It wasn’t long before they were on the plane. Anna and Eddie were a few rows in front of them and for that, Spencer was thankful. She watched with a frown as Toby put their luggage in the overhead compartment; he hadn’t looked at her since the incident in the limo. Who could blame him? She was a little shocked too. Neither of them had excepted a simple ride to the airport to end like that.

The slight numbness in her lips was a main indication that the kiss had lasting effects. She felt out of it and a little angered at the stupid television show they had signed up for. That was not how their first kiss was supposed to happen.

But then again, she reasoned. Not like it would have happened any other way.

The second he sat down next to her, she opened her mouth. “Freaked out?” she questioned.

He sighed, forcing a smile. Spencer didn’t like that at all. Toby didn’t do forced smiles, not with her. “Just surprised,” he said awkwardly.

She crossed her arms over her chest, watching him intently. His hair was perfect as usual, aside from one strand falling on his forehead, but she figured she kind of liked the look on him. His expressive green eyes wider than usual and she knew exactly was he was thinking, like always: What did I get myself into? “Okay,” she said sternly, grabbing his face to maintain eye contact. “That was awkward.”

Not really, they both thought in unison..

Since he thought that’s what Spencer thought, he nodded. “Yes.”

They both chuckled at the same time, the simple act seeming to break down the strange, unfamiliar tension between them. After a few seconds, Spencer dropped her hands from his face and leaned against the seat. “Tell me what’s bugging you.”

“I don’t know,” Toby sighed, the wall he built up already crashing down at her mercy. “I just don’t want this whole reality show thing to mess up or relationship.”

She shrugged and grinned at him. “It won’t. A kiss is what you make it. Remember in the seventh grade when we played spin the bottle and it landed on you and Mark?” She hardly even got out the last line because she was giggling like crazy at the memory.  She could still vividly remember the shocked looks on Mark and Toby’s faces as they realized who the empty Dr. Pepper can landed on.

Toby laughed and rolled his eyes, using his shoulder to push her. “That’s a terrible example,” she huffed with a smile and a shake of the head. “I ended up kissing Vera instead.”

“Exactly!” Spencer said a little too loudly, making a few people turn back and glare. Toby chuckled. “But when you kissed her, you were still in shock that it didn’t even matter. See? A kiss is only what you make of it!”

He rested his head against the seat, just watching her, enjoying the grin that formed on her grin at the simple memory.  “Alright, I get the point,” he smiled. “A kiss is just what you make it.”

Spencer beamed, but then suddenly got serious. “Okay…we have to make a pact.”

                “Agreed,” Toby quipped pleasantly.

“Allow me to do the decency….” Tilting his head up proudly and intensely, he extended his pinky, just like they’d always done when they were ten. Giggling again from the playful expression on his face, she wound her pinky through his. With a voice full of mock authority, he said, “Being on the show will not mess up our friendship. Whether we’re the first to get kicked or the last couple standing, we’ll walk out of it the same way we walked in.”

Spencer nodded in agreement. “Deal.” Amused at how faithful they were to their childhood concept of the pinky swear, she freed their fingers and sat back. All tension immediately put to ease, she glanced over to her best friend with a huge grin. Already, his eyes were closed and his breathing was easier, his chest rising and falling with simple breathes. The one thing that never changed about Toby: he could fall asleep anywhere and everywhere. His lips were slightly upturned in a small, sleepy smile, that one same lock of dirty blonde falling on his forehead.

She wondered if he knew how perfect he was.

                Her lips were still tingling.
