Toby glanced at his phone, expecting to read a simple yet sweet goodnight text from Spencer. But his phone had no messages. Huh. He furrowed his brows in confusion.
Maybe her phone died, he told himself, swearing he wouldn’t turn into one of those obsessive boyfriends. For some reason though, he couldn’t shake the uneasiness in his stomach. Perhaps the excitement of the past few weeks was catching up to him.
Lugging up the stairs with his big suitcase, he let out a sigh of relief was he was finally in his room again.
Nothing had changed; his matchbox car was still in the exact spot it always had been, and the photos on the dresser remained untouched. Laughing to himself, he strutted over to the bed and fell against it.
After a few quiet and serene moments, his phone started to vibrate in his pocket, causing him to grin. It was about time Spencer finally sent him something.”
Not bothering to look at the caller ID, Toby laughed and instantly pressed the answer button. “What took you so long?” he questioned playfully, rolling on his stomach.
“Toby, it’s Melissa.”
His body flooded with confusion. “Melissa? Why are you…”
She interrupted him without even hearing his question. “It’s Spencer. I figure you’d want to know since you’re all she ever talks about and she’s going to want to see you once she wakes up.” Her voice was dripping with mockery, but he could tell she was talking about something extremely urgent. Toby felt his stomach drop.
“When she wakes up? What does that…?”
“If she’s not awake already. I bet it’s nothing too bad.” He could recognize the self-assurance in Melissa’s voice, an odd thing to itself, and it gave him chills. Something bad was happening. Something very bad.
“Melissa!” he demanded. “Where are you?”
“Driving to the hospital,” she answered, voice full of aggravation. He was clearly the last person she wanted to be talking to. “There was an accident.”
Then, she hung up. She just hung up on him.
Toby bit back his horrified tears.
