"You can't be serious." Yijin's eyes were shaped like saucers, vibrating with disbelief. She had just returned from a long day at school and was immediately ushered to her father's office.
Jin drags his glasses up the bridge of his nose without taking his eyes from the large screen in his hand. He too had returned from working overtime at his company.
"I'm afraid I am, sweetie."
"But dad—"
"Are you two fighting again?"
She pretends she doesn't hear him.
Bingo.
It's not like he hasn't noticed it before. Sighing, he sets the device on the table and drags his eyes to meet with Yijin's. The tip of his finger drums the surface of the desk.
"What happened this time?"
Instead of answering right away, Kim Yijin strides towards the swivel chair and drops her body like she's tossing a sack. "I'm telling you dad, I can't do it."
"Why not?"
"Just cause!"
The rise of volume causes Jin to calmly close his eyes and wiggle the lobe of his ear. "You know you'll have to give me a better answer than that— where do you think you're going?"
"You can't expect me to do you this favor just because you're friends with Aunt Y/n, dad. I'd rather jump off a lake than spend another minute with that boy."
"Kim Yij——"
"I'm spending the night at Uncle Jimin and Aunt Ella's place. Don't come find me."
Three Days Later
The Parks own a real estate located at Gwanju and it takes about two hours to reach Busan by car. Whenever Yijin feels like she needs to escape her usual surroundings, the Park home welcomes her with open arms.
"Still not planning to go back?" Aunt Ella and Uncle Jimin were blessed with three children. Their eldest, Park Hanjun, inevitably became friends with Yijin .
"My dad came to pick me up at school and I ditched him. What do you think?"
Hanjun lifts an eyebrow in amusement. He glides around the kitchen counter and settles on the stool next to hers, zooming in on the screen. "I'm surprised he hasn't showed up yet to be honest."
"That's cause he knows he's got nothing on Uncle Jimin."
Faint footsteps pours in on their conversation causing them both to turn their heads. A familiar face appears at the entrance of the kitchen and Yijin realizes it's Hanjun's six year old brother, Minjun.
With full lips identical to their father and rosy cheeks that resemble like muffins, he scratches the back of his head and takes a step forward into the kitchen.
"Hyung, have you seen my baseball bat?"
"Did you check your drawers?"
"I did. It's not there."
Hanjun shrugs his shoulders, muscles in motion beneath his shirt. "Sorry buddy. "
The young boy looks like he's about to cry at this point. "B-but—"
Unfazed by the sight, Hanjun sighs under his breath and slides off the stool. He gestures Minjun to follow him out the Kitchen. "I'll help you find it. I'm sure there's a spot you missed in your room."
There's a funny story behind the Park siblings.
Originally, both Aunt Ella and Uncle Jimin aimed for a baby girl. Unfortunately, they got Hanjun on the first try. Second time? A boy. And the same goes with the third.
Now the family's eight months pregnant with their fourth child and they decided to keep the gender a surprise. Uncle Jimin has his fingers crossed hoping the universe hasn't failed him and that it's a girl.
In the mean time, Yijin's filling in as their daughter.
As if on cue, her phone vibrates above the counter. She reads the familiar contact name and rolls her eyes to the moon. She answers it either way.
"Hello?"
"How long do you plan to stay there?" The stress in her father's voice can be heard through the line.
"You tell me dad. I'm not planning to entertain that Jeon anytime soon."
He sighs. Even though he isn't in front of her, she can already tell he's rubbing the space between his eyebrows. "Try putting yourself in his shoes, sweetheart. Unlike his father, he wants to know what it's like to be in a real school. All I'm asking you is that you'll be there to show him the ropes—"
"Can't you have someone else do it ?"
"You know how he is, Yijin. Unless it's someone he knows, he's as stiff as a rod."
"If he wants to experience what school is like so much, then should he show at least an ounce of effort? Are you sure this is what he wants or is Aunt Y/n making him do this?"
When silence greets her on the other side, Yijin nods her head slowly. "I got to go."
Hanjun returns and instantly picks up on the atmosphere. "Yikes. I leave for two minutes and you're already in a bad mood. What's up? Need help with your homework again or?"
Yijin shakes her head and shuts off her laptop after saving her work. "Does your family still have room for one more?"
"Why the heck would you ask that? Don't tell me—" Bitterness strucks Hanjun's face when the realization sinks in. "Hell no. You're better of as a Kim than a Park."
"Why not? I'd make a wonderful sister you know? I already am."
"You can't be serious."
Yijin eventually cracks a gentle smile. "Of course I'm not. I'm all dad has left. I'd be damned if I left him over this trivial matter."
"Sometimes I wonder what goes on inside that head of yours—"
The sound of the doorbell intercepts Hanjun's words.
"You're expecting someone?" Yijin asks, heading towards the door.
"Not that I know of."
She grabs the handle and opens it, regretting it right after.
"Who is i— oh." Hanjun shuts his mouth like a clam, glancing at Yijin who's vibrating with strained irritation. If looks could kill, he'd be six feet under.
"What are you doing here?"
It's not until now that Jeon Jungwoo breaks the intense glare he's been sending Hanjun, flickering his eyes to collide with the girl scowling at him.
"You tell me." He says in a low tone. "What are you doing here?"
