Chapter 27: Headrush
Kyoreki Raijin sighs as he sits in one of the chairs provided to the students taking the exam. His eyes remain closed as his class all reunite, telling stories of their experiences during the battle royal. His eyes don't open again until he hears Mera, the instructor proctoring the exam, speaks over the PA to every student who survived.
"All right. For the 100 of you who passed the first test, please turn your attention to the screen." All eyes fall on the monitor showing the arena from above. Kyo's eyes snap open at the sound of explosions as he and all of the students watch in horror and or shock about the destruction happening nearby.
"Wait... does that mean?" Izuku Midoriya stares in abject horror.
"There's only one more round to the exam. Your goal is simple: undertake rescue exercises and save the bystanders who are trapped in these disaster sites."
"Save the what now." Minoru Mineta and Denki Kaminari ask in unison.
"Bystanders." Toru Hagakure turns to them. "We learned about them in class, remember? They're people at a disaster scene."
"We need to quickly set up a triage site." Kyo says as he joins the class.
"I'm surprised you paid attention during that class." Momo Yaoyorozu smiles at the redhead standing beside her.
"It's more, I remember some stuff mom taught me as a kid." His eyes remain glued to the monitor.
"Use this time to show us how you will carry out successful rescue procedures once you receive your provisional licenses. Treat this as though it were the real thing."
Everyone who was at Camino Ward the day of the battle recognizes the visuals of what went on that day. Kyoreki and Aka Bokasu nod to each other. The others watch as people rise out of the debris.
"These specialists have been trained as professional "persons in need of rescue." They're very popular. Introducing the "Help Us Company." Also known as HUC for short."
"So they're basically actors, I guess." Sero comments.
"It's the kind of job you never think about." Asui says.
"It is a necessary one in our world." Raijin says crossing his arm. "Also, they pay really well. Uncle did part time with them for a while."
"The HUC bystanders have dressed up like injured victims and will be located throughout the disaster site. We'll be judging how well you keep them safe as you go about your mission. Oh, by the way, we'll be scoring you on a point system. If you have more points than the benchmark at the time the exercise comes to an end, then you pass the exam. We'll start in ten minutes."
Raijin sighs as Class 1A, start to work themselves into a frenzy about what to do. "Class 1A, on me." He declares gathering everyone's attention. "This is a basic triage disaster test. Form groups of four no less. I didn't think I'd need these, but I'm glad I brought them. Communication will be sent through these." He pulls from his backpack several headsets, that allow communication between groups. "I have six, so each group picks a leader, and that person will relay intel regarding their location and any person they need for a specific location. First order of business is creating a triage site to deal with the wounded and get them away from danger. Am I understood?"
"Yes!" Many of his classmates shout, all of them ready themselves, those with the headsets include, Izuku Midoriya, Momo Yaoyorozu, Tenya Iida, and Shoto Todoroki are the ones to receive headsets, Bakugo who would have been the last leader almost broke it before Raijin snatched it back.
After a few minutes, mostly spent interacting with the other classes. Kyo stops stretching as an alarm rings throughout the room.
"Villains have performed a large-scale attack, spanning all of "insert city name here." Since most buildings collapsed, there are many injured."
Raijin nearly scoffs. "One hell of a brief story. All righty boys and girls. Let's get moving."
"Due to heavily damaged roads the first responders have unfortunately been delayed for the time being. Until emergency services arrive, the heroes in the area will lead the rescue efforts. Your task is to save as many people as you can and help the injured. And with that... begin!"
Raijin bursts forward, he leads everyone from every school that passed into the city, he and Bokasu are the first to arrive in the city. The two swiftly find people, doing their best to reassure and mark people for rescue. Kyo communicates with everyone he can as they begin to split into teams. He has designations for specific people, Midoriya, Iida, and Bokasu are the ones to transport civilians once they're removed from dangerous positions everyone else is to locate and assess the situation with the team. He chuckles slightly as he overhears Midoriya and several others being scolded for making the mistake of commenting on the "injuries" some of the HUC sustained. After around ten minutes Kyo stands atop a some rubble he crouches down as he watches some of his classmates working on rescue while Bokasu is returning from taking another civilian to the triage sites.
"What's wrong?" Bokasu asks standing beside Kyo.
"This is too straightforward for this exam. There's no possible way this is all they're gonna throw at us." He says covering his mic.
"You thinking they're gonna try to make it harder?"
"Likely they'll fake a villain attack. If that happens Todoroki, Bakugo, and myself are the best of our class to send to fend that attack off." Kyoreki watches as Yaoyorozu works with Midoriya and Uraraka to rescue a civilian, before Midoriya helps them to the triage site.
Kyoreki turns suddenly at the sound of an explosion nearby. "There it is." He says forgetting to mute his mic.
"What is it?" Yaoyorozu questions.
"The tests plot twist." Kyo grins. "Todoroki, we have no way to get ahold of Bakugo, you and I have to confront the attackers."
"How do you know it's a new threat?"
"Come on, even you could tell this is way too straightforward." Kyoreki scoffs.
"A villain has completed another large scale attack." Mera announces.
"This is part of the exam. Todoroki, we need to engage this threat. We're the best suited to doing so among class 1A."
"The terrorist have appeared and are beginning to sweep the area. Hero candidates at the scene should continue their rescue efforts while also suppressing the newly arrived villains."
"To Class 1A. All speedsters should be switching between attacking the villains and transporting civilians. Anyone with versatile quirks should be focusing on rescue operations. Todoroki & I will focus on stopping the attack." Kyoreki announces. He stands, and using his quirk rushes to the triage site alongside Midoriya. He and Midoriya stand shoulder to shoulder ready to fight against Gang Orca.
"Tell me, wannabe heroes. Can you rescue people and fight at the same time?" Gang Orca stares down the students.
"Get everyone to safety!" Shindo shouts as he rushes past Midoriya and Raijin. "I'll start hammering away at the henchmen at one second intervals.
"Send Bokasu to the triage site, now. He's is vital to the evacuations of the civilians." Raijin orders, within a blink Bokasu is speeding through the current triage site and moving people to a new safer location. Raijin turns back as Shindo is defeated by Gang Orca in a single attack.
Orca prepares to attack the triage site when a wall of ice blocks the attack.
"You're right on time Shoto." Raijin grins.
Raijin leaps atop the wall as Todoroki's ice spreads out trapping dozens of the henchmen. Raijin exhales and uses his quirk to speed along the top of the ice, he swiftly and with single blows knocks each villain out, occasionally using lightning cords to bash the villains into each other, or dodge attacks. It's then that Inasa arrives, he and Todoroki make eye contact, Inasa's arrival throws Raijin and Todoroki off their game, and the massive wind flow causes Raijin to withdraw to stand beside the pair.
Raijin watches as both Todoroki and Inasa try to attack at the same time, but their quirks force the others attack into wild patterns doing nothing to Gang Orca.
"Damn it, you idiot!" Raijin roars as he launches several beams of electricity at Gang Orca forcing him to dodge and back away from the three. "All right you two, I'm settling this. You need to synchronize now!"
"I'd never work with him!"
"Then get out of the front-lines, you fucking moron!" Raijin shouts at Inasa. He's forced to maintain a constant usage of lightning cords to take out the henchmen, while also designated sections to push back gang orca. "You wanna be a hero? Then get over yourselves and work together!" Raijin growls as he's forced to increase his potency, both Todoroki and Inasa have stopped fighting, the pair staring at Raijin as he fights. His electricity raises from red to purple.
"Shit. My left hands going numb again." He mutters as the beams focused on Gang Orca move faster and nearly grab the number 10 pro hero. His eyes widen as a wave of fire and wind ride around the hero a massive fire tornado forms around Gang Orca. Raijin now uses his quirk to keep all of the henchmen down for the count. Soon the others arrive to provide backup. Izuku Midoriya, Tsuyu Asui, Mina Ashido, Aka Bokasu, Fumikage Tokoyami, are among the first wave. The second wave begins with Shiketsu High's arrival.
"A cyclone prison of wind and fire. Not bad." Gang Orca compliments the two holding him back. "Any ordinary villain would give up would weep and beg your mercy. But what would you do if your desperate trap was not enough?"
"Simple." Raijin grins, his attention now free to return to Gang Orca. "Stop holding back." He tilts his head, flipping the switch on his special battery in the backpack. His purple lightning flashes white the moment Gang Orca breaks free of the attack used by Todoroki & Inasa, Raijin is crouched beneath the Number Ten Pro Hero. "Fifth Evolution. Lightning Cutter." He declares the noise of his attack pierces the ears of any who are nearby. But, before he can perform his attack, the buzzer sounds and it slowly dies down, decreasing in strength as the color shifts from white, down to purple, red, then blue and finally green.
"Um, yeah, so, at this time, all of the HUC members who were deployed have been rescued from the disaster zone. It may seem anticlimactic, but with this, the Provisional Licensing Exam has officially been completed."
"It's over?" Raijin mutters as he takes a few deep breaths glancing around to everyone standing in a stunned silence.
"After we tally the scores, we'll announce the results here in the arena. Anyone injured should go to the infirmary. The rest of you are free to change clothes and wait wherever you like."
Raijin sighed, and simply used his quirk to sit by Aizawa while waiting.
"Shouldn't you change?" Aizawa seemingly glares at his student.
"Nah, I'm good for now. Considering Todoroki, almost definitely fucking failed today, I don't want to be in that changing room near him right now."
"Such profanity." Ms. Joke comments.
"You knew my mother, she swore like a sailor."
"Your mother?" She asks.
"LiveWire." Aizawa says bluntly and dryly.
"Oh! That must mean your Miss Asumi's son. Nice to meet ya."
"Yeah, I'm sure it is." Kyoreki shrugs her off. "So how long have you two been dating?" He asks Aizawa.
"Go change now." Aizawa orders, while Ms. Joke bursts out in laughter.
Roughly twenty minutes later, Mera speaks again, and everyone is back on their school uniforms. "Okay. Everyone, thanks for your hard work in the exams. Now, before I announce the results I should probably explain the way we evaluated you. Between HUC and those of us at the Heroes Public Safety Commission, we had a two-fold demerit system that we used to determine your total scores. In other words, we were evaluating you based on how few mistakes you made in a crisis situation. Anyway, the names of those who passed are listed here in alphabetical order. Keep my words in mind as you search the screen for your name."
Raijin swiftly scans his way down to the R's, and finds himself quickly, by the time he's found himself Bokasu is already cheering and wooing on himself and some of the others like Ashido and Asui. "Thank, fuck." Raijin sighs as he finds his name. Raijin steps over, surprising many of his classmates and puts a fist on Todoroki's chest. "You were a fucking idiot."
"I'm aware."
"Next chance you get, do better." Raijin stares into Todoroki's eyes.
"I will." He replies with a solemn expression.
"Todoroki!" The pair hear Inasa Yoarashi shout, he approaches the pair before he bows, slamming his head against the floor again. "I'm sorry! It's my fault that you didn't pass the licensing exam. My focus was too narrow-minded. Forgive me!"
Raijin shrugs. "Eh, you both fucked each other up, honestly." He glances to Todoroki whose eyes remain on the ground. He then raises his gaze to Inasa.
"You're fine. I was the one who got us off to a bad start."
"But still..."
"And thanks to the things you said to me, I have a lot to think about."
"Holy crap. Did he really fail?" Ashido asks.
"How could two of our top classmates not pass the exam?" Sero asks from nearby.
"Shoulda been more careful what you said. Words are important ya know." Kaminari says to Bakugo, who's silently fuming, his gaze, and vengeful stare turns to Kaminari.
"Shut your mouth before I murder you and frame Raijin for it."
"Oi, don't drag me into your grave." Raijin smack Bakugo on the back of the head.
"So, next we'll give you the printouts of your results. They include a breakdown of your scores, so you'll know exactly what areas you need to improve on going forward. We lopped off points when you did something wrong. Fall below 50, and you were done. These demerits are itemized on your result forms, as you'll see, so I'd look at them.
Raijin is genuinely stunned to see his total at 95 points. The highest in the class. "How the fuck?" He asks as he compares his notes to Yaoyrozu's 94 points.
"What'd they dock ya for?" Bokasu asks.
"Standing around apparently." Raijin shrugs. "I was basically just a supervising coordinator for part of it. What about you?"
"87." Bokasu sighs. "Coulda done better. Most of my demerits were cause of improper handling of bodies while transporting when Gang Orca came out."
"It was a panic situation, you couldn't have done much worse."
"Yeah, I know."
"Anyway, moving forward. Those of you who passed can exercise the same authority as pro heroes, but only during emergency situations. In other words, fighting villains, saving the victims of criminal acts or accidents, you may act using your best judgement with no direct orders. Keep in mind that your every action from now on carries with it a deep responsibility toward bettering our society, and that the world is watching you. I'm sure you're aware that All Might, our greatest hero..." and like that Raijin tuned out immediately, he turned ignoring the announcement walking away to leave the arena as quickly as possible.
Once the exam was completely over, the students were given their licenses, Raijin was the first on the bus, he kept his music playing the entire bus ride, his eyes not focused on a single thing. Even when Yaoyorozu sat next to him there was no response. Just a stare into nothing.
Chapter End.
Post Chapter Scene
Once the students had returned to the dorms Raijin didn't go in with the others, instead he separated from them and walked towards the tree line between the 1A and 1B dorms.
"Kyoreki." Aizawa called out, this finally got his attention. "Where are you going?"
"To keep a promise to Kodai of Class 1B." He said bluntly, he continued walking not taking any time to wait for anymore questions. Once he was out of their line of sight many of the girls muttered to themselves, however two people remained silent watching. Momo Yaoyorozu and Aka Bokasu.
Raijin arrived at the sight where he and Yui had their picnic the night before and stood silently for a second before he turned to the sound of rustling leaves. He smiled softly as Yui entered the small clearing returning the smile upon eye contact. "So, how'd you do?" He asks with a small amount of playfulness added back to his voice. Yui tilts her head, almost sarcastically as she raises her license up showing it to Kyoreki. "Huh, the picture's not bad. They really got your cute side." Raijin comments, earning a playful slap on the shoulder. "Hey, I'm not lying, damn." She pouts at him as he rolls his eyes. "What you want me to lie and not call you cute?" She extends her hand out, finally Kyo receives the actual message she was trying to say. "Oh, you want to see mine. Aight." He shrugs and tosses his license into her hand. She stares at it for a few seconds then smiles as she hands it back to him. "No, don't you dare say that I'm cute, I'm adorable, get it right." Yui rolls her eyes and hugs Kyoreki, he pauses for a second and pats her back as he enjoys the embrace a bit. "Ah. Hugs are nice."
