Out Of The Frying Pan And Into The Fire

~Mark

"Are we anywhere close to a hospital?" Sean huffed. "My arms are getting tired." "We should be getting close, okay?" John replied patiently. "I could use a good break too." I mumbled under my breath quietly. Aaron heard me anyway. "Me too." He whispered back. No one really has talked the entire time since we found Signe until now. About ten minutes later, I could see the tip of the hospital from where I was standing. "Do you want me to carry her for you?" John offered. "No, I'm fine, really." Sean assured him. Sweat dotted his forehead and his legs shook with every step he took. Suddenly as he took another step he crumpled to the ground. I dove towards Signe and caught her head with my hands and gently laid her beside Sean. "Sean?" I lightly patted his cheek. Sean remained on the ground, out cold. "Dehydration. He hasn't had water for days." John observed. "I'll be fine." Sean slurred in his sleep right before he vomited onto the road. "You need to drink some water." I nudged Sean with my flask. He waved it away like it was a pesky insect. "We need to save supplies." Sean insisted. "We need you to stay alive, now drink the damn water!" Aaron demanded. Sean looked up at Aaron for a brief second, his crystal blue eyes filled with fear and sadness. "Can someone hand me some water then?" Sean asked weakly with a slight grin. I quickly dug through my black backpack and tossed Sean an unopened water bottle. He nodded in appreciation, then drained half of the bottle in one gulp. "Sorry I held up the group." Sean apologized as he scooped Signe up again bridal style. "I'm just glad you're okay." I slung my bag back over my shoulder and we continued our journey. By the time we got inside the hospital, everyone except Sean looked ready to collapse. "I'll look around for medical supplies. You guys can stay here and rest." Sean left us in the reception room and walked deeper inside the hospital, still carrying Signe. "London Chest used to be one of the most important hospitals in all of England. Now it's reduced to a scavenging point." John sighed bitterly. From inside the hallway, I heard Sean scream. "Wait here!" John commanded before bursting through the double doors and running through the hallway

"No, you get away from her!" I desperately punched and kicked at the Uncured that was clinging onto Signe's leg. She was finally conscious again and was scrambling towards me while screaming my name. "Sean!" She cried as the Uncured pulled her farther away from me. From behind me, someone burst through the door. I whipped my head around to see who it was. John was running towards me pointing at Signe. When I turned back around, the Uncured were climbing out the window with her. "Don't you dare take her!" I roared. I darted over to the window with John beside me. Abruptly, the Uncured released her. I jumped forward and reached as far as I could towards her long, slender fingers. I could feel the wind billowing around me as I touched her fingertips. "I love you." She whispered. A single tear snaked down her cheek before she landed on the concrete sidewalk below with a bone crunching thud. Stunned, I slumped to the floor in despair, my head in my hands. "Sean-" John started to speak, then thought better of it and closed his mouth. Silently, I reached inside my hoodie pocket and extracted a red velvet box. I fingered the lid hesitantly, then I flipped the lid open, revealing a single diamond ring that sparkled in the dying light of the sun. On the inside of the lid was a poem I wrote for her in red ink. "They say you know true love when it's at first sight, but really what it takes is one very special night, when we talked and ate together, I knew you'd stay with me through all weather, so I beg, no I plea, will you please marry a guy like me?" I read silently in my head, repeating the words over and over in my head like a broken record. "I was going to propose to her the day everything went to hell. April nineteenth. Her twenty first birthday." I said coldly. "But now I'll never get the chance." I added in a whisper. Unshed tears welled up in my eyes, threatening to spill. John walked over to me and eased himself down next to me, his expression grim. "Sean, I'm so very sorry." John apologized sincerely. "So am I." I pushed myself up from the floor and kept my head hung as I strode out towards the others. Shame and guilt burned inside of me like a fire as my friends stared expectantly at me, waiting to see what I was going to say or do. I just remained silent as John explained for me what happened. At last the tears in my eyes fell like a waterfall as my friends gathered around me, trying to comfort me by saying apologies. Suddenly, Sherlock and an unfamiliar woman burst through the doors to the reception room. "Who was that person that fell?" Sherlock questioned us. No one said a word. "Well? Tell me!" Sherlock strode over to me and shook me by the shoulders. "Sherlock, stop it!" John shoved Sherlock's hands off of me. "It is-was, my girlfriend...Signe Hansen." I stuttered, trying to keep from crying even more. "Don't you dare mess with my friend! Can't you tell he's upset?!?" Mark stood in front of me defensively. Sherlock seemed to tower over Mark, but Mark stood his ground. Sherlock glared down at him, then finally turned away from him in annoyance.

"Molly, look up there!" I pointed over at the London Chest hospital that we were right across the street from. A screaming woman was being dangled from the window of the top story. Moments later, Sean reached forward to grab her, but she slipped from his grasp. "Oh my god." Molly gasped in horror as the woman fell from three stories all the way down to the concrete in front of us. My mind whirled rapidly like a whirlwind. "The Uncured did that to get our attention, but they accidentally dropped the woman, thinking Sean had a hold of her, but he obviously didn't." I deduced. "When she was released, Sean was reaching for her, and the top story to be high enough that we would see her, even from far away." "We need to check on the others." Molly started running towards the door. I followed close behind her. "Who was that person that fell?" I inquired as I strode into the reception room. Mark, Aaron, and John stared back at me. Sean had his head hung, tears in his eyes. "Well, tell me!" I shook Sean by the shoulders to get him to speak. "It is-was my girlfriend...Signe Hansen." Sean choked out. "Don't you dare mess with my friend! Can't you tell he's upset?!?" Mark stood in front of me, his eyes burning with anger. I gave no reply. Instead, I turned away from Mark, impatience boiling inside of me. "Lets just get the hell out of here." Aaron suggested. Everyone murmured their agreements except Sean who still remained silent, his eyes glued to the floor. "We should find someplace to rest." I stated stiffly. "Especially for Sean who can't even defend himself." I taunted. I needed to see if he could actually fight if he needed to, so best way to make him fight is by making him angry. "I can defend myself just fine." Sean protested. "I need him to fight me so I can see how well he actually can defend himself." I whispered to John. "Sherlock-" John opened is mouth to argue, but before he could say another word, I punched Mark square in the nose. "That's it!" Sean tackled me to the floor, his face bright red with fury. "Don't ever try that again. Ever." With that, he drove his fist hard into my gut, then walked back towards Mark. I wheezed in pain, my air rushing out of me like a deflated balloon. Aaron was helping him stand and John was fussing over Mark's nose to make sure it wasn't broken. "His tackle was sloppy, but that can be improved." I snorted in amusement once I caught my breath again.

"Mark are you okay?" Aaron helped me stumble to my feet. Dazed, I only nodded as I watched Sean tackle Sherlock to the ground and punch him in the stomach. "Your nose isnt broken, which that's pretty lucky, although you will have a very large bruise." John informed me. "Mark, did the bastard hurt ye?" Sean inquired, scanning my face for any wounds. "I'm fine, really. Thanks for defending me. You're a great friend." I gave a small smile. Sean grinned back in return, the sparkle of humor back in his eyes. "Sorry I beat your friend up by the way." Sean chuckled meekly. "Don't worry, you did exactly what he wanted you to do." John assured him. "He wanted to see how well you can defend yourself." "I'd give you an A for ass kicking." I chuckled. "Um guys? We should get moving." Aaron stated nervously. At the door was a large horde of Uncured. "So, running's a good plan, right?" I inquired. "No." Sherlock grabbed my arm as I turned to go. "I got this." The lady stepped in front of the group. Silence reigned inside the reception room until suddenly she was yanked closer towards the horde. "The Uncured have gotten more unstable!" Sherlock fought against the wave of Uncured, but there was too many. The woman was bitten, then carried off farther away in front of the door and eaten raw. Her screams echoed through the door as she cried for Sherlock. "Sherlock! Help!" She begged. In my mind, I chanted that there was nothing we could do, but I couldn't help but feel like we could help in some way. Sherlock and John was outside trying to get rid of the Uncured peacefully, but they wouldn't leave until they had eaten everything, including the bones. "We need to get out of here." All of a sudden, Sean started sprinting out of the hospital. I cursed under my breath as I struggled to catch up to him. "Sherlock, John!" I called. John took one last glance behind him, then jogged to me with Sherlock close behind. We spent what felt like hours upon hours of running and until we had reached Buckingham palace at last. We were not alone there.
