Toby woke up with a jolt. He most have fallen asleep while keeping Spencer company. His head, which had previously been pressed up against the sheets, began to throb with an upcoming migraine. What time was it anyway?
Letting out a heavy sigh, he reached over to place his hand on Spencer’s. When he did this though, the action chilled him to the bone. His fingers were ice cold. He frowned, quickly releasing her hand and heading into the hallway to find a nurse.
But no one was in the hallway. “Hello?” he asked. His voice echoed. “Anyone here?” No response.
He exhaled in aggravation, rolling his eyes and heading back to the room. Toby slowly flipped on the lights in hopes of finding a set of blankets in the closet. Luckily, he came across a white, cotton sheet past the door and quickly rushed to cover Spencer up. It was kind of ridiculous, how every little thing seemed to worry when it came to her; he had to admit, after the accident, he’d been scared out of his wits.
Toby slowly covered Spencer with the sheet, his eyes scanning over her body as she did so, a tiny gesture that allowed her to watch out for any new bruises or signs of bleeding. But when his gaze landed on her face, his stomach swayed.
Her colorless eyes were open. Not moving, or blinking; just…open. Empty.
That was when he turned around and noticed the straight line on the heart monitor.
Toby let out a bloodcurdling scream.
“Toby!” Ezra was frantically shaking her shoulders.
He gasped, jumping in the chair he was sitting in, dreadfully looking around. “Spencer!”
Ezra frowned. “She’s okay, Toby…you were just having a bad dream. She’s okay, I promise…”
Quickly catching his bearings, Toby’s gaze fell on a sleeping Spencer across from her in the ICU room. Her chest was barely rising and falling with every intake and exhale of breath, but rising and falling nevertheless. He let out a sigh of relief. “What if she doesn’t wake up, Ezra?”
“He will. You heard what the doctor said.”
He clenched his fists. “It’s been three days.”
Sighing, Ezra placed his hand on Toby’s shoulder, staring down at his friend solemnly. “Let’s get you home, okay? We can come back later. You haven’t been out of here in over twenty-four hours.”
He reluctantly tore his eyes off of Spencer. “I…what if something while we’re gone.”
Ezra pulled Toby up. “Then the nurse will take care of it. Melissa’s still here…if Spencer wakes up, she won’t be alone.”
Finally, Toby agreed. After all, Melissa wasn’t going anywhere that was for sure. She hadn’t left the hospital in the past three days, surviving off a small duffel bag that Mrs. Montgomery had dropped off.
He walked past her on the way out, but he didn’t bother speaking to her. Melissa hadn’t really been in the friendliest of moods for the past few days; Toby figured he got confused, considering she was so bent on proving everyone that he didn’t care about anyone but herself. But yet, there she was, eagerly waiting for the moment to arrive when her little sister would finally open her eyes again. Spencer was shocked once they finally got outside. Only expecting to see cars in front of the lobby, he was quite surprised to see an entire crowd in front of the doors. There were men holding cameras, women with microphones, and people frantically scribbling down in notebooks as she walked outside. There was an endless echo of, “Toby, Toby, is it true that this was an attempted suicide?”
“Toby, Toby, over here!”
“Toby, is it true that Spencer was drunk when she got into the car accident?”
“Mr. Cavanaugh! Toby! Why are you spending so much time pining after your ex-girlfriend?”
“Because she’s my best friend!” he snapped, sending glares at all the reporters.
Ezra and Toby rushed to the car, quickly slamming the door. “Get a life!” Ezra shouted furiously before speeding off. Toby buried his head in her hands, letting out an exhausted sigh.
Ezra glanced over at him and sighed a bit. “I know…it sucks. But you know, it’s not entirely bad, the publicity. ‘Thinking of Spencer’ was a trending topic on Twitter last night, and I’ve been watching Not Alone. Everyone’s pretty shaken up. Jenna even looks sincerely worried. Madison cried when they told her the news in the interview…she actually cried!”
Toby grinned just a bit, glancing out at the road. It was nice to know some people cared, although it seemed the paparazzi didn’t. “Maybe I should give Madison a call sometime,” he wondered aloud.
Ezra smiled softly. “Alright,” he said after a brief pause. “Let’s stop at your house, grab some more clothes….and then we’ll head right back to the hospital. I think Caleb, Aria, and Alison want to stop by tonight too.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Toby said
