8. In the darkness
"In the darkness, In the darkness, I will find you... in the darkness"
My eyes shot open. Ready to identify any danger near me and how to get away from it.
All I saw was blue...
At first I thought that there was another Angel staring me down.
The look had the same sole intent as Jaelys.
Mate.
But this look was glazed over with worry too...
"Lex? Are you okay?" A deep voice called.
I knew that voice.
I will never tell the owner of that voice that I called him an angel. Forget that thought. He's the devil in disguise.
"It's too late. I already heard that thought." His lips curled into a smirk and as I looked at them I could see that he'd been biting them.
Some of the skin was stripped off, but not by much, and his lips were plumper that usual.
"I heard that too." He chuckled.
I wanted to complain at him. Tell him to stop listening to my thoughts, but as I opened my mouth no sound came out.
I tried three times. Most likely looking like a gaping fish as I did so.
"Kenz!" He called, turning his head to look over his shoulder. "She's awake!"
Soon enough Kenz peaked her head around Nat's shoulder as they both looked down at me.
"Finally! What were you doing sleeping in the woods silly!" She chuckled.
I once again attempted to reply, but to no avail.
"If your not gonna talk out loud, don't open your mouth. You don't know what you could catch in there in this world." Nat laughed at me.
'I can't speak.'
My worry-filled words rung in our minds as a moment of silence passed.
"I'd give you guys some space... but you called me over here." Kenz laughed, breaking the silence.
We turned to face her, phone in hand.
"Also..." Snap. She played around with the phone in her hand for a while. "Thank you for shipping material!" She smiled.
The smile was so gleeful that you wouldn't have guessed the evil content behind it.
'Shipping material?' I questioned.
I looked back to Nathan... then I noticed.
He was hovering over me, legs at both sides of my waist, his hands, that were holding himself up, beside my head.
'Move.' I ordered.
He pushed himself up and off the ground to stand fully upright beside me.
'Well look at you. Using mind control so quickly after waking up.' He said in a mildly cheery tone.
'It's the best way to keep you away.'
'So you've been practising.' He chuckled. "Kenz. Phone." He demanded, not turning away from me.
She handed him the phone back and that when I realised...
She took the picture... on his phone.
I fully took in my surroundings to notice that we were in the mini-cave, the fire was lit in the centre a little ways away from us.
Nat shuffled through his phone and the smiled at me, showing me the picture that kenz took.
"I think this will be my new screensaver." Nat grinned.
As I attempted to stand up and grab the phone from him, my arm stung in a deep pain, throwing me of guard and landing me on the floor again.
His grin turned into a deep belly laugh.
"This is why you shouldn't go out into the woods alone." He continues to laugh as he helped me up into a sitting position.
I'd rather stand, but at least I was partially off the ground now.
"Why were you even out there lexi?
As soon as she brought up the topic, my stomach rumbled.
"Lex's stomach got the better of her." Nat commented.
"Ahh. I'm sorry that I can't pick out foods from other dimensions for you..." she apologised meekly.
"Why can't you?" Nat asked, raising an eyebrow and giving Kenz a question it look.
"If I did... I would have to completely go to that dimension and then come back... after that I would have to find you guys again because I could be put back anywhere in this dimension." She whined slightly, annoyed at not having mastered her power yet.
Nat put his thumb and forefinger to his chin, lowering his eyebrow and looking at the ground in thought.
'Don't waste your brain cells. You don't have much.' I told him.
'Says the girl who's failing maths. Give me a minute and I'll come up with something.' He responded.
So he's allowed in my mind, but I'm not allowed in his.
I tried to re-enter but it was as if I was completely shut out. That had never happend before...
'What the hell?'
Kenz walked over to me and whispered quietly.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
'I think so... it's just that my voice won't work...' I responded to her.
"Ahh"
"Why don't we just link then?" Nat suggested.
'What are you talking about?' I questioned.
"What do you mean?" Kenz asked.
"It's where all of our minds are linked. It's like a tracking device where we can also hear each others thoughts if they are directed to us." Nat explained.
'Well that's something new...' I thought.
"That's something your power hungry self can't have. This power is of limits, so close your eyes because I won't let you into my mind for this one either." Nat smirked, locking eyes with me.
I sighed. It would have been really cool to have a power like that... but I guess it wasn't meant to be if I wanted to eat.
I closed my eyes and felt something like a fur blanket cover me. I felt warm...
'You can open your eyes now Lex.' Nat informed me.
Nothing looked different. I was still looking at the exact same view of Nat and Kenz in the cave, but it felt different. I felt comforted... happier...
Weird.
