Anticipation
Arriving at home, I was ecstatic. I had a friend, and theatre tonight! But I also had my flute group practice tonight, which meant I only had forty-five minutes to do my homework and get ready.
Luckily, I didn't get much work today. Because, being the girl I am, it would take me at least twenty minutes to get dressed. Because there was no way I was going to theatre or flute in my school uniform. Private school uniforms are good for two things: taking less than five minutes to get ready, and comfort. The thing they are not good for? Looking good. Most people think school uniforms look like the "sexy" ones they see in Hollywood movies. Let me tell you, that clothing would not fly in any private school in existence. But I digress.
I grabbed a snack from our pantry and sat at the kitchen table. Looking over my homework, it looked like I was in good shape. All I had left to do after finishing most of my work in school was one page of a science packet.
Science was my favorite subject (besides art) so this would take even less time.
Before I knew it, I answered the last problem. (mitochondria!) After putting the packet back into my folder, I looked up at the clock and saw that I had thirty-five minutes to get ready! This was great!
I planned my outfit all too carefully. It had to be perfect! I had to make a lasting impression. After fifteen minutes of debating on several choices, I decided on my dark skinny jeans paired with a white cami under a cropped sweater. To top it off, I added my signature green high-tops and a simple heart pendant necklace.
I ckecked myself in the mirror. I looked good! I felt confident.
I still had twenty minutes to spare, so I logged onto the computer and killed time by playing solitaire. I had a great winning streak. I checked the time and almost freaked. We should have left 5 minutes ago!
I raced to the bottom of the stairs and yelled for my mom, telling her I'd be waiting in the car.
I waited there for at least five moreminutes. Honestly, my mom has no sense of urgency.
She finally came out of the house walking at a leisurely pace then giving the excuse of not being able to her keys.
We made up good time by taking a less busy route, but when we arrived at flute group practice (which was downtown, explaining why we had to leave so early) I was still a few minutes late.
I rushed in the building and took my seat, then started to warmup with my flute. Pratice was typical; the teacher going over our extremely easy music, my friends and I making funny faces at each other across the room.
Nothing eventful happened, until practice was over. As first chair, I was in charge of organizing the stands and chairs as everyone else staked them up.We had to stack up our own music stands and chairs because we were the last class of the day. But as I was putting my chair on the unstable stack, my friend Max started to talk to me.
That wasn't the unusual part. The unusual part was he suddenly said,
"Do you have an e-mail?"
Reluctantly, I responded, "Yeah........why?"
After a long and exceedingly awkward silence he quickly retorted,
"Oh, um...nothing. Nevermind, forget I said anything."
I got a weird feeling that I quickly shook off. he had been my friend for a few years, he probably just wanted to talk to me about our inside jokes when we couldn't get yelled at by the conductor.
My mom was waiting for me in the car in the parking lot. We quickly raced out and went on our way to theatre.
Thankfully, it was only a few blocks away, so we woudn't be late for the first practice. Or least, we weren't supposed to be. But we got caught behind this REALLY slow car.
By the time the car parked in the lot at theatre, it was 7:00. A.ka, the time theatre started. The moment the car stopped, I leaped out and ran inside. I couldn't be late on the first day! What kind of impression would that give? I sprinted up four flights of stairs to theatre. but apparently, I went a little too fast for my feet, because I couldn't stop in time and I crashed into a wall.
Dizzy from the collision, I hobbled through the hallway to the theatre room. Not wanting to look like I almost killed myself in front of everyone, I waited outside the door a few seconds to regain stability, then walked in.
