Doesn't Know (Daryl) [46]

The horror stories I will once be able to tell excite me and terrify me all at the same time. She was born in it and will have no idea what it was. She has a family, only her father and me being her true relatives, blood-related.
However, I have learned that blood related, means nothing. Family is a whole other meaning.
She doesn't know her father, she may never know him. He was trapped within the ways of the apocalypse, and he had to let himself get away from that. That meant everything and everyone involved.
Rick talks to Daryl the most, and it's rare for the twp of them to have a conversation more than once a month.
It's been about 5 years since the world began to fix itself, and almost 5 years since Daryl walked out of my life and left me with a child, however, he didn't know, he doesn't know, he will never know.
"Florence?" Maggie smiled
"Hey," I spoke
"Hailey is in the back playing with Hershel and Judith."
"It's crazy how old they are now. Judith is almost 8, Hershel is almost 6 Hailey just turned 5, where did the time go?" I asked
"Down the drain,"
"Flo" Rick smiled
"Rick!"
"Daryl said he wants to try and make it, he wants to try with us, he just .."
"He's coming tonight?"
"Yeah, I know."
I have waited for Hailey to meet her father, but it seemed too soon, and too late at the same time. I hadn't seen Daryl for 5 years, and he was going to be here, looking at Hailey, making the connection.
An hour or so passed, I checked on the three kids a few times, but Carl had been with them for most the time anyway, so I didn't need to worry.
Carl walked into the kitchen and grabbed a drink from the fridge.
"How are the kids?"
"I think they are fine, they went out front a few minutes ago to talk to everyone."
I smiled, I took a drink as well then headed to the front where everyone was. The sun was warm, was living a normal life with my family. We were laughing, not fighting, I had forgotten what this had felt like.
Then I saw it. Everyone was smiling, but quiet as Hailey at on Daryl's knee, neither realizing they were each other's missing piece.
I could leave and pretend I didn't know he was even here, I could yell out that's your kid, I could run to him and hug him, or Hailey could do it for me.
"Mommy!" She laughed as she jumped off Daryl's knee. She ran to me with arms held open, I smiled and hugged her back.
Daryl's reaction said millions of words, it said hello, and I've missed you, and why didn't you tell me that I had a daughter.
I looked at him with sad eyes, then headed back inside as Hailey ran off with Hershel and Judith.
"Is she?"
"Yes, Daryl." I cut him off, not looking at him
"Did you know when I told you I needed to leave?"
"No, I didn't and I didn't want to make you come back here when you didn't want to be here, so I didn't tell you."
"Does she know, who I am?"
"Of course not, how would she?"
"I am trying to get through this Flo, I really am."
"Daryl all of us were, you just left us. You left everything, family, friends ... me." I said facing him
"I know that now."
"Yeah, 5 years later."
"Let me try."
"Then be here."
"I am trying."
"Find a better answer."
"That's the best I got, I am sorry if that ain't good enough for you."
"If it's the best you got then, of course, it's good enough for me. We need to start slow and I don't think we should tell her right now."
"What about tonight?"
I thought for a few seconds and stared into those eyes, those eyes that got me into this mess 5 years ago.
"Tonight."
