Nila very very very happy!"
"Mama and Papa cannot love and be happy like that. Mommy and Daddy are special. That's why they love each other so much and are very happy together." Anuradha tried to reason to the child. "If you don't believe Mama, try ask your Papa and see. He won't agree."
"My Papa will agree. I will ask and come now nowy now, Mama!" Nila darted back to the living room.
Narain was seated on a couch, tapping his feet in boredom. Nila ran over to him.
"Papa, Papa, Mama is bestest Mommy for Papa. Nila love Papa and Mama very much. If Papa-Mama love and happy like Daddy-Mommy, Nila very very very happy! So Papa agree, right?"
Narain frowned. "No, baby, Papa and Mama cannot be the same like your Daddy and Mommy. Your Mommy and Daddy are perfect. That's why they are like that. Baby, Papa doesn't want to make you sad but Papa cannot like your Mama. Even your Mama doesn't like Papa; I'm sure she won't agree."
Nila's face fell and she pouted.
"Don't be sad, baby. You're my good girl, right?"
Nila shook her head stubbornly.
"You ask me anything else; I'll give you. But I cannot agree to this, baby."
Nila looked down at the floor gloomily. She waited for a few minutes. Papa is not agreeing after seeing me sad also. I will show my sad face to Mama. Maybe Mama will agree then.
Nila dragged herself back to the dining room where Anuradha was waiting alone, rubbing her palms in boredom.
"Aww, why are you so sad, baby?"
Nila remained silent, looking down at the floor.
"Your Papa didn't agree, right? That's why Mama told you clearly. Don't be sad about it, baby. Be my good girl. Smile."
Nila shook her head again stubbornly and waited. Mama is also not agreeing after seeing me sad. So this plan is not working. I have to think of another plan. I will make my Mama and Papa become happy like my Mommy and Daddy.
To be continued...
