“You okay?” Toby questioned nervously once he settled Spencer on her bed at the Hastings house. Honestly, she looked as if as if she’d never been in there before; she clutched the sheets as best as she could, breathing in the scent of old books and journals. He chuckled. “I take that as a yes?”
Giggling, Toby paid attention to every look on her face, from the way she took in everything without moving her gaze from the bookshelf, to the comforted half smile that peacefully rested on her face. “I was so miserable there.”
Tilting his head, Toby watched her curiously. “You heard what the nurse said. Keep the bandages on 24/7 or you’ll end up right back there. We don’t need you getting an infection.”
She nodded. “Deal.”
Smiling softly, Toby rose from the chair he was sitting in and moved to her side. Already, she was dressed in her casual clothes: a blue shirt with owls on it that she bought at Areopostale and a pair of high-waisted skinny jeans. So gentle she could hardly feel it, he brushed her fingers along the side of her arm. “Just let me know if you need any pain pills, okay? I can fill your prescription.” His gaze intently scanned over her body for more bruises, something he did a lot lately. “I’m your own personal nurse until you get better.”
