Chapter 13

I knew Blaire encouraged the idea of Beckett and I being a couple. Beckett was the first guy I started trusting again. He couldn't be attracted to me. His banter was just banter nothing more. Besides, I didn't look like the type of girl he would be interested in anyway.

I was worried that by being dressed like this I would of give him the wrong impression. I didn't want him to think that I was trying to impress him. I sat at my desk attempting to complete the rest of my assignment.

I was going to be working nine-hour shifts on the weekend and I knew I would be extremely exhausted to even open a textbook when I got home from work.

A knock came on my door and I woke up with a huff. I had a strange pain in my lower back. I wasn't even twenty yet and I had aches and pains. I shudder to imagine how I'd be when I'm sixty.

I opened the door to find Beckett leaning against my door frame. He was dressed in black jeans and a white shirt. "Wow," he said looking me up and down. "You look like the woman of my dreams."

"Please don't tease me," I said and he chuckled.

"You look great," he said walking past me and flopping himself on my bed.

"I'm starting to feel like you think you welcome here now," I said walking over to my desk to put away my textbooks. Add OCD to my list of idiosyncrasies.

"Please no pretending to hate me tonight," he said in exhaustion.

I gasped. "Who said I was pretending." He rolled his eyes and stood up and walked over to me.

"Then say it," he said standing just inches away from me.

"Say what, Beckett," he brought his face just inches away from mine.

"Say Beckett I don't like you." He lowered his head to look me in the eyes. He had a victorious smirk on his face but I wasn't going to give him satisfaction.

I looked him back in the eyes."Fine I don't," I said and he pulled away.

"No, you don't mean that," he chuckled and a humorous smile formed on my face.

"I just said it. Didn't I?"

"You guys ready to go," Callum asked popping up at my door with his arm around Blaire.

Blaire looked amazing. She was wearing a black crop top covered with a grey see-through blouse that she matched with blue ripped jeans and black high tops.

Callum was dressed in a grey graphic shirt that had the image of a black wolf's head printed on the front of it and he was wearing black cuffed jeans. I looked at the way Beckett was dressed and I finally got that term Balire mentioned earlier.

Couple goals.

"I think we should leave now if we want to get parking," Callum said looking down at his watch.

We walked down the stairs to say goodbye to Himari. She was sitting on the couch with Ozzy stroking the back of his head with the back of her index finger. "Himi are you sure you don't want to come with us?" Blaire asked and she shook her head.

"The smell of motor oil mixed with noise and alcohol. No thank you." I envied Himari at this moment. She was in her onesy watching TV. She looked quite content and there was no chance of us convincing her to join us.

We walked out of the house and to Callum's car. "So are you excited to go to your very first motorcycle event," Beckett asked and I raised an eyebrow?

"Why did I agree to this again."

"Because I'm quite persuasive," he said, straightening his jacket.

Since Callum was driving. Beckett sat in the back of the car with me. Callum started the car and began to rev the engine. "Babe," Blaire said in a warning tone.

"Sorry," he apologized and stopped revving. I was yet to experience Callum's driving, but I could already tell Beckett and him were the same. They both seemed to have a need for speed.

"So who else is coming?" Blaire asked Callum.

"Just Anthony, Ember, and Trent."

"Urgh, you invited Ember," Beckett said face-palming himself.

"I hate her," Blaire mumbled.

"Guys you know I didn't have a choice ever since she got with Anthony. I tried to invite Luca but he didn't want to come and Ross went home for the weekend."

"Wait which friend haven't I met yet Ross or Luca?" Blaire asked.

"Luca, he barely wants to hang out anymore. I don't know what's up with him lately," Callum answered and he sounded sad.

"So why doesn't anyone like this girl Ember?" I asked and Blaire looked at me through the car's review mirror.

"She's only the campus whore," she said nonchalantly.

"Babe," Callum gasped, trying to hide his laughter.

"Whore is putting it lightly," Beckett said and shuddered next to me. "She makes my skin crawl. I can't believe Anthony would date that." The topic of their unsavory friends was closed after that final comment.

Beckett and I got into a conversation for the next forty-eight minutes. He told me that he was forced to have lunch with Adrienne (the beret girl) alone. He said that he could barely understand her sometimes because she would start mumbling in French.

Traffic was barely moving and I was starting to feel anxious about meeting Beckett and Callum's friends. They would probably think Beckett is insane for hanging out with someone as boring as me.

The road became narrower and there weren't any cars in sight. "It's a secret entrance to the arena's parking lot," Callum said to Blaire. "Our friend Newton showed it to us."

He drove into the arena's gates and there were barely any cars on this side of the parking lot compared to the part right at the front that was jammed with cars hooting at each other for a space to move.

We got out of the car and walked up to the arena. Callum handed the guy in the window the tickets and he let us through the electronic gate.

The cheering of people could be heard from even outside the arena. The stands were filled and everyone was cheering and raising their glasses as motorcycles zipped pass with immense speed. Himari was right this place did reek of alcohol and motor oil.

We followed Callum up the bustling stands and found our seats right in the middle. The seats gave us a perfect view of what was happening below. Also, the smell of the fuel wasn't as pungent as it was in the lower parts of the stands.

"Hey, Beckett and Callum," A guy wearing a navy blue shirt greeted. He had neatly combed back black hair and an air of confidence about himself as he walked up to us.

"Trent," Beckett greeted back in a monotone.

"Blaire you look as stunning as ever. Remind me again on why you settled for this shaggy-haired monkey," he said grabbing Callum into a headlock and ruffling his hair.

"Hey watch it," Callum warned jokingly.

"I'm just kidding," he said releasing Callum. "Anyway who is this lovely lady?" he asked when his eyes fell on me.

"No one of interest to you," Beckett answered.

He moved to pass Callum and Blaire and came to stand in front of Beckett and me. "Hi, I'm Trent," he said extending a hand for me to shake.

"Liz," I said and he smiled.

"Is that short for Elizabeth?" he asked.

"Yeah, it is."

"My grandmother's name was Elizabeth," he then said and Beckett scoffed.

"I thought her name was Yvonne," Beckett interjected.

"I did have two grandmothers," Trent smirked and Beckett rolled his eyes.

"Stop being a nuisance and hitting on his girl," Another guy's voice said. I went out on a limb and guessed him to be Anthony. He was tall and he had a baseball cap covering his hair. The girl clutching onto his arm while sending me a not so pleasant look must have been Ember.

She was wearing a short body fit dress that sat mid-thigh and six-inch heels. I wondered how she made it up the stands with those heels. "Hi, I'm Anthony," the guy said.

"Liz," I smiled back.

"And I'm Ember," she said sending me a look I couldn't understand. It seemed like she didn't like me. She looked at Beckett and then looked back at me.

"How cute. You've settled," she said to Beckett and shot her attention to me again. She smiled down at me even though her smile didn't quite meet her eyes. I could tell she didn't already like me. I couldn't care less for her immature behavior.

"Unlike some people," Blaire said and she glared at Blaire.

She let go of her grip on Anthony's arm and lowered her head to look Blaire in the eyes. "Blaire, sweetheart heart always a pleasure," Ember said through gritted teeth. Blaire's hands balled into fists and Callum put his arm around her waist.

Blaire looked at Ember in a way I've never seen Blaire look at anyone. Ember brought out a side of Blaire I didn't even know existed. Blaire was scowling. The bubbly, cheerful Blaire was looking at someone in utter disgust. She must have hated Ember.

Anthony put his arm around Ember. "I think we should take our seats. The first race is about to start," he said pulling her back. They turned around and walked back down the row of seats together. Ember wrapped her arm around his arm again as they walked.

Trent cleared his throat awkwardly as we watched them walk down the row.
"Well, that was intense. Anthony sure can pick 'em," Trent said and Callum rolled his eyes.

"I do remember a certain someone who had a thing with Ember in our first year of university," Callum said and Trent's face paled.

"Oh I do remember you telling me such a story brother," Beckett said and we walked pass Trent who looked like someone just read his diary out loud

We took our seats. I sat next to Blaire and Beckett sat on the other side of me. "I could just throttle that bitch," Blaire said causing me to look at her in surprise. I looked over at Ember who was whispering something into Anthony's ear while her hands worked their way up to his arm.

Gross. I shuddered visibly and focused my attention on the motorcycles.

"Why do you hate each other so much?" I asked and Blaire took in a breath as she tried to calm herself.

"Before Himari and I could apply for campus housing we pledged to be apart of a sorority. Ember is apart of that sorority. Sorority life wasn't the kind of life I thought it would be. The girls there are horrible. They belittle and talk shit about each other all the time. There are parties every weekend and we were forced to attend even if we didn't want to. We were forced to dress a certain way to promote our house image. Sometimes they would pressure girls into going on dates with boys they didn't even like. That environment was just too toxic. Himari and I both wanted out so we decided to rent a house instead of putting up with all that drama. Ember holds a grudge she says Himari and I can't be trusted because we turned our back on our sisters and no one has ever done that to them before, but in my opinion, I bet tons of girls were just aching to leave. I think they were just too scared of the rumors the other girls would spread about them if they did," Blaire said rolling her eyes.

I never even thought of joining a sorority. I enjoyed the quiet, and living in a house filled with teenage girls just ready to stab each other in the back was not my idea of peace. I knew from the beginning what sororities were like. That's why I didn't even bother to think about applying for one. I was surprised to learn that Blaire and Himari used to be apart of one.

I focused my attention on the race. I didn't want to pry and ask Blaire any more questions. She was already on edge and I didn't know how to deal with a Blaire on the edge.

I didn't know what was happening in the race. It just looked like motorcycles going in circles to me. What was the point of this I had to wonder but Beckett, Callum, and Trent were at the edge of their seats? Engrossed or maybe hypnotized by the motorcycles going in circles.

I sat back in my seat and pulled out my phone. I had no social media accounts. Just a game of candy crush I've been playing since last year.

"Peanuts, popcorn, hotdogs," A vendor shouted walking up the stands.

"You want anything, Liz?" Beckett asked.

"No thanks," I said and he nodded.

"Wait a second are you playing candy crush?" He asked, sounding horrified.

"Noooo," I drawled out, moving my phone out of sight.

"Give it," he said and my eyes widened.

"What my phone?" I asked rhetorically. "But I don't know what's going on," I whined and he gave me a sympathetic look.

"Come on." He swung his arm around me pulling me to him. "You see the guy racing for Honda," he said and I followed his eyes.

"Yeah."

"That's Marc Marquez. He's the best."

Beckett got into a discussion about what was happening in the race. The way Beckett spoke about cars and motorcycles made his eyes twinkle like a kid who sees a new toy they want. It was his passion and yet he was studying to be a lawyer. I couldn't understand it.

After another two and a half hours. A commentator announced the final results and everyone cheered. The winner was Marc Marquez and Beckett was beaming as if he had won. We stood up from our seats and it felt good to stretch my legs. Even Callum was beaming with joy. "We are so going to watch the new Julia Robert's movie now," Blaire said to Callum and moved to walk out of the stands.

"No no, anything but Robert's," he pleaded and she chuckled.

"I guess I'll see you around Liz," Trent said appearing in front of me and Beckett put his arm around my shoulders.

Before I could reply. Beckett began pulling me away."Don't count on it," he told Trent before following Callum and Blaire down the stands.

"Why are you so mean to him?" I asked Beckett and he clenched his jaw.

"Don't be fooled by the nice guy act. Trent is cunning," Beckett said and I raised an eyebrow.

"How so?" I asked and he shook his head.

"Just don't trust him so easily okay. I know I can't tell you who you can and cannot be friends with but Trent is a total red flag."

"Okay," I repeated. I didn't want to argue with Beckett. Trent didn't seem so bad but I knew not to be so trusting. I needed to know Trent first before I could judge his character.

We got into the car and Callum drove us back to the housing complex. The boys were so pumped about the race results that they discussed every detail of the race on the way home.

The car pulled up to the driveway and Blaire got out first. "Finally," she said, running up to the house.

"Baby," Callum called after her chuckling.

"I swear Cal. I love you but I'll kill you if I have to hear another thing about motorsports." Callum chuckled as he followed Blaire into the house.

I heard the car door shut once more and then Beckett walked over to me.
"Thank you for agreeing to have fun with me tonight," he said nudging me with his elbow playfully. He stifled a yawn and a strand of hair fell onto his forehead.

"It was surprisingly okay," I admitted and he chuckled.

"You want to hang out again tomorrow?" He asked and I shook my head.

"I'm sorry but I'm working nine hours tomorrow and Sunday," I said and he nodded in understanding.

"It's okay."I'll pick you up on Monday then," he said pulling me into a hug.
His cologne was nice. It was musky. It took me a while to wrap my arms around Beckett. He pulled back and looked me in the eyes. He leaned in and that's when the car alarm went off.

"Don't be gross-out on the street you weirdos," Callum yelled and I tinged red.

"Seriously bro," Beckett said in exhaustion running a hand through his hair.

"Well goodnight boys," I said and walked up to the front door.

"Goodnight," they both chimed and then I heard them start to bicker.

"You the worst brother in the history of brothers," I heard Beckett tell Callum.

"Hey, wait a minute. Cane killed Abel," Callum tried to defend his case.

"That's right sleep with one eye open," Beckett threatened and I walked into the house before I could hear the rest of their conversation.

Was Beckett going to kiss me...

No. I didn't want to believe that he would want to. I ran a hand through my hair and paused when I saw Blaire and Himari standing at the staircase. Both of them had smirks on their face.

"So what happened?" Blaire asked wiggling her eyebrows.

"Nothing," I shrugged. "I'm going to shower," I said and walked up the stairs.

"I don't believe you. Hot chocolate meeting in the lounge in an hour!" Himari yelled and I could hear Blaire giggle.

Why did I get the feeling they were going to ask me about Beckett. If it wasn't for Callum I would be in a very sticky situation. I don't know what I would have done if that kiss happened. Would I went along with it and kissed Beckett back, I had to wonder.

I wasn't ready to start dating again. I didn't have the time to be someone's girlfriend. What was Beckett thinking? We were friends. Why did he want to ruin our friendship with a kiss?
