❁Chapter Two❁

The empty track from earlier was now raging.

People crowded around everywhere, sipping their beers in red solo cups, and sharing drags among friends. Ripper's car was already set up at the start/finish line, and now all we were waiting for was the Tampa gang to get their asses here.

On top of the highest point, which was a small hill that overlooked the track, Sly, Wesley, Dime, Scram, Steel, Ricky, and I sat on our towels, drinking the beers I had brought home with me from work, and smoking just like everyone else, except we were secluded from the crowded fiesta below us. The music was blaring, and people were dancing, and having a great time. It was race night, and race night was the most exciting night for us all.

All of our heads turned to a tall blonde who was making her way up towards us. Of course, it was Beth McShay, or as we called her, Foxy.

Foxy was the most responsible girl around being one of the oldest. Her and Sean have been dating for about a year now, and basically led the whole gang together. We all looked up to her, even though she wasn't exactly the nicest person to know. Bottom line is, she kept everyone in tact, and always did what was right, even if it meant she would earn a few new enemies who used to be friends.

"I should've learned by now not to wear heels to these races." She complained, un-strapping her heels, and handing them to me, "Can ya' take care of these for me?" I nodded, and took her shoes, placing the black stiletto's right beside me.

"Foxy, Foxy, is so moxy." Scram sang.

"Don't use those childish lyrics on me now Scram. You know how much it sickens me." She demanded, causing Scram to put his hands up.

"Just tryna' have some fun. What's got you so on edge?" He asked, watching her as she sat down quickly, and let out a sigh of relief.

"I've heard some news that the Tampa gang's brought in some kinda' secret weapon." She explained, "Apparently, he's got some talent. The people down there can't stop buzzing about it."

"Y'know his name?" Dime asked, Foxy nodding, but taking a short long breath before replying. You could tell she was tired.

"Someone named Dean Yates." Janie and I both exchanged awkward, wide-eyed looks. We recognized the name, but nobody else seemed too, "You've heard of him?"

I nodded 'yes', "Bliss used to talk about him a while back. Said she's dated him before, and that he's one wicked racer." I recalled three months ago, when Babee popped back in last. She couldn't stop rambling about that Dean Yates, and how amazing he was. But a few weeks ago, I got a letter from her, ranting about how he's one dick-of-a-guy.

"Well, shit." She cursed under her breath, "You think Ripper's gotta chance here?"

"Ripper's the boss man. The only time he ever loses, is to yo' boy Slasher, and that's on purpose." Wesley noted.

"Yea." Steel added, "Ripper 'll tear that Keene Dates guy right up."

Ricky nudges his best friend, "It's Dean Yates."

"Whatever." Steel rolled his eyes, before laying his back down on the grass, and looking up at the sky that was now a dark blue with millions of tiny stars twinkling around it.

Foxy shrugged, "Y'all are probably right for a change." Everyone chuckled at her mild insult. We all knew is was pretty much true, but it still had a sense of humor to it.

"There's my lady." Sean's voice appeared out of nowhere, and we all looked up as he kneeled down a bit, and planted a huge kiss on Foxy.

"Hey baby." She sang, kissing him once more. Sean tackled her in a tight hug, and they rolled around on the grass a bit.

"What's all the dead faces for?" Sean asked, noticing our semi-worried looks.

"We-"

"Nothing." Wesley sharply cut off Ricky, before he could finish what he was about to say, or any of us got the chance to speak.

"Whatever." Sean dismissed our faces, "I just came to get my baby doll ready. The Tampa gang's about to arrive here any moment." Foxy grabbed her shoes giving me a small 'Thank You' before disappearing down the hill with Sean.

I watched her tan, slender legs follow Sean's at a fast pace. Foxy was fit, and some type of beauty as well. She had an unusual look to her. Almost a Marina and the Diamonds meets Melanie Martinez look. Her two front teeth had a small gap between them, but unlike most others, she could rock it. Her hair was a mix of blonde and brown. Occasionally she'd get part of it dyed pink, but most of the time it was her natural color. Her eyes were blue, but not much of the color. They were pale, yet stood out like they were just as bright as the sky.

"Pass me one." I nodded towards Dime, as he took out one of his many packs of cigarettes. After taking one for himself, and holding it in his mouth, he passed me the box, putting it away after I had taken one for me. He pulled out his lighter and lit both of our cigs.

"Remember you only supposed to have one." He mumbled with the cig still wedged between his teeth, as he struggled with putting his bright red lighter in his back pocket. I rolled my eyes. Sean made it a rule that I could only have one cigarette a day, and five minus beers a night. I hated how he would only put this restriction on me, but if I happened to have more than five drinks a night, I'd be way past drunk. Or if I had more than one cig a day, I'd be dead.

The crowd below started to boo unexpectedly, and a few loud engines could be heard. All of us turned our heads to the parking lot of the track, as several bright, yellow cars came into view, "The Tampa gang." Wesley muttered under his breath.

The Tampa gang was known as one of the worst competitors, but we still hated their guts. They may suck at racing, but their mouths just don't quit. All they do at these races is talk shit about everyone, start fights, and drain us of our liquor. One time, they came so close to destroying our track, Sean flipped out and wailed their leader, Boy Sid in the face. The gang fled, and now they're back for their 'revenge' I guess. Probably why they brought in Dean Yates.

Unlike other gangs, Boy Sid made his racers paint their cars yellow. It means some symbolic thing to him- one we could never really figure out. I personally thought that yellow was a hideous color, but it wasn't my choice, and or position to say. Sean let's everyone use whatever colored car they want. Our gang is one of the most laid back, and un-organized one's around. If I'm ever able to race publicly, and get my own racing car, I'd want it to be a fuschia pink color.

I watched as the Tampa crew stepped out of their cars, and started talking to Sean, Foxy, and Ripper. Judging by the look Sean had on his face, I could tell things weren't in a good place. Boy Sid had his hands flying everywhere- he looked like he was going crazy. I knew I had to get a closer look at this. I took another long drag from my cigarette, before blowing the smoke back out as I stood up.

"I'm going to find out what they're saying." I announced, "I'll be right back."

"I'll go too. Looks like Slasher may need an extra hand or two." Dime said, standing up and following me down the hill n' through the small crowd surrounding Sean and Boy Sid.

"Wha-d'ya mean he can't race tonight? I already told you, my leg's broken." Boy Sid pointed out, raising the leg of his jeans far enough for us to see the bright green cast on his leg. I looked around to see his un-noticed crutches being held by who looked like Finn Donague, Boy's second-in-command you could say.

"Dean Yates wasn't originally on the board, Sid." Sean explained, "Therefore, he can't race." The Tampa gang groaned, and shouted harsh things in Sean's direction.

"Is that really why? Or is it because ol' Nathan here's chickenin' out." Sid grinned revealing his set of yellow, and metal replaced teeth. I threw up a little in my mind.

"You and I both know very well I ain't scared of nobody." Ripper spoke up, "So shush your crusty mouth, and play by the world-known rules. Is it that hard, god damn it."

The Tampa crew began to start chanting, "Let him race! Let him race! Let him race." Eventually, even our people were chanting along with them. Sean and Foxy gave each other a look, which showed me that they had no idea what to do. Should they let him race, or cause them to forfeit. The people came here to see race's, not watch forfeit's. That's why I decided to step in. Sean would listen to me.

"Ripper here kicks ass for a living." I yelled, pushing my way through he crowd in to the center where my brother, Nathan, Beth, and Boy Sid were, "Let him race, Sean. When are we ever the type of people who back down because of a little unfairness?"

I glanced at Ripper who had a small smirk on his face, but quickly changed back to my brother as my cheeks grew semi-red. It's the first time he's ever come close to smiling at me, or something I've said.

Sean nodded, "Fine. The race will continue." The crowd roared in excitement, as Dean Yates got back in his car, and drove to the finish line where Ripper's car already was.

"Yates is gon' destroy you." Boy Sid winked a cringe-y wink at Ripper, who just rolled his eyes, and flipped him off, "And next time" He added, "Keep your frilly little sis out of it. This is the real deal and not some fantasy league seen in them movies."

"Who you callin' frilly." I spat, launching forward about to punch him- but being stopped quickly as Sean pulled my back, "I ain't no frilly girl, you wide-eyed Post Malone looking troll." A few people 'ooh'ed' at my insult, just as Sean spun me around, and shoved me off back towards the hill.

"Make sure she goes back up by Wesley." Sean said to Dime. Dime followed with a nod, and walked behind me with his hand on my back. I kept stopping, to look back at Boy Sid, but Dime just kept pushing me ahead towards the hill.

"Son of a bitch." I cursed under my breath, "What is it with men always thinking they're so superior compared to us girls?"

"Just keep walking hot-head." Dime joked, getting me to smile just a little. When I reached the top of the hill again, everyone was laughing, and high-fiving me.

"Didn't think such a frail lil' thing like you had such anger inside ya'." Scram laughed, patting me on the back. I noticed the cigarette in his mouth, and realized I must've dropped mine somewhere down by the crowd.

"Give me a drag, I lost my cig." I demanded, handing out my hand for Scram to put his cigarette in. He blew out his last puff of smoke, before handing me his near-finished smoke-stick. I inhaled a large amount, before blowing it back out, and handing the stick back to Scram.

I sat back down next to Sly, leaning back as I watched the scene below me. Sean was standing between Dean n' Ripper, most likely going over the rules. After the must-have handshake, the two racers parted ways to their own cars.

Dean's car was yellow, and looked like the rest of the Tampa crew's cars, but Ripper's car- It was a dark purple. A beautiful, shiny, purple. The sides lit up in the night, including inside his car as it glowed blue everywhere so he could read the labels he needed. The car door's would only open by sliding up, instead of out. The wheels had light purple where the normal silver would be if this was an average everyday car. Ripper spent most of his time at the shop, and invested all of his saved up money on that car. Just like all the other boys. Each car was hand, put together by themselves. Occasionally they'd get some help from each other, but they mostly worked on it alone. Well, how else would people like us get such an amazing car like that? We definitely don't have the funds to buy that in one piece. No, us 'street rats' take a crappy old junk car, and turn it into a million dollar one ourselves.

"I'm nervous for him." Sly leaned over and whispered in my ear, for she didn't want the boys to hear because she knew they'd overwhelm her with their shouting, and excitement.

"So am I." I responded, mirroring her actions, "I know he's amazing, and that he'll most likely win- but Dean seems to be a fierce competitor. I'm scared he might run him off the track."

Sly adjusted her position, "That brings me to another question. Why do you call it street racing, when you just race around and old looking race track? Wouldn't it just be called racing?"

I thought about this for a while. It never really occurred to me why it was called street racing, and not just regular racing. Our 'ancestors' built this track for us a while back, and they would still call it street racing. I guess we just picked it up from the people before us. I mean, sometimes we do use the street instead of our dirt track, but every time we do, someone on Lime Street would call in a complaint, and the cops would show up and bust everybody. Maybe this way the cops can't bust us for "disturbing the peaceful streets, and disrupting the people around [us]" like what we usually get caught for.

I shrugged my shoulders in response to her, "I dunno." I partially did, but I wasn't exactly one-hundred percent sure yet, "I'll ask one of my brothers later."

Sly nodded, and we turned our attention back to the track. Both males were in their cars, ready for the flag foxy was holding to come down, so they could shoot past her, and begin racing like their lives depended on it. The rule here, is that you both have to cough up five-hundred dollars. Whoever wins, takes both stacks. Whoever loses, walks away with nothing.

"Gentlemen." Sean yelled, "Start your engines!" Right on cue, they turned their car's on, and the engines roared. Both teased the crowd a couple times, by doing what I did earlier, where they would fully step on the gas, but leave their cars on park mode. In my head I kept praying (which was very odd, for I've never been a child of God) that Ripper would end up okay. I wanted him to win and show that loud mouth trap queen, Boy Sid, who's boss.

Foxy took her place safely in-between the two cars, where once they took off, she wouldn't be in the way. She held the old, checkered flag up in her right hand, ready to sling it down, allowing the racers to zoom off. She was always the one who got to do these type of things. Sean would make her dress up in some hot outfit, and start the race.

Tonight, Foxy was wearing a black laced bralette, with a mixed animal printed tight skirt, and black, six-inch stiletto's, the same ones I got to take from her earlier. Her hair was messily left, but she still looked amazing.

She looked around with a devious smile, continuing to stand in a sexy pose that caused Sean to examine her like he usually would do. I would always silently laugh to myself every time I saw Sean biting his lip and moving his eyes up and down her figure. I've never said anything, but if I did, he'd most likely stop- and there goes my entertainment.

"Ready!" She screamed, "...Set....Go!" As soon as she yelled 'Go' the flag went down, and the cars took off.
